Contemporary Modes of Production International Symposium, curated by Emanuel de Sousa and Francisca Aroso from the Architectural Association School of Architecture in partnership with University of Minho and Guimarães 2012 European Capital of Culture, proposes a critical approach on the ways in which creative and architectural practices can have a critical impact on other areas of contemporary production where the exponential customization represents a social and request a possibility linking computational design techniques in industrial and manufacturing processes. Open to general public, students and professionals on the architectural, art and design fields, among others. 2 GUEST SPEAKERS BIOS MARCOS CRUZ Marcos Cruz is the Director of the Bartlett School of Architecture, UCL, where he is also a Reader and Studio Master of Diploma/MArch Unit 20. His investigations about Neoplasmatic Architecture, which focused on a contemporary discussion about the body and the impact of bio technology on architecture, won the RIBA President s Research Award for Outstanding PhD Thesis in Back in 2000 he was part of the design team for the Kunsthaus Graz competition with Peter Cook and Colin Fournier (first prize). In 2003 he was also a co commissioner to the Austrian Ministry of Education for the re structuring of Viennese schools of architecture. Cruz founded with Marjan Colletti the atelier marcosandmarjan in 2000, combining the practice and teaching of architecture, along with experimental design research. Cruz is author and editor of a series of publications, including Unit 20 (University of Valencia/ACTAR, 2002), Unpredictable Flesh (Mimesis, 2004), marcosandmarjan Interfaces/Intrafaces (SpringerWienNewYork, 2005), AD Neoplasmatic Design (John Wiley & Sons, 2008), and PhD Research Projects 2009 (Bartlett UCL, 2009). PAULO CRUZ Paulo Cruz is Professor of Construction and Technology, School of Architecture, University of Minho, school which he directed between October 2004 and summer Between 1989 and 2008 he was a lecturer, Department of Civil Eng, University of Minho, having directed the department in the biennium Develops, since 1987, research in the area of scientific Special Structures (integration of architectural and structural design, bridges, wooden structures, steel structures, composite steel concrete and wood glass). He was chair of the Conference "ICSA2010 1st Int Conf. on Structures and Architecture, "Guimaraes (2010). In 2008, he was awarded the "Special Service Award" awarded by "IABMAS Int Assoc. for Bridge Maintenance and Safety, "in recognition of the services rendered for the organization" IABMAS'06 The Third Int Conf. on Bridge Maintenance, Safety and Management ". In 2005 he received the award "Thomas Fitch Rowland" by the "American Society of Civil Engineers" and in 2002 was nominated for the best paper published in the foreign language award Ferry Borges. He is the author of about three hundred publications and participated in about one hundred and fifty conferences and technical and scientific meetings. 3 JOSÉ PINTO DUARTE José Pinto Duarte is currently Professor at FA / UTL, Researcher at the Instituto Superior Técnico (IST) and Visiting Scientist at MIT. At MIT, he worked on the project Changing Places (formerly House_ n) as project coordinator of Personalization Residence Series (Mass Customization of Housing) and is currently a member of Living Labs project. His main research interests are in the field of customization of production, particularly of housing and urban development, and the development of design methods based on new technologies. Currently his research focuses on the use of project based methods in computational elaboration of urban flexible plans, able to respond to changes in context, and project coordinator City Induction funded by FCT.He is also the author of Dwelling in the Custom Series (foreword by Siza Vieira, FCG, 2007) and Type and Module (LNEC, 1995) and co editor of Customizing the Residence Series: experience design (with JN Beirão, CEFA, 2003) and Collaborative Design and Learning (with J. Benedict, M. Hector and WJ Mitchell, Praeger 2004). In 2008 he received the award UTL / Santander. FÁTIMA FERNANDES Fátima Fernandes was born in Bemposta, Mogadouro, Portugal, in 1961 and graduated from Escola Superior de Belas Artes do Porto in CANNATÀ & FERNANDES arquitectos Lda was founded in 2000 by Fátima Fernandes and Michele Cannatá. They have been working together since 1984, developing professional activity both in Portugal and Italy. They are the Scientific Coordinators of Architectural events at CONCRETA EXPONOR since In 2003 they became the Scientific Coordinators in charge of ASA editions Architecture Department and, in 2004 the scientific coordinators of the Architecture Department of CIVILIZAÇÃO editions. Their works and projects have been presented in various individual and collective exhibitions, among which the Venice Biennial in 1996, and the Milan Triennial in Their office develops architecture projects, town planning, design, graphic design and engineering services on subcontract conditions directly related to the architecture main activity. They also develop an important editorial activity through book edition, commissioning exhibitions and international seminars of architecture. They have been invited by universities and cultural institutions to talk about their projects and to participate, while teachers, in several international seminar projects. GONÇALO FURTADO Gonçalo M Furtado C Lopes is graduated in Architecture (Oporto Univ.,Portugal), Master (Univ. Politecnica da Catalunha,Spain), and PhD in History and Theory of Architecture (Univ. College of London,England). His dissertation focuses on the exchanges between architecture and systems research, the encounters of the British professionals Gordon Pask, Cedric Price and John Frazer, and provides a complete account of two outstanding architectural projects related to systems and computation Generator and Japan Net. 4 FERRIE VAN HATTUM Ferrie van Hattum was born on 4 October 1971 in Amersfoort, Netherlands. He has a Masters in Mechanical Engineering (Polymer Project), University of Twente, the Netherlands, and a PhD in Science and Polymer Engineering, University of Minho (UM). He worked at the Centre for Lightweight Construction TUD TNO, Delft, Netherlands and lectured in the Department of Polymer UM. He is Assistant Researcher at the Institute for Polymers and Composites UM and group leader in composites PIEP Pole of Innovation in Polymer Engineering, a nonprofit center for technology transfer for industrial research. GEORGE JERONIMIDIS George Jeronimidis has been teaching in the Emergent Technologies and Design programme since its beginning. He is the Director of the Centre for Biomimetics in the School of Construction Management and Engineering. The Centre has an international reputation in the field of biomimetics, having pioneered this discipline in the UK and abroad since the 90 s. His PhD in Physical Chemistry (University of Rome in 1970) and his current research interests cover biomimetics, plant and animal biomechanics, smart materials and structures and mechanics of composites. Recent and current projects include: bio inspired smart variable stiffness devices for vibration control (EPSRC ROPA and EPSRC Smart Materials and Structures Programme), development of smart textiles (MOD/DCTA), impact resistant composites based on wood structure (DEFRA), variable stiffness composites (DEFRA), smart multifunctional skins based on insect cuticle (ONR/USA), BIONIS Network for Industrial Sustainability (EPSRC/STI), biomimetics of insect air flow sensors for MEMS applications (EU Future and Emerging Technologies Programme/Life Perception Systems) and, very recently, a feasibility study with the European Space Agency on biomimetics and electro active polymer gels. In 1986 he received the Leslie Holliday Prize of the Materials Science Committee of the Institute of Materials for his work in composites and in 1996 the Donald Julius Groen Prize of the Institution of Mechanical Engineers. He has published extensively in these fields with articles in scientific journals, book and conference contributions. He is a member of the Scientific Advisory Board of the Max Planck Institute for Colloid and Interface Research in Golm, Germany and on the Editorial Board of the International Journal of Virtual and Physical Prototyping. JOSÉ PEDRO SOUSA Graduated in architecture from FAUP (Porto), he holds a master degree in genetic architecture from ESARQ UIC (Barcelona) and a PhD in architecture at IST UTL (Lisbon). With an interest in exploring new conceptual and material possibilities emerging from the use of advanced digital design and manufacturing technologies, he has developed an intense activity combining architectural research, teaching and design practice. Investigating the use of CAD/CAM technologies to rethink the applications of cork in architecture, his PhD research involved studying periods at MIT (Cambridge, MA) and at UPenn (Philadelphia, PA). In 2009, his work was distinguished with the Young Research Award in Architecture of the Technical University of Lisbon / CGD (Lisbon). After taught in Barcelona at ESARQ UIC and IAAC, he is currently invited professor at FAUP and at DArq / U. Coimbra.

5 Writing regularly, he created in 2005 monthly section on digital technology in the Portuguese magazine Arquitectura e Vida, which he edited for three years. Professionally, he has practiced architecture in Porto since Between 2004 and 2009, he co founded and directed the studio ReD, Research+Design with Marta Malé Alemany. With projects built in Austria, Czech Republic, Italia, Slovakia, Spain and Portugal, ReD s works have been presented in many lectures, exhibitions and publications, and received important distinctions like the FEIDAD 2005 award (Taiwan), OutrosMercadus award 2006 or the NEOTEC grant in 2007 (Portugal). Since 2009 he has developed an independent practice and, currently, he is cofounder of the OPO Lab project with João Barata Feyo, which consistes in a multidisciplinary center based in Porto for the promotion of advanced research and educational activities and cultural events. GABRIELA VAZ PINHEIRO Gabriela Vaz Pinheiro holds a Sculpture Degree from the Faculdade de Belas Artes da Universidade do Porto; European Scenography Master of Arts from Central Saint Martin s College; Theory and Practice of Public Art & Design Master of Arts from Chelsea College of Art & Design. PhD by Project from Chelsea College, with thesis: Art from Place: the expression of cultural memory in the urban environment and in place specific art interventions. Scholar from Fundação Calouste Gulbenkian (FCG), Secretaria de Estado da Cultura, Contemporary Art Society and The London Institute. She has a continuous involvement in interdisciplinary seminars and publishes in international art and art research magazines. Exhibits, in group and individually, as Gabriela Vaz since 1985, both in Portugal and abroad, holding some Awards and Honorary Mentions. Her most recent work deals with the repositioning of concepts such as: locality and the revocation of local iconologies, everyday narratives, territory and fluidity. Some of these questions take the shape of place specific interventions both in Portugal and abroad. She is the curator for the Arts and Architecture Programme at Guimarães 2012 European Capital of Culture. PEDRO JORDÃO Pedro Jordão, a native of Aveiro, is an architect trained at the University of Coimbra and develops a practice between architecture, research and cultural programming. He has developed a systematic work in the area of culture, with natural emphasis on his role as Director and Programmer at Film Society of Aveiro and Associação Cultural Mercado Negro and later Teatro Aveirense. His career as an architect began in the workshop of Cristina Guedes and Francisco Vieira de Campos. He was founder and first Director of the NU architecture magazine and he continuous to write for various national and international publications of architecture and contemporary culture. He was the commissioner for the Central Region for "Dwelling Portugal 06/08" and more recently he curated of the Guimarães 2012 European Capital of Culture exhibition ARCHIGRAM Experimental Architecture

6 CURATORS / MODERATORS BIO EMANUEL DE SOUSA is a registered architect graduated from FAUP Porto and TU Delft. He previously collaborated with Steven Ehrlich, Peter Eisenman, and José Manuel Carvalho Araújo. He taught Urban Planning at FAUP and History and Theory Studies at AA. He is concluding his PhD at Architectural Association, supported by FCT Portugal, entitled Heterotopia: Reframing Spatial Practices and Boundaries, 1960 present. He is co editor of Propositions: Ideology in Transparency (AA, 2010). FRANCISCA AROSO is a registered architect graduated from ESAP Porto, holds a Master Degree in Advanced Architecture from IaaC Barcelona. She has worked in architectural offices in Portugal and Spain. In 2008/09 she was Teaching Assistant in Digital Fabrication, Parametric Design and Digital Tectonics, having worked at FabLab BCN. She was part of Full Print3d DHUB Barcelona curatorial team. She is a PhD candidate at Architectural Association EmTech, with the thesis entitled Fabrication based design of transitional spaces.
