1 Members of the Board of Directors Sue Musson Chair Appointed November 2014 Sue has 20 years Board-level experience as an executive and non-executive director in commercial and public sector organisations. She is managing director of a management consultancy company specialising in Board development and runs a property holding company. Sue was the senior independent director at Bridgewater Community Healthcare NHS Trust, based in Wigan, and is a former non-executive director at Alder Hey Children s NHS Foundation Trust in Liverpool. Sue was born in the north-eastern US state of Connecticut and first came to the UK as a visiting student at the University of York. After graduating from Columbia University, she moved to the UK and began her career in management consultancy, working with the European Commission and a number of UK and European agencies and Government departments. Sue holds a number of public appointments. She is patient representative on the National Joint Registry (NJR), the expert body for joint replacement surgery in the UK. In this role, she works closely with her colleagues to bring the patient s voice to the work of the Registry; as the NJR s Hippy Chick, she also authors a popular blog recounting her experiences of joint replacement surgery. Sue regularly chairs appointment panels for the Judicial Appointments Commission, and is a member of the Panel Advising Foundation Trust Governors. Sue, who lives in Lymm, Cheshire, is married to Mike and has two children, Harry and Annabel. An integrated care organisation
2 Graham Slee / Vice-chairman Appointed September 2011 In February 2011 Graham took early retirement from his post of Chief Port Health Officer for Mersey Port Health Authority. The Authority is responsible for fifty three miles of coastline and includes the various dock complexes and Liverpool Airport. The role of the Authority is to protect Public and Animal Health within parameters lain down by the European Commission and World Health Organisation. Prior to that he was for a number of years seconded to Central Liverpool NHS PCT as an Environmental Health Consultant in the Cheshire/Merseyside Health Protection Team. Graham is a Chartered Environmental Health Practitioner and is a Fellow of the Chartered Institute of Environmental Health. He is currently a Non-executive Director for the Association of Port Health Authorities and also an American Company owned by the Chartered Institute. Originally from Glasgow, Graham has lived in Aughton for over thirty years. Paul Burns and Senior Independent Director Appointed June 2010 Paul is a practising Barrister, Head of the Local Government and Social Housing Department and member of the Management Board at his Chambers, which has bases in Liverpool, Manchester and Leeds. Paul is widely acknowledged as a leader in his specialist fields of local government law and social housing law, which encompass areas as diverse as anti-social behaviour, landlord and tenant, human rights, mental health, public law, personal injury, risk management & governance. He has extensive experience advising and representing large public and private sections organisations and is regularly instructed in high profile and test case litigation
3 Rodney Dykes Appointed February 2008 Rodney has lived locally for over 30 years. Until his retirement in 2007, he was Managing Director of RDHS Limited, a housing and regeneration consultancy based in Formby. He is a Fellow of both the Chartered Institute of Housing and of the Chartered Institute of Environmental Health. After working as an Environmental Health Officer in local authorities, he was deputy chief executive of two major housing associations before setting up his company, RDHS Ltd, which he ran for over 25 years. He has been awarded international prizes for his housing work by professional bodies in the United States of America and Canada. He is also a Trustee of Henshaws Society for Blind People. He was Deputy Chair of the Liverpool Housing Action Trust for a period of 10 years until Jeannette Newman Appointed July 2012 Jeannette has had a long career in the NHS starting in 1977 as a wages clerk at Whittingham Hospital, a large mental health unit just outside of Preston. She left the NHS in December 2011 after being Deputy Chief Executive and Finance Director for NHS Central Lancashire. During her career she has worked in health services in Preston, Chorley, Ormskirk and Accrington and has undertaken many different roles from wages clerk to chief executive. In addition to her role in the Trust, she also undertakes other voluntary work including working as a mentor/expert advisor for Sported which a charity that looks to change the lives of young people through sport. She has lived in West Lancashire for more than nine years.
4 Caroline Whalley-Hunter Appointed September 2012 Caroline was brought up in Halsall and has lived in Burscough for more than 20 years. She was educated at the University of Liverpool and qualified as a Chartered Accountant with PwC in Manchester. She has more than 20 years post-qualification experience in the technology sector. Until recently she was with CSC as Finance Director for UK managed services solutions. She now works for BT Global Services as Head of Global Health and Local & Devolved government. She is married with a grown-up son. Su Fowler-Johnson Designate Appointed July 2012 Su has both a clinical and general management background and has worked in the NHS, academia, general practice, Department of Health and private sector consultancy. During her clinical career she specialised in the management of long-term conditions (asthma, diabetes), heart disease prevention, health promotion and travel health. While working at Enfield and Haringay, and Greater Manchester Strategic Health Authorities as a nurse advisor, she worked closely with independent practitioners (GPs, dentists and optometrists) as part of developing services in community and primary care. As a consultant Su has led on a range of large-scale consultancy projects spanning change programmes including clinical engagement in response to NHS reforms, service and workforce redesign to align workforce service and financial planning, international evaluation and developing regional frameworks to support strategic alliances and partnership working. She recently set up her own consultancy business. Su has lived in Burscough for more than 15 years. She also works with a local social enterprise focusing on developing child and adolescent mental health services.
5 Jonathan Parry Chief Executive Appointed 1999 Jonathan joined the Trust in 1988 as Unit General Manager and has seen and led many changes since that date. In 1992, he led the successful application to become an NHS Trust. In 1999, he was Project Director for the successful merger of acute services in Southport and Ormskirk and subsequently led the redesign of clinical services and the 60million building project to enhance clinical facilities on both sites. More recently, he led the drive to form an Integrated Care Organisation and is currently aiming to take that organisation into foundation trust status. Jonathan has worked exclusively in acute hospital management since joining the National Administrative Training scheme in the Northern Region in He has worked at a senior level in hospitals in Newcastle, Edinburgh, Wirral and Salford and is an accredited coach and psychometric practitioner. Jonathan has a PhD from Lancaster University Management School on Hospital Stories and Emotion. Damian Reid Deputy Chief Executive/Director of Finance Appointed December 2012 Damian was appointed to the Board from Cambridgeshire Community Services NHS Trust where he became director of finance in Between 2004 and 2008, Damian worked with the NHS foundation trust regulator Monitor and NHS London, supporting acute and mental health trusts that were applying to become foundation trusts. This included working with financially challenged trusts and assessing trusts for foundation trust authorisation. Prior to this, he worked in a range of finance roles, including the Compass Group, EC Harris and the Ministry of Defence. Damian has a Master of Business Administration degree, is qualified as a Chartered Secretary and also a Chartered Management Accountant. His hobbies include skiing and bridge.
6 Rob Gillies Executive Medical Director Appointed June 2013 Rob Gillies was formerly Deputy Medical Director at Pennine Acute Hospitals NHS Trust in Manchester which is the second largest non-teaching trust in the UK. He graduated from Liverpool University in 1982 doing basic surgical training in Liverpool and higher surgical training in the North East, West Midlands and a knee surgery fellowship in Toronto during He was appointed as a consultant orthopaedic knee surgeon at Mid-Cheshire Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust in In 2004 Rob was appointed as Associate Postgraduate Dean in the Mersey Deanery, NHS North West and Honorary Senior Lecturer at the University of Liverpool and led on the introduction of Modernising Medical Careers and the selection and assessment of junior doctors. In 2008, he obtained a Masters in Medical Education from University College London and in 2013 was awarded a Masters with merit in Medical Leadership from Birbeck, London University, and the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine. He has chaired regional and national surgical training committees for the Royal College of Surgeons of England. He has performed various Quality Assurance roles for Royal colleges, higher education institutions and the General Medical Council. Rob is also the Trusts Caldicott Guardian. Rob, who lives in Aigburth, Liverpool, is married and has three daughters and a son. In his spare time, Rob relaxes by following Liverpool Football Club and training German shorthaired pointer gun dogs. Simon Featherstone Director of Nursing and Quality Appointed January 2015 Simon Featherstone, the former Deputy Director of Nursing at Salford Royal NHS Foundation Trust, joined the Trust in January as Director of Nursing and Quality. Simon trained at Charing Cross School of Nursing, London, qualified in 1991 and worked at Guy s & St Thomas Hospital NHS Foundation Trust until 2009 when he moved to Salford.
7 Sheilah Finnegan Chief Operating Officer Appointed November 2009 Sheilah has worked in the Health Service for 33 years during which time she has held a range of managerial positions. Sheilah is married with one son and lives locally. She holds a Masters in Business Administration. She joined Southport in 1988 and has held a number of positions during her time at the Trust. Sheilah was appointed Director in 2001 and has most recently been appointed as Chief Operating Officer in November Her role covers the management of service directorates, service strategy and development, relationship management with Commissioners, performance and information management and contracting. Sheilah is also the Senior Information Risk Owner. Sharon Partington Director of Human Resources & Communications Appointed May 2003 Sharon Partington has been HR Director at Southport & Ormskirk Hospital NHS Trust since 1st May 2003 and is a Fellow of the Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development and has a Master of Science Degree in Human Resources and Development. She joined Southport Hospital in 1992 and has held a number of HR positions during her time in the trust. Sharon has 30 years Managerial experience and has held operational and HR Managerial posts in the private sector working for Marks & Spencer, Mothercare and Littlewoods Pools before moving to the NHS in She was educated in Southport and is married and lives in Southport.
