18 Leadership of Mrs. Helen Samaha Nuwayhid 2014: Helen s leadership can be seen through the formerly illustrated areas of her professional journey as nurse, whether in practice, education, and research. The highlight of her leadership in nursing is when she was elected as the President of the Order of Nurses (ONL) in Lebanon (by acclamation) June 2012-June Within her role as the President of the ONL, Helen is positioning nursing in Lebanon as a vital unique discipline at the national, regional, and global levels; having the voice of nurses heard, and making nursing visible and viable to the young; rewarding and publicizing success stories; and affirming the unique professional and economic value of nurses in traditional and innovative roles. Other areas that Helen is currently focusing on during her tenure as the President of the ONL involve addressing workplace violence in relation to nursing and enhancing the working condition for Lebanese nurses. At the policy level Helen is building powerful partnerships within nursing and with other stakeholders e.g. policy-makers and media etc, and to close the loops in the knowledgeservice-policy cycle. Helen launched a massive campaign over the past six months to realign all delinquent constituencies, reinstated all legal terms required for practicing professional nurses, officially raised the number of registered nurses from 6ooo to 11, 620 nurses and doubled the revenues of the ONL for the first time since its inception. To ensure retired nurses their rights, a law was passed and signed by the president of the country, earmarking a monumental achievement after repeated failures to pass this law for the past five years. To upgrade educational standards and bridge the gaps between technical and academic education, and between academia and practice a national collaborative Learn-Serve- Teach- Improve is launched. This initiative will shift the paradigm in accreditation programs in under-privileged areas and for underprepared faculty and students as all the previous adopted measures to instate accreditation programs in the country were not palpable and merely punitive in nature. Helen is a unique nursing leader that is transforming nursing in Lebanon despite of all the political and economic insecurity, nursing shortage, and the uncertainty dominating everyday life. With all what is mentioned above, it is Helen s humanism and caring for the fellow human, makes her a unique a remarkable NURSE deserving to be the recipient of the UMSON Visionary Pioneer Award. 18
