2 ATTACHMENT I 2 BLACK HILLS STATE UNIVERSITY Report on New Programs Implemented since June 2011 June 2012 Program Master of Education in Reading Approved December 2010; implemented fall 2011 Students Twenty-nine students enrolled in the Master of Education in Reading in fall This number includes twenty-seven new students and two students who chose to transfer from the Master of Science in Curriculum and Instruction to the new Master of Education. This is designed as a two-year program; therefore, most enrollees will graduate in August However, one of the students who transferred from the MSCI program is accelerating her program and will complete the MEd degree in August Faculty The program is being offered with no additional faculty, since it is replacing the reading specialization in the MSCI degree. (The last MSCI Reading cohort will complete in August 2012.) Courses Two new courses were developed, and multiple courses from the old MSCI reading specialization were significantly revised. These processes are complete, the new and revised courses are currently being taught. Comments This degree designed to focus directly on reading allows BHSU to address all International Reading Association Standards for Reading Professionals (K-12 Reading Specialists and K-12 Literacy Coaches) with increased strength.

Faculty: No new faculty required. There was one new course added ARTM 350, Introduction to Arts Management. Comments: A more aggressive marketing approach/strategy will be developed. Currently reviewing course rotation schedule. Since there is no enrollment or fiscal ramification due to the lack of graduates from this certificate, it is recommended that this be further reviewed in two years. Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL) Date Approved: Spring 2011 Implementation Date: Fall 2011 Currently there is one student enrolled in the program. Faculty: No new faculty required. No new courses were added. Comments: Advertising, a new brochure and a website presence have been implemented. Expectation is that the program will gain enrollments in the next two years. 8 ATTACHMENT VI 8 University of South Dakota Report on New Degree Programs June 2012 Program Bachelor of Science in Nursing RN-BSN Track Approved May Implemented September 2011 Four Year Pre-Licensure BSN Track Approved October Will be implemented fall Students As of June 2012, a total of 28 students are enrolled in the first cohort of the post-licensure BSN program. The first graduates will be in December Another 120 students have been admitted for fall Students interested in the pre-licensure BSN track are currently taking prerequisite/support coursework. The first cohort will be admitted to the nursing major in Vermillion and Sioux Falls in the fall 2013 semester. Rapid City will follow in the fall 2014 semester. Faculty Courses The post-licensure RN-BSN program has one faculty member/advisor and one full-time faculty member in addition to a director. One additional full-time faculty member has been hired to start for fall Current nursing faculty members across the state as well as adjunct faculty will be utilized to accommodate the larger 2012 class. The post-licensure BSN is offered online. Once students complete their support courses, they can complete the additional nursing courses in four terms (including a summer). Students typically take two courses a semester. For the fall 2012 cohort, a fast track will be offered whereby students finished with their support courses will be able to complete their nursing courses in two semesters. The four-term plan of study will remain an option. In March 2012, the number of required credit hours was changed from 128 to 120 to comply with BOR requirements for baccalaureate degrees. This was accomplished largely by lowering the number of electives. 1

9 ATTACHMENT VI 9 Other Comments The post-licensure RN-BSN program has had an overwhelming response, largely from past USD Associate of Science in Nursing (AS) students. South Dakota Board of Nursing approval process: USD was granted interim status approval status for the post-licensure RN-BSN program by the South Dakota Board of Nursing in March 2011, with the intent to apply for full status approval after graduation of the first class December Interim status is both a form of approval and a step in the state approval process. USD was granted prerequisite status approval for the pre-licensure BSN program by the South Dakota Board of Nursing in February 2012, with the intent to apply for Interim status approval prior to accepting students for admission. Prerequisite status is both a form of approval and a step in the state approval process. Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE) for Accreditation: The Bachelor of Science degree has applicant status for accreditation by the Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE). The CCNE accreditation visit is scheduled for September 12-14,
