1 SUPPORT FOR INCLUSIVE EDUCATION AT DR. IVAN MERZ PRIMARY SCHOOL LIVING ROOM Introduction of a project by Dr. Ivan Merz Primary School, Zagreb, Croatia

IVAN MERZ PRIMARY SCHOOL, ZAGREB Municipal school center of Zagreb Frequent migrations of a small number of students with different needs Students without previous knowledge of the Croatian language Lack of information about the Croatian school system Students with different cultures and nationalities

4 DR. IVAN MERZ PRIMARY SCHOOL, ZAGREB The school has 426 students in total, distributed in 20 classes, 22 students in educational C program, In 1 st, 2 nd, 3 rd and 4 rd grade we have 7 extended stay groups Starting from 1 st grade, students learn foreign languages: German and Italian as extracurricular activities, and English as a compulsory subject

5 BACKGROUND OF THE PROJECT Education by the C program Teaching assistants Different religious communities as an optional subject Talented students Zero tolerance for violence Partially realized due to lack of funds The space intended for the project exists There is a lack of teaching materials Cooperation with other institutions and organizations outside the school

6 PROJECT SPECIFIC OBJECTIVES: Improving existing activities aimed at students with special educational needs Improving knowledge and skills of teachers Reducing the risk of social isolation Encouraging acceptance of diversity and cooperative behavior

8 UNITY THROUGH MUSIC Students would learn about diversity and acceptance of other cultures and traditions Collaborative music playing Cooperation with minorities and their associations Visiting concerts

9 LEARNING HOW TO LEARN Helping students with learning disabilities Workshops for parents (how to help their own child) Workshops for teachers (how to identify a child with disabilities and the role of the teacher) Workshops for students (Respecting diversity, Acceptance talk, Learning how to learn)

10 STOP PEER VIOLENCE o Educating students how to relate to fellows and how to react in adverse situations o Workshops for students - a child psychologist (How to resolve a conflict, Positive interdependence) o Workshops for parents - The role of parents in protecting children from violence o Some of the activities: creating a website, brochures, digital photography exhibition, animated films

11 MAGIC OF KNOWLEDGE Working with gifted students Workshop Croatian sign language Video making topic: Dangers of the Internet Including students in senior class courses

12 PLAN OF THE PROJECT LIVING ROOM LIFE OF THE PROJECT AND CONTINUATION Familiarising the community with the implementation of the project Involving the media in the work and promotion of good practice in local government Involving in work and cooperation with other institutions; associations, museums, theatres,... Cooperation with other schools in the city, state and between schools of other countries

13 PLANNED RESULTS Students will learn about the individual differences They will acquire skills of nonviolent conflict resolution Learning empathic acceptance of differences in others and themselves Through collaboration with parents we expect a transfer of acquired skills outside the framework of the school, too - the application of these skills in the family and the wider community
