CONNECT At Cambridge Community Foundation we passionately believe in the power of philanthropy to change lives and build community.
CONNECT CHALLENGES + SOLUTIONS WHO WE ARE Cambridge Community Foundation the only foundation focused on all of Cambridge works collaboratively with organizations and people committed to making a difference in the vitality of our community. This rich engagement informs us of our community s greatest needs as well as its greatest resources. We use that knowledge to provide support to more than 180 nonprofits, to convene innovative and effective collaborations, to connect donors to the community issues they care about, and to guide more than $1 million in grant giving each year. WHAT WE DO Identify Needs and Opportunities CCF actively listens and engages with directors of Cambridge-serving nonprofits, city officials, university and business leaders, individuals, and funders to build a clearer understanding of our community s needs. Generate Solutions CCF convenes and works with the various sectors of our community to initiate collaborative solutions to community problems, and to build the resources to achieve lasting change. Guide Generosity CCF helps donors and their advisors make a powerful difference alone and with others by establishing or contributing to charitable funds that address community needs now and for generations to come. Build a Strong Network CCF provides grants, training, technical assistance, and resources to more than 180 local agencies, and connects donors, agencies, and community leaders around community-building initiatives. Creativity is something that is inside of you that everyone has but not everyone uses. 6TH GRADE STUDENT AT THE CAMBRIDGE CREATIVITY COMMONS Photo by Cambridge Camping
CONNECTING WITH CAMBRIDGE For 97 years, Cambridge Community Foundation has connected with the needs of our community. Now we re listening more, sharing more, and getting to know our citizens even better through social media. The media may be new, but our message is the same: philanthropy has the power to change lives and build community. 4 CONNECT NEEDS + ANSWERS CCF grants fortify Cambridge in six vital areas. EARLY CHILDHOOD SERVICES A Healthy Start Supporting babies, preschoolers, and their families YOUTH SERVICES Opportunities for Children and Youth Helping children grow into healthy, productive citizens SENIOR SERVICES Support for Our Seniors Offering services, activities, and volunteer opportunities COMMUNITY SERVICES A Welcoming Community Ensuring access to services and resources for immigrants and underserved groups and individuals EMERGENCY OUTREACH A Community that Cares Addressing hunger, homelessness, and violence ARTS AND THE ENVIRONMENT A Lively, Livable Community Encouraging creativity, caring for our environment, and arts for all Cambridge Camping Pine Street Inn Community Learning Center VNA Randy Newman The Guidance Center Every child in Cambridge should have access to high-quality early education regardless of their family s income. ALICE K. WOLF
CONNECT CITIZENS + CITIZENS Romana Vysatova Cambridge Community Foundation identifies strategic funding initiatives that tackle major community issues with larger grants for longer periods of time. Baby U A child s early years are critical. Baby U and its Alumni Association increase parents knowledge of child-rearing, strengthen parent-child relationships, and connect parents to community resources. Cambridge Creativity Commons Cambridge Creativity Commons engages Cambridge students and teachers in imaginative exploration and interdisciplinary arts projects with inspiring local artists. Immigrant Initiative CCF grants increase the availability of high-quality English classes that help newcomers participate more fully in the educational, economic, and civic life of Cambridge. Agenda for Children Foundation grants increase the quality, accessibility, and participation rates in high-quality out-of-school programs.
CONNECT ISSUES + DONORS Cambridge Community Foundation can help you make a gift that has the greatest impact on the causes you care about and on the lives of residents in Cambridge. There are three main ways that people give through CCF: 1 Create or give to a named fund that will make a significant impact in our community now and also help build an endowment for the future; 2 Give to one of the Foundation s strategic initiatives that tackle major community issues; 3 Give to CCF s annual appeal that provides critical immediate grant support to more than 100 Cambridge agencies providing a range of services. We accept many types of gifts, including cash, securities, insurance benefits, real estate, and other assets. We can put your gift to use immediately or create a fund for current and future generations. We will work with you to find the giving option that s right for you. Because we re a 501 (c)(3) public charity, you ll receive the maximum tax advantage. MAKE A DIFFERENCE NOW Online: Give a gift securely online at Checks: Send checks payable to Cambridge Community Foundation to: Cambridge Community Foundation 99 Bishop Allen Drive Cambridge, MA Securities: Donating appreciated stocks directly to CCF can avoid capital gains tax incurred for sold appreciated securities. Ask your broker to call us for instructions. MAKE A DIFFERENCE THROUGH YOUR ESTATE We ll gladly work with you, and your financial advisor if you wish, to help you make a gift through a bequest, a charitable gift annuity, or other type of planned gift. Community Charter School of Cambridge
CONNECT PASSION + COMMUNITY: STRENGTHENING EARLY EDUCATION Photo by Romana Vysatova When Alice Wolf left elective office, she had four decades of public service to her credit. She also had $80,447 in her campaign account. And she had to give it all away. For Wolf, what to do with the money was easy. She created the Alice Wolf Early Education and Care Fund at Cambridge Community Foundation. Grants from the Fund will help low-income children attend early education programs and improve early childhood services. Increasing access to high-quality early education has been a passion of mine, says Wolf. Wolf served Cambridge on the School Committee and then as city councilor, vice mayor, mayor, and state representative. She is also a mother. When my kids were little, she says I had the experience of seeing how really good early education affected children. Now we know from brain research that children require stimulation and learning opportunities from a very early age to allow their brain to develop appropriately. Donors such as Alice Wolf have been merging their passion with support for their community. Learn about creating a fund at CCF in the How to Give section of our website.
Phyllis Bretholtz CONNECT ART + SCIENCE: IMAGINATION MEETS EXPLORATION Cambridge is a hotbed of innovation, where today s scientific advances are transformed into tomorrow s technologies. So it s not surprising that our community is home to Cambridge Creativity Commons (CCC), an imaginative new program to nurture innovation and creativity in children. CCC workspaces are alive with a wide range of media and activities. For example, fourth graders explore the scale and characteristics of planets through movement, sculpture, and technology. Students such as Jayla, Nushrat, and Rosie pictured above learn about Jupiter and then sculpt and paint a model of the planet. On the CCC s eco-art kayaking adventure, Cambridge middleschoolers investigate the marine environment and document what they learn with photography, field sketching, and environmental sculpture. The multi-disciplinary approach is key. The CCC encourages cross-disciplinary collaboration among teachers, artists, scientists, and students, says Lesley University Professor Martha McKenna. CCC nurtures the 21st century skills of creativity, critical thinking, and collaboration. Initiated with major grants from Cambridge Community Foundation, the CCC is a collaboration of the Foundation, Lesley University, Cambridge Public Schools, Cambridge Arts Council, and David and Dorothy Arnold. To connect with the CCC and other Foundation funding initiatives, visit the Initiatives and Programs section of our website.
CREATE A NAMED FUND AT CCF Corporate Advised Funds are similar to donor advised funds but are the gift of a corporation, a business, or its employees. Corporations can establish such funds by donating at least $3,000 annually. Designated Funds and Agency Funds allow you to name the organization(s) that will permanently receive grants from the fund, subject to certain restrictions. You can establish a designated fund, or an agency can create an agency fund, with donations totaling $50,000 or more. Scholarship Funds support student education. You can create a scholarship fund with a donation of $25,000 or more. When you establish a charitable fund with Cambridge Community Foundation, you make a difference in your community both now and in the future. Your fund can be named for you, for a cause or a loved one, or it can be anonymous. TYPES OF FUNDS Unrestricted Funds allow us to use our expertise to make grants that respond to Cambridge s changing needs. You can establish an unrestricted fund with a donation of $5,000 or more. Field of Interest Funds support a particular interest. Our Distribution Committee will choose deserving grantees in that area. You can establish a field of interest fund with a donation of $5,000 or more. You may select your own interest or donate to one of the Foundation s six grant areas. Donor Advised Funds let you recommend which organizations should receive grants, and we ensure that these organizations meet charitable requirements. A donor advised fund can be established by a donation of $25,000 or more, and receives more favorable tax treatment than a family foundation. David Fichter (muralist) Private Foundation Transfers preserve the identity and purpose of the original foundation, while CCF takes care of all administration in a more cost-effective way. Family members or designees may continue to participate as fund advisors, as in a donor advised fund. I chose CCF as the place to establish a donor advised fund. They are sophisticated enough to accept a large gift, they provide support to the community in many ways above and beyond their grants, and they have a generosity of spirit that stands out in the field of philanthropy.
