The sessions are listed below: August 5 10, 2012 Adults with Physical Disabilities August 12 17, 2012 Adults with Developmental Disabilities There is not a TBI specific Camp and there is no funding available to attend Easter Seal Camp this summer through the Tennessee Department of Health / Traumatic Brain Injury Program. 2 BRAIN INJURY ASSOCIATION OF TENNESSEE The Brain Injury Association of Tennessee, along with the Tennessee Traumatic Brain Injury Program, and Disability Law and Advocacy Center of Tennessee held the Conference: Beyond Surviving: Thriving After Brain Injury on Wednesday, March 7, This Conference was held at Montgomery Bell State Park in Burns, Tennessee at the Inn and Conference Center. The Keynote speaker was Dr. Catherine Stallworth, who has been recognized by the Commission for the Accreditation of Rehabilitation Facilities (CARF) as a visionary Medical Director. The triathlete, Saul Raisin, also spoke. He suffered a brain injury in a professional bicycle race in France and started the Raisin Hope Foundation to help others with brain injuries. Other topics included: New Breakthroughs in Vision Rehabilitation, Disaster Preparedness, The Importance of Telling Your Story, and Successful College Transition. There were also exhibits from vendors across Tennessee with information on services for individuals with brain injuries and their family members. The Brain Injury Association of Tennessee will receive funds from the sale of the brain injury awareness specialty license plates that has been approved by legislation. As a result of Senate Bill 2755 and House Bill 2691, the funds from the sale of these specialty license plates will be used for individuals with brain injuries in Tennessee to attend camp. Although this legislation is effective July 1, 2012, a minimum of 1,000 of these specialty license plates must be sold. There is an additional $35.00 to purchase this specialty license plate which can be renewed annually. It is estimated that the Brain Injury Association of Tennessee will receive approximately sixteen thousand dollars from the sale of the specialty license plates to help send individuals with traumatic brain injuries to camp. If you are interested in signing up for this specialty license plate, a sign up list will be available at the next Knoxville Area Brain Injury Support Group meeting. The Brain Injury Association of Tennessee is planning a Walk for Thought in 2013 to be held in different locations across Tennessee. While raising funds for the Brain Injury Association of Tennessee, this event will also increase awareness. Host applications are now being accepted from non-profit organizations serving individuals with brain injuries. By hosting a walk site, the host organization will receive 25 % of the funds raised at their site. Responsibilities of the host organization include obtaining a location for the event to be held and recruiting volunteers and participants for the event. The date can be anytime during the months of March and April If interested, contact Pam Bryan at (615) prior to the deadline of July 27, The Host organizations will be provided with a Guide to assist them in planning a Walk for Thought in their area. 3 SUMMER SAFETY The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) offers the following information on their website under Summertime Safety. Swimming is the third most popular recreational activity in the United States and the most popular recreational activity for children. There are numerous benefits from swimming, but it is also important to learn how to protect yourself from potential dangers. Learn to swim and also learn CPR. Always supervise young children around water. Stay close enough to reach a child at all times. Avoid distractions such as reading a book or talking on the phone. Swim with a buddy and swim where there is a Lifeguard. Make sure to respect pool rules such as No Running. Pool rules are there to protect you. Do not try to keep up with stronger or more experienced swimmers, especially if they swim out further than you think that you can swim back. Always use lifejackets and secure personal floatation devices do not substitute airfilled or foam toys for safety gear. Make sure you know how deep the water is before diving. Water skiers need to be good swimmers and always wear a life jacket that fits properly. Safe water skiing requires three people: the skier, an experienced boat driver, and a spotter to watch for the skier s signals. Since the noise from the boat is so loud, it is important that everyone agrees on and understands the hand signals to use before getting in the water. Be sure you are in a safe area to ski. Do not ski near docks, boats, rocks, or in shallow water. If you start to lose your balance while skiing, just bend your knees to avoid falling. If you fall remember to let go of the rope. Then hold your ski up to signal that you are okay and to let other boaters know that you are in the water. Be aware of the weather conditions. If you see dark clouds or hear thunder get out of the water and go inside. If you would like additional information on summer safety tips, you can go to the website for the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, which is located at : TBI UP-DATE 3
