Case 4) Moritz Diesner, BUILDTOG A European Passive house project, BASF BuildTog (Building Together) is a European Passive House project driven by four partners who are engaged in sustainable construction: The European housing companies network EURHONET, the French architect Nicolas Michelin (A/NM/A), the German energy consultancy LUWOGE consult and the worldwide leading
chemical company BASF. The target of BuildTog is to develop a generation of Passive Houses that are in the same time energy and economy efficient and also architectural ambitious. In this sense it is a very practice oriented research project. BuildTog houses will be constructed in Passive House standard. They are very efficient and fulfill the EU energy saving targets which will influence the standard of all new buildings in the future Case 4) Simone Kreutzer, Swedish passive house expert, passivehouse center Realization of passive houses in Sweden. Exemplary projects: Passive house tennis center Södra Climate Arena in Växjö, passive house kindergartens and schools, e.g. Skogslunden in Åkersberga and a school in Knivsta Prof. Dr. Wolfgang Feist, passive-house institute Darmstadt, Leopold- Franzens-University of Innsbruck Energy and ecology (ecological sustainability) Case 5) Maria Baldin, head of department Communications & Sustainability, Siemens Sweden Sustainability generates business. Content: Megatrends, such as demographic change, urbanization, climate change and globalization, are affecting and defining lives and economies throughout the world. These forces are shaping our business by creating new markets and opening up valuable new opportunities. Yet they also harbor significant risks that need careful management. Only a value-based, sustainability-driven company committed to living its principles can minimize these risks and master these
challenges to optimally leverage emerging opportunities for its stakeholders. Siemens makes the three areas of sustainable development environment, business and society the cornerstones of all their activities. There are convinced that sustainability generates business Panel discussion: - Joachim Granit, Stockholm on the move - Uli Hellweg, IBA Hamburg - Maria Baldin, Siemens Sweden - Krister Lindstedt, White Arkitekter - Ingmarie Ahlberg, head of environment at the development administration for the city of Stockholms, representative of the project Norra Djurgårdsstaden Pontus Herin: Summary of the day
DAY 2 (April 2 nd, 2014) Only if it s profitable - Real Estate Development and Sustainable Funding. Moderator: Sören Andersson, sustainability advisor Sören Andersson: Introduction to the day s overall topic Anna Denell, head of sustainability, Vasakronan Sustainable - only if it s profitable; or profitable only if it s sustainable? Content: Vasakronan is Sweden s largest property company, owned by four stately controlled pension funds, and known in Sweden as one of the frontrunners in the field of sustainability at the Swedish property market. Anna will tell the story of how sustainability and environmental concerns have gone from maybe nice to have to fundamental for the company s profitability Case1.1) Dipl.-Ing. Petra Bühner, sustainability advisor, KfW bank (kommunal- and private credit institution) KfW and the promotion of residential buildings Energyefficient construction and refurbishment Case 1.2) Sven Ljung, Byggnads How can the German experiences be of use for Sweden in terms of issues of financing necessary improvements in energy efficiency among residential buildings? Content: Sweden s great challenge is to reach the environmental goals set by the EU and the Swedish Parliament residential buildings are in need of an energy efficiency improvement every year. Byggnads released a report about these challenges and how Sweden can make use of German experiences based on the KfW program.
Coffee and mingle Case 2.1) Cord Soehlke, head of construction of the city of Tübingen City construction with private building cooperatives - Tübingen s strategy for inner development. Content: For almost 20 years, the city of Tübingen rebuilds former military and industrial houses and creates socially and ethnically diverse living quarters. Besides the city itself, the main actors on this market are privately owned construction cooperatives: They aim at creating social diversity, are low in costs and combine architectural requirements with aesthetics, as well as the inhabitants diversity. Based on the city of Tübingen s and Freiburg s experiences, it can be claimed that building cooperatives become more and more important in the city development in Germany. This trend can be seen as a major factor that makes building in the city-centers affordable, yet innovative, sustainable and compatible with the city structure. Exemplary projects: French quarter, Loretto-Areal, mill quarter Mühlenviertel, the old weaving mill alte Weberei, Alexanderpark Case 2.2) Staffan Schartner, omniplan and association for Byggemenskaper Who should build Sweden and what can we learn from Germany? Content: As in many other areas, Sweden has gone further than most other countries in restructuring the construction sector. For almost 50 years, the construction industry with its roots in infrastructure projects, has dominated the housing sector in
Sweden, giving ever less space for other interests. We now have a situation with far too few dwellings built in the growth areas, very high construction costs, more than reasonable margins for the investing part of the industry and a massive critique on the quality, diversity and architecture of the new buildings. The government seems to be determined to go further on this path, focusing on further industrializing the already industrialized housing sector. Where can we find an alternative to the large scale and very limited group of investors? Who will have to change what to make space for others? Exemplary projects: Tübingen s way of handling its development (old weaving mill, French quarter), coming projects in Göteborg, in Gråberget and in Högsbo, LinköpingsBo 2016 / Vallastaden, Casablanca (also Linköping), Karlskrona Seniorhusförening, Understenshöjden (Stockholm) and Urbana Villor (Malmö) Case 3) Marek Czyborra, architectural office Kaden Klingbeil, Berlin Wood as a resource for urban Development. Realization of taller buildings with wood as the primary building material Lunch and Mingle Case 4) Thomas Patzak, director sales Europe, ebm-papst Innovation and sustainability as a company philosophy. Content: Introduction ebm-papst, Greentech as a company concept, Innovation is the key, Regulations are driving Europe, Greentech saves money and environment Exemplary projects: Hollenbach Factory : Energy saving products out of energy efficient factory
Case 5) Kristoffer Lüthi, vice MD of Ekobanken Sustainable building needs sustainable financing. Content: Ekobanken is a transparent bank which openly reports all lending to companies. As a matter of fact the borrowing companies are being presented and those keeping the money on the bank know what it is used for. The administrated money is lent to companies which aim at fulfilling sustainable and long-term values. This includes projects of sustainable building and renewable energies. Exemplary projects: For 15 years, Ekobanken has been financing different kinds of sustainable building projects, amongst others preschools, schools, collective housings, eco-villages, row houses and apartment blocks which will be discussed during the presentation Panel discussion: Construction costs for houses under SEK/ m²? is this realistic and profitable? - Sven Ljung, Byggnads - Staffan Schartner, Föreningen Byggemenskaper - Thomas Patzak, ebm-papst - Kristoffer Lüthi, Ekobanken Sören Andersson: Summary of the day
DAY 3 (April 3 rd, 2014) Architecture and Research: Future Urban Planning and Construction. Moderator: Dan Hallemar, editor-in-chief Arkitektur Dan Hallemar, moderator: Introduction to the day s overall topic Key note speaker: Prof. Dr.-Ing. Dr. h.c. Gerhard Hausladen, German Content: architect and the winner of the architectural award 2013 in Bavaria Integral planning and building what is the current status quo? - strategies of integral planning to benefit energy efficient and sustainable building - Exergie strategies for the ideal use of energies with different valences - buildings as users and potential energy-storages in a line with their integration into existing grids via regenerative energy production by solar and wind energy - municipal energy management Exemplary projects: - municipal energy management of Bavarian municipalities - chair of higher education Ordinariat Munich, Kapellenstraße - office building of Hausladen GmbH engineering Case 1) Stellan Fryxell, Tengbom Rethink Cities. Content: Today, over half of the world s population lives in cities covering roughly 3% of the earth s land area but using 75% of all energy and emitting 80% of all carbon dioxide. Infrastructure investments in many western countries and
cities are not at a desirable level compared to GDP or steered in the wrong direction while many cities are growing faster geographically than population-wise. The world s energy supply is still more than 80% dependent on fossil fuels, energy usage overall increases and 95% of the energy usage in the transport sector is produced by fossil fuel-powered vehicles. Society has to rethink cities through strengthened resource efficiency in cities. The focus has to be on planning and creating social and economically attractive areas, wellfunctioning spatial structures and energy efficient systems. In an architectural report Rethink Cities an urban toolbox approach is developed, which embraces the optimization and integration of systems for energy production, water usage and sewage, waste recycling, building and city structures, resource efficient mobility and accessibility, social inclusiveness and more. Exemplary projects: Hammarby Sjöstad (Stockholm), Wuxi Sino- Swedish EcoCity (Wuxi, China), The International Federation of Consulting Engineers (FIDIC s) and The Swedish Federation of Consulting Engineers and Architects report Rethink Cities Coffee and mingle Case 2) Prof. Dr. sc. tech. Michael Schlaich, Technical University of Berlin Case 3) Marja Lundgren, architect, White Arkitekter How to handle future challenges? Content: White is preparing for the future a presentation of Whites knowledge strategy, research and development program,
improvement of the specialist knowledge based on their knowledge-network, finance and research strategies close to practical experiences. The presentation will be supported by the research coordinator Elise Grosse Case 4) Prof. AA Dipl. (hons) Achim Menges, University of Stuttgart, Institute for Computational Design (ICD) Enhanced material performance through design computation and digital fabrication. Content: The presentation will introduce the possibility of enhancing material performance and resource efficiency through design computation and digital fabrication in architecture. Along a series of research projects and exemplary buildings it will be investigated how new integrative technologies of design software and production hardware allow rediscovering and rethinking material performance. This is directly related to sustainable architecture. Exemplary projects: Research projects of the ICD, University of Stuttgart, Germany Lunch break and mingle Case 5) Prof. Dr.-Ing. Jan Knippers, architectural and engineering office Knippers&Helbig From nature to fabrication: Biomimetic design-principles for lightweight structures. Content: Natural structures are multilayered, finely tuned and differentiated combinations of a few basic components and feature multiple functions. Their design principles have so far virtually not been used architecturally. The question is whether computational design and fabrication offers new means to
transfer the morphological form and function principles of nature to building construction. This might lead to functionally and ecologically efficient structures far beyond existing typologies of building construction. Exemplary projects: EXPO Boulevard, EXPO 2010, Shanghai, China. Thematic Pavilion, EXPO 2012, Yeosu, South Korea Bao An International Airport, Shenzhen, China ICD/ITKE Research Pavilion 2012 and 2013, Stuttgart, Germany Case 5) Tobias Olsson, head of political architecture at Sveriges Arkitekter How to increase sustainable building. Content: The energy and climate requirements of a building have been discussed for long, focusing on the inner-house environment. Now it is time to widen the view and consider the outer environment how can architecture contribute to give back private and urban space? The creation of ecosystem services (energy winning, cultivation, surface water, to name but a fiew) combined with the aim of minimizing unwanted effects on the city landscape (noise, insecurity and more) can be considered as an essential part of sustainable urban building Panel discussion: - Prof. Dr.-Ing. Dr. h.c. Gerhard Hausladen, key note speaker - Tobias Olsson, head of political architecture at Sveriges Arkitekter - Stellan Fryxell, Tengbom

Lena Lundberg, Head of Public Affairs Plastics, IKEM Membership information (15 Min) 2. Magnus Wallin, Business Director Nordic, Kingspan ( 10) Who wants to pay to make walls thinner? Who wants to pay to avoid making them thicker? Content: Magnus Wallin will explain the reasons of the building sector for not wanting to pay to making walls thinner and why they instead are more likely to pay for avoiding making them thicker. Exemplary projects: - Västermalmsstrand on Västra Kungsholmen in Stockholm: Skanska finishes three quarters of tenement houses that are built with low energy techniques. The paths and roofs are isolated with KingspanTherma, which saved 100 mm
of wall-material, to name just one benefit. - Low-cost youth accommodations from Denmark with prefab-walls, isolated with Kooltherm and a U-value of under 0,09W/m2K 3. Ronny Andersson, Cementa (10) Case 2) Anna Wickman, Vice President Environmental Affairs, NCC (20) Challenges of sustainable construction material for the building industry. Content: How to define sustainable material? Which challenges does the building industry in Europe need to face in general and the Nordic countries in particular, when buying new construction material? Trend-check: Which are the main challenges that we assume will take place in the future? Case 3) Quentin de Hults, BASF How LCA (Life Cycle Assessment) and innovation contribute to sustainable construction. Content: The presentation will define sustainable construction and show how Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) is applied in construction.
