Mika Jaakkola, Niina Pesonen, Virve Merisalo, Eija Nygård Objective and short description Objective was to study 3D measurement and modelling methods in road construction process. Object was to find out how existing road structure can be modelled on account of laser scanning and ground penetrating technologies. Also accurate 3D positioning method of mobile measurement devices were tested and developed for road modelling purposes. Modelling concentrates to road super structure and pavement layers. Utilization of developed models in mass calculations, automated machine control systems and quality control of road construction were examined. Results Started to find out measurement and modelling methods to produce 3D model of old road surface and structure layers. General description of the new 3D road rehabilitation process is under development. Several experiments with 3D helicopter laser scanning, vehicle laser scanning as well as 3D GPR measurements have been made. The utilisation of these 3D measured models in road design phase was studied. 3D Machine control modelling methods were studied. Three-dimensional new design method based on the use of solid modelling has been studied. Some examples has been produced using a solid modelling software. 3 Visits The researchers have visited several Road design software developers: Tekla, Vianova Finland and Vianova Norway. Several meetings have also had with Finnish Road Administration (orderer), Finnish Road Enterprise (main contractor, design office) and the measurement developers: AL-Engineering Oy, Roadscanners Oy. In September 2006 Rauno Heikkilä participated in KITARA seminar and gave a presentation about TIMARA-project with Pekka Kilpeläinen. The seminar was organized by Academy of Finland and it was held in Turku. In September 2007 Rauno Heikkilä participated in KITARA seminar. A presentation about TIMARA-project was given by Pekka Kilpeläinen. The seminar was organized by Academy of Finland and it was held in Helsinki. In September 2007 Rauno Heikkilä and Pekka Kilpeläinen partisipated the International Symposium on Automation and Robotics in Construction (ISARC 2007). The symposium was held in Kochi, India. Pekka Kilpeläinen gave a presentation about TIMARA research.

(Tech) Pekka Kilpeläinen, Dr. Kalervo Nevala Objective and short description The goal of the project is to survey the applicability of machine automation and wireless communication technologies in road repairing and surfacing. The focus is on the control of the work site and road repairing and road surfacing process. This process contains design, construction, quality control and work site management. The objective is to study, how different machines, e.g. asphalt mixing plant, trucks, road paver and vibrating roller, can be equipped with wireless data connections and automation systems and what are the possibilities and benefits of ICT and machine automation in this application field. Results During TIMARA-project visits to the asphalt pavement repairing sites have been arranged. Different asphalt repairing methods as well as practices in production and transportation of asphalt mass have been studied. Persons that are working in asphalt work have been interviewed. Asphalt transportation and it s synchronisation to the asphalt spreading and asphalt production is one detected area of development. A concept of an asphalt process management system has been developed. The concept consists of connecting the trucks, asphalt pavers and the asphalt plant to a database by using wireless data communication. Process variables, such as mass temperature, are measured in real time and saved to the database. From the information collected to a database an up-to-date view that shows the functioning of the whole process can been generated. This idea was tested on a real worksite. VTT developed embedded wireless measurement modules that collect data and store it to the database automatically. Modules were tested on an asphalt truck and a paver. The position, status and measured mass temperature were presented on a web based user interface in real time. With sensors attached to the truck different events. e.g. truck starting unloading, could be detected automatically in order to make data collection as automatic as possible and to minimize the effort needed from the users. In April 2007 Pekka Kilpeläinen participated Lean Construction and Automation in the Infrastructure Sector Workshop help in UC Berkley (USA). Pekka Kilpeläinen gave presentation about TIMARA-project and wireless technology and automation systems in infrastructure sector with Rauno Heikkilä and Tommi Parkkila from VTT. In September 2007 Pekka Kilpeläinen participated in KITARA seminar and gave a presentation about TIMARA-project. The seminar was organized by Academy of Finland and it was held in Helsinki. In September 2007 Pekka Kilpeläinen and Rauno Heikkilä partisipated the International Symposium on Automation and Robotics in Construction (ISARC 2007). The symposium was held in Kochi, India. Pekka Kilpeläinen gave a presentation about TIMARA research. In October 2007 field test was arranged in Tampere. During a three day test period the developed wireless measuring modules were tested in a real worksite in co-operation with Destia.
