2 An overview of some of the key national, state and local skills development programs and resources currently available for Tourism and Hospitality businesses. Workforce Planning Guide for the Tourism & Hospitality Industry Service Skills Australia Tourism, Travel and Hospitality Environmental Scan Australian Apprenticeships The guide provides practical advice on workforce planning and development and leads you through six steps and associated questions to help you build the foundation of a workforce development plan. 1. Define and profile your business 2. Identify where you want your business to be 3. Create your Workforce Development Plan 4. Develop your Action Plan 5. Implement your Workforce Development Plan 6. Review and revise your Workforce Development Plan The guide has a dedicated website, where you can find a range of easyto-use resources and templates. The Environmental Scan provides intelligence on the latest industry trends affecting labour and skills requirements in the service industries. It also includes information on how training is being developed to ensure that people are equipped with the skills to work in the tourism and hospitality industry effectively, The Scan is developed in partnership with industry and can be downloaded for free. Australian Apprenticeships encompass all apprenticeships and traineeships. They can be full-time, part-time or school-based. Australian Apprenticeships combine training and employment and upon completion lead to a nationally recognised qualification. Australian Apprenticeships are available to anyone of working age and do not require any entry qualifications. Australian Apprentices are available to school-leavers, those re-entering the workforce or those wishing to change careers. The Australian Government supports Australian Apprenticeships through a number of programs including: Australian Apprenticeships Incentives Programme Trade Support Loans Australian Apprenticeships Ambassadors
3 Australian Government Single Business Service Queensland Government Business and Industry Portal Australian Government Digital Business The Single Business Service enables businesses of all sizes to find information, services and links to government programs. This includes insights into business improvement strategies and essential information on planning, starting and running a business, as well as referrals to assistance programs. Business-Service.aspx A comprehensive online resource on matters relating to employing, managing and developing staff. The portal is also provides information on free webinars for businesses. The portal includes advice and information in the following areas: Starting a business (topics include: before you start; options; licensing; planning; legals; research; premises; suppliers) Growing a business (topics: Ways to grow; rapid growth; mentoring; trend analysis; tips for improving your business; innovation; research and development; new product development; new customers; exporting) Employing people (topics: taking on staff; employee rights; payroll tax; managing staff; developing staff; ending employment) Running a business (topics: money; sales; marketing; service; design; technology; tendering; risk; recovery; environment) Support, tools, grants, services Exiting a business (topics: ways to exit; closing; selling; valuing; succession planning) Want to get your business online, but don t know where to start? Need some help with your transition to e-commerce? Or do you just want practical advice about the internet and what it means for your organisation? 4 Tourism e-kit An effective digital marketing strategy is one of the most effective aspects of any tourism business. Digital marketing activities include developing and maintaining a website, e-marketing initiatives, social media and online bookings and distribution. The Tourism e-kit, produced by the Australian Tourism Data Warehouse, comprises a series of free online tutorials to assist timepoor tourism operators improve their online presence. The e-kit provides a comprehensive online marketing program designed to enable tourism operators to immediately apply online marketing concepts to their business. The tutorials also provide information on how to evaluate your current distribution channels, what online distribution is all about and advice on cost and equipment required. Entrepreneurs' Infrastructure Programme The Entrepreneurs Infrastructure Programme offers easy access to practical support to Australian businesses in a simplified and streamlined way. With a national network of more than 100 experienced private sector Advisers, the Entrepreneurs Infrastructure Programme offers support to businesses through three elements: Business Management; Research Connections; and Commercialising Ideas. Practical support for businesses includes: Advice from people with relevant private sector experience; Co-funded grants to commercialise new products, processes and services; Connection and collaboration opportunities. Services are flexible, tailored and focused on advice and support. Some services can be accessed by all Australian businesses. Eligibility criteria apply for more targeted assistance and grants.
5 Tourism and Events Queensland How To Guides Tourism and Events Queensland offers a variety of industry guides, fact sheets and resources to assist tourist and events businesses, including advice on: Going digital Planning for inbound success Becoming China Ready Organising events and festivals Obtaining a grant Industry Skills Fund Growth Stream The industry Skills Fund (Growth Stream) assists industry to invest in training and support services and to develop innovative training solutions. The fund prioritises SMEs, including micro businesses. Help is available in the following categories: Skills Advice help identifying skills opportunities and maximising training outcomes. Grant co-investment for businesses to improve the skills of their workforce for an identified growth opportunity. Fund/Pages/default.aspx Industry Skills Fund Youth Stream The Industry Skills Fund (Youth Stream) includes two pilot programs to address youth unemployment by supporting businesses to employ more young people: for Employment Scholarships if your business has fewer than 200 employees and you hire an unemployed person aged 18 to 24 years, you may be eligible for funding of up to $7,500 for the cost of up to 26 weeks of job specific training. Youth Employment Pathways Supports community organisations assist disengaged young people, aged 15 to 18 years to get back into school, start vocational training or move into work. The two pilot programs are available until 29 February 2016 in selected regional areas and areas of high youth unemployment.
6 Government of Western Australia Small Business Development Corporation SkillsOnline NSW Government Small Business Tool kit Queensland Tourism Industry Council Staff Management Tool Kit The Government of Western Australia s Small Business Development Corporation provides free expert advice on a wide range of business topics, including: Business planning Writing a marketing strategy Guidance for staff recruitment Planning and structure SkillsOnline offers free vocational education and training resources that have been developed with industry experts and other stakeholders to meet the Australian Quality Framework requirements, industry and local needs. The SkillsOnline service does not conduct any training courses ne/index.html The Small Business Tool Kit enables you to: Find the information and interactive tools you need to start, run and grow your business. Register for free to create a profile, build business planning documents and track your progress. - start a business, run your business, grow your business, business planning, marketing and sales, management This toolkit contains online resources to step you through the process of staff management from recruitment to building skills. It includes the 7 steps to better manage staff.
7 Tourism Employment Plans Tourism Employment Plans (TEPs) are locally-led plans to solve a region s labour and skills issues. For businesses, they provide solutions to attract and keep workers, as well as new ideas and tools to undertake effective workforce planning. The Australian Trade Commission (Austrade) has produced a guide to developing a TEP, following five essential steps: 1. Define and profile the region 2. Identify the region s labour and skills issues 3. Select appropriate solutions for the region 4. Allocate roles, responsibilities and timelines for delivery 5. Implement, communicate, measure, revise strategy/working-groups/labour-and-skills/tourism-employment- Plans/Develop-your-own Tourism Excellence Tourism Excellence is a training program with 7 modules, designed to help tourism businesses and destinations get the best from their workforce, deliver the best possible visitor experience, grow tourism by working together, and ensure a sustainable industry. Excellence achieve your business objective how to get and keep your customers. Growing destinations highlighting the complimentary nature of products and services within a destination. Fostering Innovation the adoption of innovative practices.
