Beach Camp at Sunset Bay is the premier ocean sports and marine science summer camp for students age 8 through high school. Beach Camp is located in the Seattle suburb of Edmonds on a beautiful stretch of sandy beach lying just west of the Puget Sound entrance to the Pacific Ocean. Beach Camp offers 8 weekly sessions starting each year on the first Monday after the Fourth of July. Beach Camp offers both sleepover and day camp options, as well as special programs in leadership development for counselors in training. Sunset Bay also hosts Beach Camp s sister camp, Annie Crawley s Scuba Diving Camp at Sunset Bay. Beach Camp students realize their potential and unlock their dreams on Sunset Bay s beautiful beaches and spectacular waterfront facility. Beach Camp fosters confidence and independence through two dozen ocean sport activities which teach important life skills and create memories to last a lifetime. The Sunset Bay Wharf is also available all year around as a meeting and activity venue for groups, organizations, and corporate events. 7 Welcome to Beach Camp 2013 Annie Crawley Whether you are joining Beach Camp for a week or a month, by yourself or with friends, you ll start out right at drop off making new friends. We promise not to make you wear our silly hats or sing camp songs, but the fun ocean vibe we have at Beach Camp is absolutely contagious. Beach Camp at Sunset Bay Edmonds, WA
After campers check in and order lunch, we walk down the ramp to our waterfront facility. Beach Camp Overnight Tips 1. Hats, sunglasses, and rash guards are helpful to protect you from the sun. We have sunshine nearly every day during summer camp and our protected bay on Puget Sound is calmer than most lakes. 2. Campers enjoy nearly two dozen sports and activities during the week, balancing time both in and out of water. We provide wetsuits, booties, life jackets and all equipment. Kids age 15 or over who want to try their hand at fishing or crabbing need to bring a Washington State Saltwater Fishing License which can be purchased prior to camp at most sporting goods stores. We also cater to groups. We host school groups, scout organizations, family reunions and more. 3. We have a special evening activity planned for every night. After a full day on the water, you may want a hooded sweatshirt and sweatpants to stay warm around the camp fire. We ll have a guitar for the musicians in the group but make sure to bring your favorite campfire story to share. We try to say yes as often as we can. Everything we do at camp revolves around the tides. Get ready for an adventure at Beach Camp at Sunset Bay.
The adventure begins as we fit campers with their wetsuit and booties for the week. Wetsuits fit snugly and keep you warm in and out of the water. They work by trapping water next to your skin that warms to your body temperature. Counselors help campers learn to get in and out of their wetsuits easily. Our camp store has great deals on wetsuits, booties, and other water sports gear to keep your Beach Camp adventure going all summer long. Beach Camp at Sunset Bay, Edmonds WA
After all the campers and counselors meet, we have our swim skill assessment activity in our wetsuits and booties. Everyone loves swimming in a wetsuit because they keep you warm and afloat. We also have wetsuit gloves, hoods, scooters, masks, snorkels, fins and other gear to try! Wetsuits are like your second skin. They are made of neoprene and come in different thicknesses. Beach Camp at Sunset Bay, Edmonds WA
You feel like you are walking on Jell-O the first time you try walking across our blue mats. Beach Camp at Sunset Bay, Edmonds WA
Ocean Zip Lines, Climbing Wall & Cliff Jumping Beach Camp at Sunset Bay, Edmonds WA Tandem ocean zip lining Campers experience ocean zip lining, rock climbing, and cliff jumping right on our dock. 1 of 18
Tap Images to View in Full Screen This camper broke our jumping record with 204 jumps during his week at Beach Camp!
We teach our campers the Washington State personal water craft and boater safety regulations. Life jackets are required in many of our activities. Campers make safety fun! Beach Camp at Sunset Bay, Edmonds WA
In addition to our deck and water sports activity areas, we have a batting cage, indoor skateboard ramps, and an indoor basketball court that doubles as a hockey rink. Beach Camp hosts campers between the ages of 8 through high school. We also handle special events and groups at our facility including family reunions, weddings, schools, scouts, and corporate events. Beach Camp at Sunset Bay, Edmonds WA
Beach Camp at Sunset Bay Tide Zones Wake Boarding Blue Mats & Green Dock
Low Tide Puget Sound High Tide The Puget Sound is an inlet of the Pacific Ocean. It is one of the most ecologically diverse ecosystems in North America. Beach Camp at Sunset Bay is located close to the Strait of Juan de Fuca where the Puget Sound enters the Pacific Ocean. Every day activities are planned around the changing tides. On summer afternoons, the tide comes in over our warm sand beach, making for warm waters for campers. Some of our activities can be experienced during the entire range of our tide cycle. Some activities like fat tire beach biking, skim boarding, and tide pooling are best during low tides, while zip lining, cliff jumping, trapeze, and rock climbing need a higher water level. Every day presents a new adventure as we experience an entire cycle of low tide, high tide, low low tide and high high tide.
Stand-Up Paddleboards Beach Camp at Sunset Bay, Edmonds WA
Before we start any activity we discuss best practices, safety, and equipment. In order to enjoy stand up paddleboarding it is important to have properly fitted paddles and an understanding of how to balance, stand, paddle, and turn. SUP Lesson, Beach Camp at Sunset Bay
Tap images to view in full screen We work together to carry the boards to the beach. Once on the beach, we listen to a briefing. We have a variety of boards. More experienced campers move on to advanced boards. Others trying paddleboarding for the first time start by balancing on their knees on wider boards.
Tap images to view in full screen Our younger campers prefer buddies. Buddies learn to trust one another. All campers like to end up in the water! All campers go on group excursions. Campers travel up and down our coast. All excursions finish back at Beach Camp. Campers learn how to carry and care for their boards. After learning SUP with our instructors, we have more opportunities to enjoy this sport through the week.
Overnight Camps Beach Camp is located near the 49th parallel, making for exceptionally long days in the summer. Spectacular sunsets at 9:00PM or later extend days, adding extra bonuses to the overnight program. Trust Walk, Beach Camp at Sunset Bay
During our overnight weeks, campers enjoy stand up paddleboarding at sunset. We see porpoises, harbor seals, Great Blue Herons, and jumping salmon. After paddling out together, we rest on our boards and enjoy the peace and beauty of the Puget Sound. Sunset, Beach Camp at Sunset Bay
Every evening we plan a unique activity. SUP in the evening is one of our favorites. 1 of 21 Surprise Sunset SUP Evening, Beach Camp at Sunset Bay

Beach Bikes & Skimboarding
Every year at Beach Camp we add unique new activities. This summer we discovered beach bikes with tires nearly six inches wide. We leave Beach Camp to explore the miles of surrounding coastline on our beach bikes. Beach Bikes, Beach Camp at Sunset Bay
Beach Camp creates a supportive environment for trying new experiences. We create camaraderie through special team building sessions and our tiered skill lessons build upon one another. Skimboarding, Beach Camp at Sunset Bay
Learning to throw the board is the first skill campers master for successful skimboarding. Our counselors come from across the nation, but include local talent who specialize in everything Puget Sound, including skimboarding. We encourage all of our campers to try every sport we offer. 1 of 15 Skimboarding lessons, Beach Camp at Sunset Bay
Our heated outdoor showers are a popular spot for rinsing off and heating up. Deck Showers, Beach Camp at Sunset Bay
Flying Water Trapeze Water Trapeze Beach Camp at Sunset Bay, Edmonds WA
Campers learn how to hold their arms for a great thrill on the flying trapeze. You lean back, with arms straight, take a step off, and go for it! We open the water trapeze when the tide is high. We can adjust the handle for different size campers. Flying Water Trapeze, Beach Camp at Sunset Bay, Edmonds WA
Beach Camp Dock, Edmonds WA Around midday we break for lunch so campers can fuel up and hydrate for the afternoon activities. Every day is different at Beach Camp. We have so many activities, we build flexibility into our schedule.
We offer meals catered by local restaurants so there is always tasty food for even the most picky eaters. Lunchtime Beach Camp, Edmonds WA
Celebrate Your Birthday at Camp We have a special tradition at camp for birthday celebrations! Birthday Celebrations at Beach Camp, Edmonds WA
Aquanauts, Snorkeling & Scuba Diving Aquanauts, Beach Camp at Sunset Bay
Ever wonder what it feels like to be able to breathe underwater? With aquanauts, we introduce campers to the underwater world! Imagine being able to talk and laugh underwater! A constant supply of air flows into the aquanaut helmet. Aquanauts, Beach Camp at Sunset Bay, Edmonds, WA
Puget Sound has one of the most ecologically diverse areas in the world. The Olympic Mountains astound and the views below the surface inspire. We snorkel the waters in front of Beach Camp. Snorkeling, Beach Camp at Sunset Bay
Instructors run snorkeling safaris exploring the Sound. Campers first learn how to fit and use their mask, snorkel, and fins before their adventure begins. During our overnight camp, kids experience night snorkeling and witness spectacular bioluminescence in the water! Life beneath the surface is magical. Campers explore and find purple sea stars, anemones, schools of fish and so much more. 1 of 17 Snorkeling Safari, Beach Camp at Sunset Bay, Edmonds, WA
Beach Camp s sister camp, Annie Crawley s Scuba Diving Camp at Sunset Bay, teaches scuba diving in dry suits. Scuba Diving Camp supplies top-of-theline equipment and specializes in kids and families with one to one instruction. Gabe, 12 years old, Annie Crawley s Scuba Diving Camp at Sunset Bay, WA

Scuba Diving Camp at Sunset Bay positions campers for a lifetime of adventure and personal growth through discovery of the undersea environment. 44 Tubing, Boating, & Wakeboarding Tubing at Beach Camp, Edmonds, WA
Campers enjoy tubing, wake surfing, wakeboarding, fishing and more from our jet boats. Jet boats have no propellers for maximum excitement and safety on the water. For tubing, the riders decide how fast they want to go with thumbs up or down signals to our spotters and drivers. Nothing brings a smile to a camper s face like a great tube ride. Tubing at Beach Camp, Edmonds, WA 1 of 18
During our overnight camp, we do sunset cruises looking for marine mammals and other wildlife. Boating at Beach Camp, Edmonds, WA
Teaching our counselors-in-training (CITs) how to drive our jet boats instills responsibility. Boat Training at Beach Camp, Edmonds, WA
First time wakeboarding! Camper learns to jump the wake. Many of our campers return year after year. We teach both beginning and advanced wakeboarding skills. 1 of 15 Beach Camp provides many opportunities for personal growth. Experts in their fields, our counselors provide the ultimate camper experiences.
We have an indoor skate ramp on our pier. Our belaying system allows campers of all levels to learn to drop in safely. The balancing skills learned here transfer to many of our water sports activities. Skateboard Ramp at Beach Camp, Edmonds, WA
With belay harness secure, you position your board and go! Skateboard Ramp at Beach Camp, Edmonds, WA
Sea Kayaking Beach Camp, Edmonds, WA Sea Kayaking & Sailing
Sea Kayaking At Beach Camp, we love sea kayaking flotillas. Before launching, we first play a name game to learn the parts of the kayak. Then campers learn sea kayaking safety and the various kinds of paddle strokes. Campers learn to rely on their core muscles to stroke so their arms do not tire during our expeditions. Like all of our activities, we incorporate games into the instruction such as Simon Says, tug-of-war, switching boats, and relay races. We have fun learning to exit and reenter a capsized kayak, and how to empty the vessel of water. Every week is a new adventure and we have a great time using teamwork, as kayaking is more fun with a little help from our friends! We have a special boat ramp at Beach Camp to launch kayaks, row boats, and our Zodiacs. 1 of 21 Sea Kayaking Beach Camp, Edmonds, WA
When the wind comes up, we sail at Beach Camp. We have trainer boats with roller furling masts so kids can peel off just enough sail for the conditions. Kids learn to rig and transport the boats to encourage self-sufficiency. Sailing at Beach Camp at Sunset Bay, Edmonds, WA
Sailing requires a skill and understanding of both the boat and the wind. Kids learn to tack upwind as well as cruising crosswind and downwind. Sailing at Beach Camp at Sunset Bay, Edmonds, WA
Sailing Sailing is one of the most rewarding ocean sports we teach. It presents a great opportunity for goal setting, skill building and managing risk. It is a pastime that can be enjoyed for a lifetime, and enjoyed regardless of age, physical wherewithal or income. With dinghy sailing, sailors enjoy the challenge of using their own weight as ballast to keep the boat upright against the shifting forces of the wind. We consider sailing to be one of the fundamental Beach Camp life skills that is a right of passage for growing up in a coastal community. Beach camp has trainer boats as well as some of the fastest monohulled sailboats ever made. Knowing the basics of stability, movement of the boom, and emergency procedures, creates the level of confidence and safety needed for a fun and truly rewarding experience on the water. Our expedition trainers carry two to three campers. Sailing at Beach Camp at Sunset Bay, Edmonds, WA 1 of 12
Sailing at Beach Camp at Sunset Bay, Edmonds, WA
Rowing Row Boating Beach Camp, Edmonds, WA We make rowing fun with relay races and water tubes.
Campers caught a salmon! Fishing & Crabbing
Sustainability Dungeness crab and hatchery salmon are sustainable resources on Puget Sound. They support both commercial and recreational fisheries. Beach Camp fishing and crabbing opportunities vary from year to year depending upon regulations, runs and sea conditions. We instruct in fishing regulations, fish and crab life cycles, and how to identify the various species. We practice catch and release fishing except for hatchery runs and proven sustainability. Not all campers are interested in fishing, but those who are will have an opportunity to try their luck sometime during the week. Kids age 15 and over who wish to fish must bring a saltwater salmon fishing license to camp. We of course do not guarantee a catch, but we guarantee fun trying. In most years we see salmon runs right in front of our dock.
For our group bookings we can offer special seasonal surprises. This group of Japanese exchange students arrived during the Pacific Northwest crab season. Crabbing Beach Camp at Sunset Bay, WA

Save Our Shorelines Great Blue Heron Beach Camp, Edmonds, WA
About Save Our Shorelines Save our Shorelines was founded in 2000 with the help of noted environmentalist and beach hiker Harvey Manning, out of concern over increased non-water dependent uses of area shorelines. Save our Shorelines is dedicated to preservation and enhancement of Puget Sound beaches and marine life so they may be enjoyed by future generations. Save our Shorelines provides educational outreach programs for area students and feet on the sand shoreline monitoring and cleanup. Save Our Shorelines partners with Beach Camp at Sunset Bay to provide marine science educational opportunities at camp as well as at area schools. Save Our Shorelines promotes sustainable human powered shoreline uses based on the belief that long term shoreline protection can only be achieved through increased public interest and exposure to the shoreline environment. Save Our Shoreline s long term goal is the creation of a shoreline walking and bike path between Seattle and Everett, Washington, and turning back the clock on non-water dependent shoreline uses in the western Puget Sound. Beach Camp at Sunset Bay is proud to host the offices of the non-profit environmental organization Save Our Shorelines. Save Our Shorelines has ample opportunities for volunteers at its Sunset Bay offices, and accepts tax deductible contributions from local foundations and individuals who have an interest in promoting and expanding the Save Our Shorelines educational programs.
