5 IV. Assessing Student Learning Outcomes Have the expected student learning outcomes for all courses or other experiences required in the program (section II) been assessed? If all relevant courses and/or other experiences have been assessed, summarize the assessment data. 7 V. Analyzing the Results of Assessment Have the assessment results for all courses and/or other experiences required in the program (section II) been analyzed? If so, summarize those analyses. In other words, what does the relevant SLO assessment data tell you about student learning in this program. The assessment results for all course required in the Business Management Certificate have been analyzed. Examining the average success rates of the applicable course level SLO s, indicates program SLO 3 is the strongest with average success rate of 95% in the three course levels SLO s measuring a student s ability to identify the basic elements of a contract and assess a contract s validity. Following closely with an average success rate of 94% was SLO 5 measuring a student s ability to assess business situations from an owner s/manger s prospective, including basic employment laws. After these two SLO s the success rate dropped considerably with the least severe being the 74% success rate in program level SLO 4. Program level SLO 4 dropped because course level SLO 3 for BUS 20 was not selected to be assessed even though the course has been regularly offered and other BUS 20 SLO s were measured. BUS 20 course level SLO 2 measures if students are able to analyze and identify possible resolutions to applied issues in business management. These topics are covered in a normal BUS 20 course. The average success rate for program level SLO 4 is 93% if the missing SLO is not included in the average. Given the success rates for the other BUS 20 course SLO s it would be expected that 93% is more likely the true success rate for program level SLO 4 had the missing SLO been measured. More serious, although not a devastating failure from a student s prospective, is the program level SLO 2 success rate of 83%. BUS 55 has not been successfully offered for some time. As a result, the transfer level accounting class has been substituted in its place. There is some loss of repetition and detail, but overall the students still learn the skills at the core of BUS 55 and the success rates in the transfer level course, indicate the students are proficient in the necessary skill. Excluding the missing BUS 55 SLO raises the success rate to 93% for program level SLO 2 The most serious concern identified by this assessment is the affect of not offering BUS 74, QuickBooks Pro, has had on program level SLO 1; demonstrate utilization of a variety of prevailing Microsoft Office applications and accounting software. The students are not exposed to any accounting software except the course management software they complete their homework in. It is hard to argue that the success rate is anything different than 74%, which is lower than any program level SLO measured. Business-Management Certificate Page 7 of 8
8 VI. Planning/implementing changes to pedagogy, facilities, etc. to improve learning Using the assessment results from sections IV and V, have changes to pedagogy, facilities, etc. been planned and implemented to improve learning in the program? Explain how the assessment results were used to plan and make changes to improve learning; and describe the changes implemented. If no changes are planned, explain why. Overall the Business Management Certificate is strong and the student success rates are high. Unfortunately, missing course level assessment data from BUS 20, BUS 55 and BUS 74 drives down the success rates of three Program Level SLO s. The lack of a BUS 20 SLO is merely a result of that particular SLO not being measured and the affect of BUS 55 not being offered is being mitigated by substituting the transfer level financial accounting course for the bookkeeping course. However, the result of BUS 74 not being offered is a serious concern and students are not leaning skills related to the use of an accounting package. BUS 74 will have to be offered if students are to gain these skills. Business-Management Certificate Page 8 of 8
