Allied Health Management Annual Assessment Report I. Program History History The Allied Health Management program was first offered at OIT in This program is still relatively new and enrollment continues to grow. As of fall 2010, ten students were enrolled in the program. Allied Health Management is offered at the Klamath Falls campus and online. Currently 3 Allied Health students are located in Klamath Falls; the remaining 7 students are completing the degree online. The online program graduated its first student in spring Allied Health Management bridges two different disciplines and departments: Allied Health and Management. Students must successfully complete their registry exam in their chosen allied health field to be eligible for admission into the Allied Health Management program. Graduates are prepared to manage labs, departments, and clinics, and to supervise technicians and technologists. II. Program Purpose The Allied Health Management faculty reviewed the program purpose, objectives, and learning outcomes during the fall faculty meeting in September The faculty reaffirmed the statements below: Allied Health Management Mission Statement: The Allied Health Management degree fully prepares students to assume managerial/supervisory positions in their specific allied health specialty anywhere in the United States. Educational Objectives: The Allied Health Management degree provides students with the knowledge and skills necessary to competently manage a clinical facility. Student Learning Outcomes: The Allied Health Management program consists of the nine core Management Department student learning outcomes as well as two student learning outcomes specific to this program. Upon completion of this program, Allied Health Management graduates will be able to: 1. Demonstrate an understanding of the functional areas of accounting, marketing, finance, management, and economics.
2. Demonstrate an understanding of the legal and social environment of business. 3. Demonstrate an understanding of the global environment of business. 4. Demonstrate an understanding of the ethical obligations and responsibilities of business. 5. Demonstrate the ability to use business tools. 6. Demonstrate information literacy. 7. Demonstrate the ability to communicate effectively. 8. Demonstrate the ability to apply knowledge of business concepts and functions in an integrated manner. 9. Demonstrate the ability to work effectively in teams and/or groups. 10. Demonstrate supervisory and management skills. 11. Identify HIPAA violations in a health care setting. 12. Discuss provisions regarding HIPAA insurance portability and continuity. III. Assessment Cycle Assessment schedule IACBE requires all accredited institutions to complete a full assessment cycle for all IACBE core student learning outcomes (SLOs 1-9) on an annual basis. Program-specific learning outcomes (PSLOs 10-12) will be assessed as follows: Program-Specific Learning Outcomes 10. Demonstrate supervisory and management skills. 11. Identify HIPAA violations in a health care setting. 12. Discuss provisions regarding HIPAA insurance portability and continuity. Table 1: Assessment Cycle for Allied Health Management PSLOs X X X X IV Assessment Activities The assessment results for the nine core student learning outcomes will be reported separately in the IACBE Report of Student Learning and Achievement. This report covers PSLO #10 only per the assessment cycle above.
PSLO #10 - Demonstrate supervisory and management skills. Direct Assessment #1: This PSLO was assessed in BUS 317, Health Care Management, fall 2010 using exam questions. This PSLO was assessed in both the onsite section of BUS 317 as well as in the online section of the course. Performance Criteria 1. Identify and analyze appropriate management practices. 2. Provide recommendations to improve management practices Assessment Method Exam questions. Exam questions. Measurement 1-4 Proficiency 1-4 Proficiency Minimum Acceptable Performance 80% of students score at or above 80% on relevant test questions. 80% of students score at or above 80% on relevant test questions. Results In-class 86% (online) 91% (onsite) 93% (online) 91% (onsite) Table 2: Assessment Results for PSLO #10 in BUS 317 The results between the two sections of BUS 317 were consistent. Although overall scores for the exam were acceptable, faculty noted that lower numbers of students met department standards regarding specific management topics. Questions addressing decision-making, organizing, and delegation made-up three areas of the exam in which students scores were noticeably lower. Direct Assessment #2: This PSLO was assessed in BUS 317, Health Care Management, fall 2010 using a case study. This PSLO was assessed in both the onsite section of BUS 317 as well as in the online section of the course.
Performance Criteria 1. Identify and analyze appropriate management practices. Assessment Method Measurement Case study. 1-4 Proficiency Minimum Acceptable Performance 80% achieve 3 or 4 rating Results 95% (online) 95% (onsite) 2. Provide recommendations to improve management practices Case study. 1-4 Proficiency 80% achieve 3 or 4 rating 77% (online) 95% (onsite) Table 3: Assessment Results for PSLO #10 in BUS 317 The case study results did vary between the two sections of BUS 317. The online instructor commented that although students are able to recognize management issues and practices, they lack the ability to provide appropriate recommendations. Similarly, although overall scores were high for the onsite section, the faculty member noted that students struggled to analyze and provide recommendations for the controlling function of management. As the Allied Health Management program is relatively new to OIT, and the number of students enrolled in the program is still low, it should be noted that only one Allied Health Management student was enrolled in BUS 317 fall Indirect Assessment: Given low enrollments, the department has yet to create indirect assessment tools for this program. In the coming year, a senior survey will be developed to assess students understanding of the Allied Health Management program s student learning outcomes and corresponding competencies. V. Summary of Student Learning Faculty teaching in the Allied Health Management program felt that student s knowledge of supervisory and management skills was good, while recognizing areas of weakness within each activity. Fall 2010 marked the first formal assessment completed within the Allied Health Management program, and although the student mix was not ideal, the faculty involved embraced the assessment process and incorporated improvements into their courses to address notable weak areas, including additional emphasis on decisionmaking, organization, and delegation and developing recommendations for the controlling function of management.
Additionally, following recent turnover in the Allied Health Management faculty, new PSLOs were identified and vetted to the department during the fall 2010 faculty meeting. PSLOs #11 and #12, listed and scheduled above, will replace the previous PSLO which focused on marketing plan development for a medical facility. Assessment of the new PSLOs will begin fall 2011.
