Master Photographer and Expedition Leader Joshua Holko talks with StudioVox POSTED BY STUDIOVOX ON WED, JUL 29, Photographer Joshua Holko is a creative force to be reckoned with in the photography world. A fully accredited AIPP Master of Photography and member of the Australian Institute of Professional photographers, he was awarded the APPA 2014: Overall Winner Science, Environment & Nature Photographer of the Year for his extraordinary images capturing the entrance to Antarctic Sound in Antarctica, a wild female polar bear admiring her reflection, and pen
guins on the sea ice near the mouth of the Lemaire Channel in Antarctica. In 2012 he was honored with the Outdoor Photographer of the Year award in the Spirit of Adventure" category for his photograph Mountain climbers in Antarctica and in 2013, 2014 and 2015 he was elected to the Victorian Council of the Australian Institute of Photographers.
Born in Melbourne, Australia, Holko is a full-time Professional landscape, nature and wilderness photographer. A passionate photographer, teacher and wilderness photographer he runs workshops and expeditions for other photographers and travelers to some of the world s wildest and most remote regions.
Specializing in the polar and sub-polar regions of the globe, his work celebrates the extreme latitudes of the polar environment. An ambassador for the Polar Regions he gave up the corporate world to pursuit his true passion for photography. You re welcome to join him on a photographic trip of a lifetime to some of the most magical destinations on this planet.
Generous in spirit he has a fantastic blog where he shares his experiences about his expeditions and gives priceless photography tips. StudioVox had the opportunity to talk with Holko about his incredible work: SV: Did you always know you'd become photographer, were you born holding a camera? JH: I have long been interested in photography and my first memories are of travelling around Australia with my dad carrying the tripod when I was just a kid on the weekends. It was enough to get me hooked and I have more or less pursued a passion for photography since then. I also studied photography as Fine Art and also in photojournalism as post graduate studies. I grew up shooting transparency film and learned to get the exposure right in camera - so thats something I still try and do today in digital.
SV: You could take pictures of anything, why nature photography? JH: I've always had a love of the outdoors and nature and it seemed only natural to combine this with photography. In my teens I did quite a lot of rock climbing photography and then moved more into Nature early in my twenties. Nowadays I specialize in Polar and sub polar photography, so I spend 6-7 months of the year in Antarctica and the Arctic. I also spend a lot of time in Iceland, Greenland, New Zealand and other similarly wonderful areas.
SV: What's your creative process behind your shots? JH: The creative process is difficult to pin down as each situation is different. In essence though I am looking for three things in my photography - Great Subject, Great light and Great Composition. I tend to seek out dramatic weather and avoid sunny days and blue sky. I like the drama of inclement weather and capturing the feeling, motion, movement and emotion of these situations is a key component in my creative process. I am very much an in camera photographer and do not subscribe to retouching that materially affects the authenticity of the image, so patience and the ability to return to a place again and again is also a key component of getting the right conditions.
SV: How did running workshops and expeditions for other photographers and travelers happen? JH:This is a really interesting question for me as running workshops and expeditions is not something I originally set out to do in my photography. I did a lot of travel to some very remote places early on in my career and met a lot of other travellers and photographers during my photographic adventures. People would always ask me where I had been and where I had photographed and as a result I just started talking about the places I had been, the experiences I had there, showing images and talking about where I was going to next. Before I knew it I was getting requests from other photographers to come with me and before I knew what was happening I was leading workshops and expeditions.
SV: Any risky situations you've been in while shooting? JH: Managing risk is a large part of what I do nowadays as a leader of photography workshops and expeditions. Especially given many of the places I travel to are very remote and can be quite removed from help if something were to go wrong. I can't say I have had any really dangerous situations on a workshop or expedition and would never put participants in a situation where they might be exposed to unnecessary risk. I still do a lot of shooting on my own however and have had a couple of close calls over the years. I had a glacier throw down a number of basketball sized rocks that landed just in front of me in New Zealand a few years ago and that was a pretty scary moment. I have also been charged by a Polar Bear which was enough to get my heart started and although the situation was never really dangerous, it was certainly exciting.
SV: Do you have a dream destination to shoot and do you have any upcoming locations your planning on for this year? JH: I have always wanted to go to Kamchatka in Russia and photograph the valley of the Geysers, as well as the Stella Sea Eagles at Kuril Lake. This is a long term project I am currently working on and I hope to undertake a scouting trip there in the next twenty four months. Its a very difficult area to reach and stay in with some rather arduous and expensive logistics. But I am working on it! I have a number of upcoming trips I am looking forward to - I will head off the day after next for an expedition to Svalbard to photograph Polar Bears and will then go directly to Iceland for a workshop in the Highlands. Then its back to Svalbard for another Polar Bear expedition before returning home for a few weeks. I will then lead a couple of expeditions to South Georgia Island and Antarctica for the rest of the year. In 2016 I have expeditions and workshops to Iceland in Summer and Winter, Lofoten in Winter, Svalbard for Polar Bears, Antarctica for Emperor Penguins and more. Its going to be really full year. There are details on all of these on my website.
SV: What advice do you have for the aspiring nature photographer? JH: Pursue the subject you are most passionate about. When we're passionate is when we do our best work so I am firm believer in photographing those things that you most wish to shoot. Get out into the field as often as you can and worry more about composition and light than about equipment. Its important to free up the creative brain to create and not get bogged down trying to be a camera technician. The camera you know intimately and can operate in the dark is going to free you up to get much better photographs than the one you just purchased and are still learning how to drive. You can see more of his work on his website and on StudioVox. Are you a photographer, artist, filmmaker or designer who'd like to have your work or creative talent featured on StudioVox?
