3 Art.1 The Graduate School in SRUCTURAL ENGINEERING Modelling, Preservation and Control of Materials and Structures Regulations In accordance with article 8, comma 3, of the University s Regulation concerning the Graduate School issued with D.R. 997 of December 16, 2003, to whom we refer and later on, of brevity, named Regulation of Graduate School, and with the institution at the Department of Mechanical and Structural Engineering of the Graduate School named Graduate School in STRUCTURAL ENGINEERING Modelling, Preservation and Control of Materials and Structures, the Department Council adopts the Regulation to discipline the activity of the Graduate School in Structural Engineering Modelling, Preservation and Control of Materials and Structures, to indicate the specific objectives, the internal organization and the behaviour rules of doctorate students that attend it. Art. 2 Definitions The following definitions will apply: University: The University of Trento; The Graduate School: The Graduate School in Structural Engineering Modelling, Preservation and Control of Materials and Structures; Doctor of Philosophy degree (PhD): the English translation of the qualification of Doctorate Researcher; Administrative Offices: The University of Trento. Mechanical and Structural Engineering Department. Partners: the public bodies, including the Universities, and the private organizations that take part in the PhD Programme. Art. 3 Objectives of the PhD Research Programme To complete the general objectives of each Graduate School as indicate in art. 3 of the PhD Regulation in accordance with the Faculty of Engineering, the present Regulations discipline the activation and the operation of the Graduate School in STRUCTURAL ENGINEERING - Modelling, Preservation and Control of Materials and Structures of the Department of Mechanical and Structural Engineering. Art. 4 The Bodies of the Graduate School The Graduate School consists of the following: a. Head b. Vice-Head c. Graduate school Council d. Graduate school Committee Art. 5 The Head The Head elected by the Graduate School Council, by full and associate professors belonging to the Council, is in charge of the Graduate School with the following powers: a) He/she addresses the Graduate School activities. He/she organizes the teaching programme and calls the Graduate School Council for meetings, executing the decisions taken. 3/11

4 b) He/she convenes the Graduate School Committee for meetings. c) He/she allows students to develop research activities with the associated universities or with the other public subjects involved in the PhD activities, for a period less than six months. d) He/she writes a detailed report to be submitted to the Evaluation Committee of the University of Trento, at the end of each academic year. In such report, the methods which allow the qualification s requirements to be kept in the Graduate School are hightlighted. Besides, he/she specifies the factors that consent an overall monitoring system of the Graduate School s quality and of PhD students. e) He/She designates a Deputy-Head who collaborates with him/her, and stands in for him in the event of illness and non availability Art. 6 The Deputy-Head The deputy-head is nominated by the Head. He co-operates with the Head and he replaces him when necessary. Art. 7 The Graduate School Council The Graduate School Council is composed by full, associate professors and researchers that belong to the research areas pertinent to the Doctorate Curricula, at least eight of them coming from the University of Trento and it s composed of representatives of the subjects associated with the doctoral activities. Besides the Graduate School Council includes two representatives elected by the doctoral students that take part in meeting when the Council deliberates about the general progress of programme and training courses. It s supported by the Department Assistant. The Graduate School Council carries out the activities listed hereafter: a) It organizes courses and others activities of the Graduate School. b) It sets out the teaching programme, each year, including teaching activities and the relative calendar. c) It follows the progress of the student s career. d) It approves the teaching programme of students, establishing times and methodologies for intermediate checks. e) It designates a tutor belonging to the associated subjects. f) It allows PhD students to study abroad for a period more than six months. g) It approves student s stage organised by Italian or foreign organisations for a period more than six months. h) It can allow students teaching, supplementary activity and activity extra curricula to be carried out. i) It approves student s admission for the subsequent year j) It presents to the Final Examination Committee a report about each student s activity. k) It approves the annual reports prepared by the Head. l) It declares the equipollence between qualifications to participate to competitive examination. m) It suggests members for the Admission Committee and for the Final Examination Committee for the Dissertation defence. n) It consults the student s representatives two students elected from the PhD students each year, on questions concerning the state of the school and the teaching trend. The Graduate School Council carries out all the functions foreseen by art. 12 of the PhD Regulation. The Graduate School Council, with own deliberation, can delegate the Graduate School Committee in carrying out of all or parties of his functions. 4/11

5 Art. 8 Graduate School Committee The Graduate School Committee is composed of six members, including full, associate and researchers. It is convened and chaired by the Head and speeds up the activities delegated by the Graduate School Council. It puts the Graduate School Council s resolutions into effect. The Graduate School Committee includes two area s managers and a Secretary; moreover it s supported by the Department Assistant. Art. 9 Area s Managers They are selected from the research areas (curricula) which characterize the School and are part of the Graduate School Committee. Art. 10 Delegates They can be appointed by the Graduate School Council to deal with specific activities like: budget, internal recruitment and external funding, recruit students, find jobs, syllabus and regulations, national and international relationships, admissions and fellowships, finance and student aids, minority affairs, etc. Art Secretariat It is composed of a Secretary and supervised by the Department Assistant. A Secretary or the Department Assistant writes the minutes of Graduate School s meetings; also the Department Assistant coordinates the secretariat activity. Art. 12 The specific training objectives The Graduate School in Structural Engineering tends to co-ordinate and valorise complementary skills in various research fields of Materials, Structural Mechanics and Structural Engineering, of great current interest. To this end, the Doctorate is articulated into areas of research so that it can use together the capabilities of other disciplines in a modern holistic approach to research. The basic scientific-disciplinary areas are: ICAR/07 - Geotechnics ICAR/08 Strength of Materials ICAR/09 Structural Analysis and Design ICAR/10 Building Technology and Architecture ICAR/11 Building Process ICAR/18 History of architecture ING-IND/12 Measurements on mechanical systems ING-IND/13 Mechanical dynamical systems and applied mechanics ING-INF/03 Telecommunications ING-INF/04 Automatic Control ING-INF/05 Systems for data processing 5/11

6 ING-INF/07 Electrical and electronic measurements The Doctorate programme is oriented towards the development of research and training researchers in two main areas of research (curricula): a) Materials and Structural Mechanics b) Design, Preservation and Control of Structures. The doctorate programme includes specific courses, seminars held by Professors from the same and other Universities of considerable scientific value and laboratory work carried out in research laboratories. The specific courses offer the candidates the chance to acquire advanced skills in research activities that can be profitably applied to a variety of careers in research, teaching and advanced professional practice in the broad sense of structural engineering, encompassing mechanics of solids, smart structures, architectural, earthquake and geotechnical engineering. The provisions pertinent to art. 5 and 27 of University Regulation are applied to these curricula (specializations). Art. 13- The Institutional training activities The school programme is articulated into 2 curricula (areas of research): 1) Mechanics of materials and structures: The relevant courses focus on the mechanics of solids and structures and, more in general, on the study of the mechanical behaviour of materials. The Ph.D. curriculum develops fields of research inherent to the behaviour of a wide class of materials: from the innovative ones, viz. structural ceramics, composites, metal alloys with phase transformation, piezoelectric, smart materials, polymers, to those traditional to building engineering, i.e. steel, concrete, masonry, wood, stone, earth. The study of the mechanical behaviour of such materials, both from the viewpoint of the constitution and from that of the conditions of resistance, will be dealt with at an experimental level and from the technical/computational viewpoint. 2) Design, preservation and control of structures: The relevant courses focus on the following topics: - analysis and performance-based design of structures; - safety evaluation of structures using experimental analyses based on non-destructive testing techniques and comparison with computer models; - durability and restoration to be considered during design; - monitoring, analysis, diagnosis and identification of historical-monumental buildings and bridges, considering soil-structure interaction phenomena; - strengthening and control of historical-monumental buildings and bridges; - analysis and design of smart structures. The teaching programme includes monographic courses, seminary cycles held by internal and external Lecturers and laboratory work. The monographic courses are aimed at giving basic preparation in carrying out highly qualified research activities. The thesis topic and the tutor must be determined within the end of the first year, in agreement with the Graduate School Council. In order to obtain a PhD the candidate must gain 180 formation credits distributed as follows: 6/11

7 - 50 credits reserved for the attendance of specific courses offered by the Ph.D. programme or by other Ph.D. programmes in other universities within the sphere of co-operation agreements with similar Ph.D. courses or for the attendance of other specialist courses of an equal level offered by Italian or foreign universities; - 20 credits for training courses and/or the attendance of seminars and specialization courses within companies and public and private research institutes. The Graduate School Council evaluates the compatibility of such activities with the training objectives and establishes number of credits according to the value of the same. Teaching experience is required of all Structural Engineering PhD students prior to taking the final examination. Teaching experience is defined as lecturing in either a problem-solving section or laboratory session, or in an undergraduate course designated by the Graduate School Council. The requirement can be fulfilled by service as a teaching assistant credits for research activity on the specific topic of the PhD dissertation. Each PhD student has the possibility of spending a period of activity in a foreign research centre, which shall not exceed 18 months (also not continuous). The location of such a period abroad will be agreed upon by the PhD student, his/her own tutor and the Graduate School Council. Art. 14 Criteria to formulate a syllabus A syllabus is composed of: a) fundamental courses devoted to strengthen the basic knowledge of the PhD student; b) advanced courses which allow the PhD student to specialize in some research topics related to the curriculum chosen; c) attendance of seminars offered by universities and research institutes; d) specialization courses offered by research institutes; e) lectures offered by the PhD student in either a problem-solving section or laboratory session, or in an undergraduate course. f) training courses within companies and research institutes. Fundamental courses are offered only once each year, while advanced courses are taught generally once every two years and are scheduled to be consistent with the curricula. A schedule of course offerings is available from the Graduate School each fall for the following academic year. Art. 15 Admission Requirements and Selection Criteria The formative curriculum for each PhD candidate in Structural Engineering must be equivalent to that necessary to obtain the title of II level specialist degree or to that of an academic title obtained abroad and declared equivalent by the Graduate School Council. If such minimum requirements are not satisfied by the preceding formative curriculum, the Candidate must integrate the formative process foreseen for the first two years of the PhD programme, based on institutional courses offered within the specialist degree courses. Applications are also taken in from students who expect to complete their degree by the date of the examination. In such cases admission will be "conditional" and the applicant must be able to present the relevant degree certificate, or a declaration that the degree has been conferred (in conformity with Presidential Decree n. 445 of 28 December 2002, applicable only to citizens of the European Union), by the date of the examination. Otherwise, the applicant will lose the right to be admitted to this Ph.D. programme. The graduate school is open to all with no restriction on sex, age or citizenship. The admission to the graduate programme is highly competitive. 7/11

8 A Selection is necessary in order to assess the candidate s knowledge and aptitude in research in the areas referred to in articles 12 and 13. The selection is performed by the Admission Committee in two stages: a) A pre-selection based on the evaluation of: i) a curriculum vitae of the PhD candidate including scientific publications; ii) a research proposal (max. 3 pages) based on the scientific-disciplinary areas listed in Art. 12; iii) two letters of introduction. Each candidate is assigned points by the Committee and applicants obtaining a minimum score of 36/60 are short-listed. b) A selection based on: i) a written test or a lecture on topics of a fundamental discipline selected among the scientific-disciplinary areas listed in Art. 12; ii) an oral exam; iii) a test on knowledge of the English language. Candidates obtaining the minimum score of 36/60 both in the written test or from the lecture, and in the oral exam will be short-listed. Foreign applicants may request that their admission exams be held in a foreign language. It is at the discretion of the Admission Committee whether to uphold or reject such a request. As regards all that not explicitly foreseen, are applied the provisions of art. 19 of PhD Regulation. Art. 16 Rights and Duties of PhD students PhD students must attend the Graduate School programme and carry out research activities on a full time basis according to the schedules and the regulations laid down by the Graduate School Committee, as specified in art. 13. If a student is funded through grants, obtained from other institutions, which are attached to a specific research project, he or she is expected to pursue that specific project in his/her PhD research. For the duration of the PhD programme, PhD students are insured by the University against accidents and damage to third parties that occur in circumstances pertaining to the PhD programme. From the beginning and for the whole duration of the PhD course, a public service employee accepted for a PhD course may request leave of absence for reasons of study, without monetary allowances, and may benefit from the study grant, where the required conditions are met. In the case of admission to a PhD course without a study grant, or should he/she waive it, the person on absence of leave enjoys the economic remuneration and social insurance and retirement benefits enjoyed by the public administration where he/she is employed. Should the employee terminate employment in public administration in the two years succeeding his / her having obtained a PhD, the amounts paid out during the course of the PhD studies are claimed back. As regards rights and duties of PhD students, art. 24 of the University s Regulations hold. The pre-candidacy status is limited to four years. The qualification exam and submission of the doctoral dissertation must be done within six years. However the cycle has a length of three years. While the fundamental objective of the Graduate School is to provide PhD students with a high quality research education, PhD students must develop a sense of ethics, social and professional responsibility within mutual trust and respect. 8/11

9 Art. 17 Carrying out training activities as well abroad The following regulations hold with reference to: a) Specific courses (50 credits) A course offered by this PhD programme is typically 20 hours teaching and 40 hours homework and is worth 5 credits. The candidate will attend at least 10 specific courses during the first and second year. Six courses must be fundamental. The remaining four courses are advanced and two of them can be chosen from other PhD programmes in other universities in co-operation with the University of Trento, or held by national and international institutes. The candidate is allowed to attend PhD level courses offered by other institutions. The tutor upon approval of the Graduate School Council assigns the credits earned with an external course. The internal and external courses chosen by the candidate must be approved by the tutor and by the Graduate School Council at the beginning of each year. b) Training courses (20 credits) Training courses, teaching activities and/or the attendance of seminars and specialization courses within companies and research institutes must amount to 100 hours. The tutor upon approval of the Graduate School Council assigns the credits earned with these courses and activities. Also these courses and activities are registered. Teaching experience is required of all Structural Engineering PhD students prior to taking the final examination. Teaching experience is defined as lecturing in either a problem-solving section or laboratory session, or in an undergraduate course designated by the Graduate School Council. The requirement can be fulfilled by service as a teaching assistant. Particular attention will be paid to developing relationships with Universities abroad. We trust candidates will spend up to a total of eighteen months abroad working at foreign research centres. The Candidate will agree the foreign residences with the Tutor and with the Graduate School Council. Many members of Graduate School are currently involved in research in cooperation with Universities in and out of Europe. Art. 18 Methods for Carrying out laboratory activities The Laboratories that can be used are those of computation and materials testing as well as the infrastructure and libraries of the Institutes and Departments involved. Facilities can be used at research centres, industries or other Universities, on the basis of agreements between these and the Graduate School. Other scientific and didactic facilities can be used, such as: - The Specialization Course for Reinforced Concrete Structures, Milan Polytechnic. - The Specialization School for "Monument Restoration, Milan Polytechnic, History and Architecture Conservation Department. - The International Centre for Mechanical Sciences. Udine. - The Safety in Structural Mechanics Unit, Joint Research Centre, ISPRA, ITALY. - The Earthquake Engineering Research Center, University of Bristol, Bristol, UK. 9/11

10 Art. 19 Carrying out examination Each course must be completed by an exam, whose procedure is left to the discretion of the teacher (test, oral exam, report, etc.). Each exam is registered: At the end of 1 st and 2 nd year the PhD student has to present a report about the activities carried out, in order to pass to the next year. A condicio sine qua non in obtaining the title of PhD is that the candidate s activity shall have produced results of hight scientific (48 credits) value as documented in the final dissertation. The dissertation must be delivered in draft form to the School Graduate Council 3 months before the final date and must be discussed with the School Graduate Council itself. The final examination consists of a public discussion of the PhD thesis. The procedures to be followed are reported in title V of the University Regulations Art. 20 Criteria for the evaluation of the PhD Program In order to compute and to acknowledge credits for each PhD Student, the Graduate School Council examines the equivalence of the courses abroad in accordance with art. 17 above. Art. 21 Specific Curricula The PhD Student has the possibility to make a specific curriculum different from whose listed in art. 13 above. It is clear that it has to be subjected to a Graduate School Council s approval. 11 Art. 23 Amendments to the Regulation In reference to article 8, comma 4, of the PhD Regulation and after the starting up of the Graduate School, each modification of the present Regulations, must be approved by the Department of Mechanical and Structural Engineering, consulting the Graduate School Council, and comes into force after the publication in the Department s website. Art. 24 Referral Rule For all else not expressly mentioned in the present regulations, the provisions established by Italian law and the Graduate School Regulation shall apply. 11/11
