11 2015 livestock honoree Keith Cavett, of Nome, ND, this year s Livestock Honoree, is certainly not a new comer to the North Dakota Winter Show or the North Star Classic. He began attending the Winter Show as a youngster with his family and later participated in livestock and grain judging at the event for several years. Some of the early cattle that Keith purchased for his herd came from the Angus sales held at the Winter Show in March. Later he began exhibiting cattle as a junior at the event and also sold cattle through the sales. In the 1970 s, Keith was appointed as a breed rep from the North Dakota Angus Association to the Livestock Committee for the Winter Show. He has served on that board continuously since that time. One of the major changes during that period was the beginning of the North Star Classic in December. When Keith and Trudy married they purchased land on the edge of the Sheyenne River valley and expanded their Prairie Pride Angus herd and farming operation. The livestock industry was always at the forefront of their interests, and they began selling cattle at various state sales and their own production sales. During this period of development they have always displayed, shown and/or sold cattle, first at the Winter Show and then the North Star Classic. As many people living in rural North Dakota, Keith has served on school and township boards, cattle breed organizations and farm organizations. Although the time commitment is a challenge for everyone, he thinks the benefits of gaining a broader understanding of people s various ideas and also the friendships that develop are worth the effort. Keith and Trudy were fortunate to have four children, Lisa, Brandon, Janna and Callie. Like most all farm kids they enjoyed their rural lifestyle and participated in working and showing cattle, helping prepare for sales and farm chores. And, yes, they enjoyed Winter Show and North Star activities. Brandon and his wife Val and family raise registered black and red Angus and join Keith and Trudy in their annual bull sale, as well as other farm and cattle activities. The girls are on to other occupations, but enjoy bringing their children and spending time at Prairie Pride Angus, when possible. In reflecting on his years serving on the ND Winter Show Livestock Committee and participating in the various aspects of the show, Keith certainly feels it has been a beneficial experience for himself and many others. I ve had the opportunity to know, learn from, and compete against some of the top cattlemen that have made this show a worthwhile activity over many years. First the generation before me and now the excellent younger stockmen that are bringing their own cattle through the doors of that building. The comradeship and mutual respect of our fellow breeders involved in the beef industry is reason enough to enjoy getting together at this exhibition. When I think of some of the really top cattle that I ve seen displayed here many times, I realize that this has been and should continue to be an elite cattle show that the whole area takes pride in. Thanks to all of those involved over the years to this present time. Join us as we recognize Keith Cavett, in the main arena on Friday, December 4th, at 4 pm. 9

15 Dear Cattlemen, Once again Angus enthusiasts will gather in Valley City for the highly anticipated North Star Classic to review the newest generation of pioneering Angus genetics presented by some of the foremost breeders in the Legendary state. The Angus offering is an elite presentation from North Dakota s pioneering Angus breeders, with some fresh new genetics to tempt the most discriminating cattlemen. Purebred Angus females are in great demand to repopulate America s grassland, where the supply of genetically superior feeders cannot fulfill the demand. Much like hybrid crops that now prosper in inclement environments, the modern day Angus female is inherently programmed for low-input programs that demand fertility, longevity, calving ease, docility, and feed efficiency. What s more, growth and carcass traits continue to improve across the breed to the point that continental breeders are looking to Angus genetics to enhance the performance of their composites. Feel free to contact our office, or any of the contributors with your inquiries, otherwise it will be our great pleasure to greet you on December 5th. Sincerely, Al and Jeanne Conover Dave Sweeney VALLEY CITY 1066 West Main Street
