1 TU/e Graduate School Department of the Built Environment Graduate program Architecture, Building and Planning Human behavior is influenced by the built environment, and certainly in a small country like the Netherlands this environment is subject to longterm planning. This means that building engineers have a high degree of responsibility in finding the right balance between science, technology and design. However, the conflicting interests also include economic, political and environmental aspects. The Netherlands is changing in demographic terms and in its social structures. Society will have to provide constant stimulation for building with innovative and market-oriented concepts. One of the characteristics of the built environment is that its physical lifetime is usually longer than the economic lifetime. This means that one of the focal research areas is the development of durable, flexible, environmentally-friendly and safe buildings and installations. Within the Architecture, Building and Planning graduate program, the following programs are available: Master s programs - Architecture, Building and Planning - Construction Management and Engineering (3TU) Designer s programs - Architectural Design Management Systems - Smart Energy Buildings and Cities PhD programs Where innovation starts

2 Alumnus Bert Dirrix is now working in his own architectural firm diederendirrix I became fascinated by the monumental mines in South Limburg, where I grew up. I wanted to work in design, which is why I decided to do Architecture at TU/e. The 1970s was a turbulent time at the university and in Eindhoven. Social problems and design issues went hand in hand, and there was tremendous freedom to experiment. Today the Department of the Built Environment is still a place where you can choose your own direction. But most of all it s a place where you learn essential qualities like self-critical abilities and an integrated approach. While I was graduating I was able to redesign an empty space in the center of Eindhoven. In 1984 I started my own architectural firm, in which I work with a lot of passion on finding intelligent solutions to complex urban planning issues. Master s programs Architecture, Building and Planning Interdisciplinarity is the key characteristic of the Master s program in Architecture, Building and Planning. Based on your own discipline, you will learn to understand the problems of other disciplines. This will be important in your future career because the work of a small architectural bureau cannot be compared to that of large project developers. Through the project-driven education, you will develop a design-oriented approach that is based on independent analytical ability, synthesis skills and the many opportunities offered by information technology. In addition to communication skills and presentation techniques, a scientific approach and a good measure of creativity are essentials in the design process. Graduation options Architecture What characterizes Dutch design is its careful avoidance of stock-in-trade solutions and its willingness to consider radical possibilities. That is not, of course, an aim in itself. The high quality built environment that emerges from the careful consideration of issues specific to a situation requires an innovative attitude. Moreover, this high quality built environment does not just serve a specific group of interested users but has to serve humanity and its environment as a whole. To achieve this, our educational and research programs, clustered under the title Architecture of The Living City, have become increasingly integrated. We look at how design at different scales from technological product, the architectural object, all the way to the urban assembly can support and inform each other. With regard to the design of the built environment in the Netherlands, a country with little available space, an extraordinarily high population density and a dear love of its distinctive landscape, it is a real challenge to find the right balance between good science, adequate technology and properly responsive design. This course is about finding the right fit between economic, social, political and environmental demands. The building industry needs to come up with innovative answers that can help the markets and governments move towards an appropriate model for future development without throwing out the wealth that we have built up. Real Estate Management & Development The built environment and the real estate contained in it are vital. Individuals and communities need structured and conditioned spaces. And on a global scale real estate makes up more than 60% of the world s equity. The real estate market comprises various market segments ranging from business premises like offices, stores and commercial buildings to non-profit real estate like housing corporation properties. It comes as no surprise, therefore, that there is an increasing interest in real estate management. This once static field has become a dynamic activity in which active monitoring of the market for real estate boosts the market position and responds to the dynamics of demand for and use of real estate. In such a way investments are safeguarded. Real estate management can thus be regarded as a specialism of evaluation and calculation in which structural and engineering knowledge and

3 Student Chanakya Kalyanapu Master Construction Management and Engineering I did my Bachelor in Civil Engineering at the Vellore Institute of Technology University (VITU), India. In 2008 I was an exchange student at TU/e. During this period I got acquainted with the city, the people, the culture, the university and the weather! This motivated me to choose TU/e for my Master s course. It suits me perfectly here because I was looking for a program that blends both the construction and management parts. The Master also offers courses like Technology Entrepreneurship, which is extremely helpful because I am starting my own business. That s also why I am currently graduating on the subject of increasing new venture potentials. It s amazing that I can work on my business plan and my graduation at the same time. experience are combined with market insight and operational analysis to form the basis for real estate management and development. Structural Design The Structural Design Master s track is a mix of courses and projects. For this Master s track part of the course is communal and compulsory, and forms the basis for every structural designer. Elective subjects enable students to specify and acquire individually oriented competencies. The practical project comes under the elective subjects. The aim is for the student to take the competencies he or she has acquired and develop these in a practical situation. Every student is assigned a mentor to supervise the elective components in this Master. Urban Design and Planning The Urban Design and Planning Master s track focuses on strategic interventions in the spatial environment. Societal developments relating to spatial planning issues have a significant influence on the quality of life and the vitality of our society, both now and in the future. Contemporary notions about topics like public space, living and environment (sustainability) are changing drastically. Modern urban design and planning responds to these societal challenges with spatial solutions based on a combination of research and exploratory design. Urban design and planning is a broad subject, bordered by architecture and spatial planning, and drawing from many other disciplines. The scale at which an urban designer and planner works ranges from the immediate environment to a whole region and landscape. The way in which the scales of spatial planning are interwoven with the complexity of space, economy, demographics and mobility means that the urban designer and planner must be at home in both design and professional research. Building Physics and Services The Building Physics and Services Master s Track covers a wide range of interdisciplinary research topics connected to building physics and building services. The aim is to acquire new knowledge and integrate and develop design methods that lead to a sustainable, healthy, comfortable and productive indoor and outdoor environment. The focus of attention is on physical aspects and processes such as heat and mass transfer in building constructions, indoor air quality, lighting, acoustics, heating, ventilation, air-conditioning and materials. BPS has a well equipped laboratory and qualified technical staff. Research is carried out in the laboratory as well in situ. The basic facilities allow for a wide range of experiments in all the aspects of building mentioned. The computing power laboratory also provides advanced simulation software like Fluent, ESP-r, Dirac, Radiance and COMSOL.

4 Construction Management and Engineering (CME) The increasingly dynamic complexity of construction and, consequently, the changing perception of interests and values have initiated the development of a new program in the domain area between construction engineering and scientific management and economics. This Master s program is both process and organization oriented, with a central focus on design, organization and management of urban development and management processes. The specialization of CME at TU/e consists of Construction Management & Urban Development. CMUD is a scientific Master that focuses on the societal and scientific analysis of real world problems in which two domains of science are combined: (urban) building sciences plus management and innovation sciences. The major TU/e departments - the Department of the Built Environment, and Industrial Engineering & Innovation Sciences (IE&IS) - support the education and research. Both departments combine their distinctive research-driven and subject-oriented approach of traditional engineering education in this Master s program. The two-year degree program has a clear scientific signature profile and strong involvement in the research activities of staff members and PhD researchers. 3TU Master s program The three leading universities of technology in the Netherlands - Eindhoven University of Technology, Delft University of Technology and the University of Twente - have joined forces in the 3TU.Federation. Together they offer five Master s programs, including: CME. CME at TU/e focuses on Construction Management & Urban Development (CMUD). The TU/e Department of the Built Environment, and Industrial Engineering & Innovation Sciences are supporting the education and research of this interdisciplinary Master s program. As a student you are assured of the best education in this field. You will be taught by the very best lecturers education has to offer. For all Master s programs - Study possibilities: Full-time - Degree: Master of Science - Times of entry: September (full program availability), February (limited) - Duration: 2 years (120 ECTS) Graduation options The graduation project is provided in the form of two graduation studios. Participation in one of the two studios is obligatory for all CME students at TU/e. They work on their graduation project within one of the two studios: Process engineering for urban development: When cities, urban areas or industrial districts are to be developed or redeveloped, complex decision-making processes are started in order to bring shareholders and stakeholders together. Negotiation, the strategic behavior of shareholders and stakeholders, simulation of expected results and process governance are the focus of the graduation projects in this studio. Business engineering for urban development: Within this studio cities and urban districts are considered and approached in terms of entrepreneurial entities: profit and non-profit companies. In the individual graduation projects, the subjects are value features, exploitation possibilities, management and financing concepts.

5 Designer s programs Architectural Design Management Systems Following your Master s graduation, you can continue on to the Designer s program Architectural Design Management Systems of the Architecture, Building and Planning graduate program. High-tech industry and the building world need experienced designers able to design complex new products and processes. A Master s degree may well give you the requisite theoretical knowledge but you still lack sufficient practical experience. A Designer s program gives you that practical experience, which boosts your market value for industry. You graduate with a Professional Doctorate in Engineering (PDEng) degree. The Architectural Design Management Systems program begins with a year-long course followed by a major in-company design assignment of 9 to 12 months. The Architectural Design Management Systems program focuses on improvement and innovation in building design processes. The emphasis is on both the remodeling of these processes and the organization of their management. - Study possibilities: Full-time and part-time - Degree: Professional Doctorate in Engineering - Times of entry: - full-time: 2 entries (September / February) - part-time: 4 entries (every quarter of the year) - Duration: 2 years - Smart Energy Buildings and Cities Following your Master s graduation, you can continue on to the Designer s program Smart Energy Buildings and Cities of the Architecture, Building and Planning graduate program. High-tech industry needs experienced designers able to design complex new products and processes. The Smart Energy Buildings and Cities program offers a course focusing on practically oriented design cases: two in the first year and one major industry assignment in the second year. The Smart Energy Buildings and Cities program trains MSc graduates to become a technological designer, capable of integrating relevant knowledge in an integral design process into a dedicated, Smart Energy system for the built environment. Based on his specialty, the designer can contribute to the development of: - Intelligent and energy-efficient building components and/or - Building concepts aimed at the intelligent use of the least possible energy and/or - Intelligent networks aimed at matching the supply and demand of energy. - Study possibilities: Full-time - Degree: Professional Doctorate in Engineering - Entry: January 2014 Application: from June - August Duration: 2 years The Technological Designer s programs are coordinated in the 3TU.School for Technological Design, Stan Ackermans Institute. The institute represents the three universities of technology in the Netherlands and was established in mid-2006.

Several PhDs combine this with a part-time job as a teacher. During the PhD you will develop over a period of four years into an independent researcher. You will undertake a study within the domain of Architecture, Building and Planning under the supervision of a professor, and complete the process with a dissertation. You will write scientific papers, present results at conferences and take part in seminars as well as undertake some teaching. In addition, there are many possibilities to further your development, for instance through courses and training geared to personal development and through additional scientific schooling. Some TU/e PhD students are employed by the university, which means that you receive a salary during your PhD program. You are also entitled to attractive secondary employment benefits. Other PhDs are employed by a school or educational institute and do their PhD part-time.
