3 ConservationFostering Partnerships Around the World 76 Partners 6 Continents 16 Countries The Conservation Department at Loggerhead Marinelife Center works diligently to understand impacts of marine debris and other human-caused threats that sea turtles face in order to create comprehensive conservation solutions. This is achieved through data collection, studying best conservation practices and fostering global partnerships. Because of this, our global conservation impact has significantly grown in the past few years, reflecting the Center s mission to protect our world ocean. We now have more than 70 conservation partners and collaborations across six continents. These partners are crucial as marine debris, particularly single-use plastics, is becoming one of the most dangerous threats to our ocean s health. At LMC, our hospital staff has seen increased amounts of marine debris in patients the past few years. In 2017, nearly 100 percent of all post-hatchlings that our hospital staff necropsied had plastic inside them, while 69 percent of items collected during LMC cleanups were plastic. This is why conservation efforts are critical to our mission. The Center s global perspective is designed to expand our conservation impact in the USA and the globe. Sea turtles are international migrators that navigate one world ocean. Our partnerships engage innovative organizations to increase global conservation awareness. A full list of our conservation partners is available at: marinelife.org/lmcpartners

Pollution Prevention We focus pollution prevention efforts on source reduction preventing pollution before it happens. Based on local coastal and underwater cleanup findings and reports from our hospital and research staff, we have developed several initiatives to prevent marine pollution, including projects centered around balloon and cigarette litter, single-use plastics and monofilament fishing line. Cigarette Litter Prevention In 2017 we received a Keep America Beautiful grant to install cigarette receptacles on Responsible Pier Initiative piers. Since installation, cigarette litter has decreased nearly 39 percent in project locations. To date, 111 ash receptacles are installed on 28 fishing piers. Blue Friends Beach Cleanups As the Center grows, so does community support for our monthly Blue Friends Society beach cleanups. Last year we had 68 cleanups with 2,911 volunteers. We also: Removed 90,115 individual items Collected 2,863 pounds of marine debris Recycled 111 miles of monofilament line Top 10 Items Collected in 2017 Following each cleanup event, our sorting team weighs all of the debris that s collected. Then, the trash is sorted into specific categories, counted and recorded in our database: 27,447 Plastic Pieces 12,622 Foam Pieces 11,595 Plastic Bottle Caps 8,118 Plastic Bags 7,945 Cigarette Butts 6,534 Food Wrappers 3,203 Straws 2,295 Plastic Utensils 1,647 Pounds of Rope 1,195 Plastic Bottles Balloon Ban Initiative Balloons are often released, purposefully or accidentally, and end up littering beaches and the ocean. The deflated balloons resemble jellyfish, a common prey item for sea turtles. Plastic ingestion is an issue we see commonly at the Center. Therefore, we hope the Balloon Ban Initiative will help reduce the impact of marine debris. In 2017, the Center s ban expanded to include a total of 16 municipalities throughout five counties across the state of Florida. 4 Provide a first-of-its-kind symposium space to support our growing global partnership network. This will allow our Center to host collaborators from around the globe, increasing the awareness of Florida s unique sea turtle nesting beaches and LMC s global ocean conservation efforts (See pages 17-20)

Conservation at the Juno Beach Pier The Juno Beach Pier is a longstanding icon of northern Palm Beach County. Since attaining pier management in 2014, Loggerhead Marinelife Center has significantly enhanced the look of the pier house, expanded the concessions menu, offered a wider variety of angling and retail items and implemented unique visitor experiences, including morning beach yoga and responsible fishing programs. These initiatives help us bring awareness to even more community members and appeal to guests visiting from other areas of Florida and around the globe. Conservation Impact In 2017, we amplified efforts at the Juno Beach Pier to not only protect local sea turtle populations and other wildlife, but also to provide an enjoyable, responsible atmosphere for anglers and pier-goers. The icons below show our conservation efforts at the Juno Beach Pier. Responsible Pier Initiative The Responsible Pier Initiative works directly with anglers and fishing piers. It also provides first responders on fishing piers with the necessary resources to respond effectively to sea turtle injuries and strandings on or around the piers. 64 partner piers 410 sea turtle interactions 378 sea turtle rescues (all RPI piers) 58 shore bird rescues 13,161 pounds of debris collected to date Photo by Michael Brown, 2017 Juno Beach Pier Photo Contest winner 6 Juno Beach Pier 36,433 Anglers (2017) 2,638 pounds of marine debris removed in underwater cleanups (2007-Present) 71,312 Visitors (2017) 49 Sea turtles rescued (2013-Present) 112 miles line recycled 14,238 glass/tin items recycled 5,839 cigarettes collected (2017) 58 Shore birds rescued (2016-Present) Partners in Conservation

Mentoring Future Ocean Ambassadors 7 Education Loggerhead Marinelife Center believes education is necessary to inspire the next generation of ocean heroes, especially at a young age when children are the most inquisitive. This comes from our founder Eleanor Fletcher s pioneering vision of offering free ocean conservation education to the public, regardless of their age or socioeconomic status. more than 50,000 students of all ages, emphasizing ocean conservation and marine ecosystems. We also partnered with the Palm Beach County STEM Education Council, the University of Florida s Florida Master Naturalist Program and Florida Atlantic University s Pine Jog Green School Recognition Program. Through these community relationships, we share marine science teacher resources, host STEM externs and co-instruct courses. Every year, concern for our ocean grows. Therefore, we must continue to provide accessible and research-based marine education. Longstanding programs like the Passport Ambassador program and Junior Marine Biologist Summer Camp scholarships continue to provide financial support to Title I students and families in need, educating young minds despite financial barriers. This year, our new programs including the Debris-Free Seas classroom kit, Junior Research Lab and Turtle Talk have provided free or reduced-fee marine science Education is in our DNA, so as our Center continues to grow, so will our ability to offer even more engaging programs. In 2017, we offered 39 unique public and educational STEM-based programs thousands of times to

education to hundreds of schoolchildren, keeping our commitment to providing accessible conservation education over the last decade - just as our founder Eleanor Fletcher had envisioned. Provide new dedicated classroom space, a large outdoor educational amphitheater and more than double the amount of multi-use flex classroom space. This will increase our ability to provide greater educational impact to students of all ages from around the world (See pages 17-20) 8

9 Research One of the World s Most Important Beaches The Research Laboratory at Loggerhead Marinelife Center runs one of Florida s oldest sea turtle monitoring programs. The program occurs on one of the world s most densely nested stretches of beach - primarily for local nesting leatherback, loggerhead and green sea turtles - along 9.5 miles from Jupiter Island to North Palm Beach. The team collects more data in one nesting season than some labs do in two to three decades. As such, our lab has one of the most comprehensive data sets in the world, allowing us to help form the basis for conservation decisions that help promote the recovery of local and global sea turtle populations Nesting Season Facts Staff recorded 19,085 sea turtle nests and a record-breaking 51,297 crawls Our stretch of beach accounts for one percent of Florida s surveyed coast, but it comprises 16 percent of the state s nesting activities Innovative Research Last year, the Center hired Associate Director of Research Dr. Justin Perrault to help LMC achieve its vision of being recognized locally and internationally as the leading authority in sea turtle research. Dr. Perrault s extensive work and knowledge in the field of sea turtle science will help expand our research impact among the global scientific community, particularly through the development of novel research projects that will result in scientific presentations and peer-reviewed publications. Double the size of our current laboratory, allowing us more lab work space for innovative projects and data analysis. The new George and Lynn Bovenizer Research Labratory will also allow us to open our campus to visiting scientists and researchers from around the globe (See pages 17-20)

2017 Scientific Publications For the first time in our history, three leading edge scientific papers were written and published by members of the Research Laboratory at Loggerhead Marinelife Center: Potential effects of brevetoxins and toxic elements on various health variables in Kemp s ridley and green sea turtles after a red tide bloom event This study reveals the impact of toxins in sea turtles and the surrounding environment. Toxic elements and associations with hematology, plasma biochemistry, and protein electrophoresis in nesting loggerhead sea turtles from Casey Key, Florida This study helps us understand various toxins effects on sea turtles. 10 Evaluation of serum for pathophysiological effects of prolonged low salinity water exposure in displaced bottlenose dolphins This study reveals what can happen to bottlenose dolphins that migrate outside their normal habitat. 25 Financial Summary Fiscal Year: January December 2017 Our annual operating budget continues to grow, keeping our focus on LMC s needs. This year, thanks to generous guests, donors and other community supporters, 77 percent of total expenses were used for programming costs - educating thousands of guests and students of all ages, rescuing more sea turtles and working with conservation partners to protect our blue planet. In one decade, we nearly tripled full-time staff from 11 (2007) to 30 (2017.) Ten years ago, our total annual revenue was measured at $926,734. This past year, income was measured at $5,271,674, revealing our financial growth to be 468 percent since Our finance department is responsible for maintaining financial balance and activity over all departments, ensuring our records are Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP) and Generally Accepted Auditing Standards (GAAS) compliant in partnership with auditors and nonprofit industry best practices. Financial statements are issued monthly and presented to the finance committee and board of directors. The finance team also conducts a yearly independent audit through Holyfield and Thomas and holds endowment funds in the Community Foundation of Palm Beach and Martin Counties. We are committed to compliant and transparent financial reporting for staff, board members and donors. In 2017, we received our fourth consecutive four star rating from Charity Navigator, a leading independent ratings firm. Only 11 percent of charities in the USA have received four consecutive four star rankings, indicating that LMC outperforms most other charities in the United States. $5,271,674 39% Retail $2,074,931 23% Donations $1,196,725 17% Special Events $897,504 8% Education $421,338 6% Grants/Contracts $305,632 7% Other Income $375,544 $5,023,166 77% Programs $3,885,022 17% Development $834,980 6% Administration $303,164 *Above figures based on unaudited financial statements. 24
