26 Skanska Residential Sustainability Strategy Climate Change Natural Resource Use Our Environment People & Places Our homes will cost you 25% less to heat and run than the average new home. That s hundreds of pounds a year saved. Our homes will also include features such as cycle storage, home offices and recycling facilities to help you live the sustainable lifestyle you want to. We will start to build homes that use even less energy, including some that will be zero carbon or actually produce more energy than they use! In 2014, most of our homes will use 25% less water than in 2011., saving you money and avoiding waste of a precious natural resource. By 2015, our homes will use almost half the energy of a new home built in 2011, saving thousands of tonnes of carbon and helping to reduce climate change. Homes All of the wood and bricks we use will be from sustainable sources - and will have a badge to prove it. We want our sites to be a haven for wildlife and will preserve and add to existing wildlife habitats. Our homes will start to include recycled materials, such as recycled plastic. Some of these materials are currently difficult to find, but we will be finding innovative ways to source them as we think this issue is so important. All of our homes will have access to outdoor spaces and community facilities, built to a high quality and incorporating features such as play areas and public art. 10% less waste will be generated in building our homes. That means less trips to a landfill site and less land taken up to store waste. You should be able to see the results of our hard work and in 2013, most of our sites should have 3 extra species of wildlife visiting or living there. Even more recycled materials will be used in our homes, in fact you will be able to see them from reconditioned bricks to carpets made from plastic bottles. We want all of our sites to be built on previously used land and to make the sites we develop better places for everyone to enjoy. Our homes will generate even less waste during their construction that s thousands of tonnes of waste diverted from landfill sites. By now, our sites will have well established and well used green spaces with even more wildlife than before we built our homes. We want our customers to be happy and will be measuring our performance against our competitors. We also want to be a good neighbour and will observe best practice standards during construction to ensure we are a considerate builder. As we start to sell our first homes, we will not accept less than 5* service and the highest levels of customer satisfaction in the industry. We want to find innovative ways to reduce our impact on local communities when we build homes, including new ways to reduce noise or dust and to engage local communities when we are on site. All of our homes will be near to public transport we will may even provide a bicycle or discounts on tickets to make it even easier for you to use What makes a Skanska Residential home sustainable? We want to build homes for people who know how to look after themselves, the environment and their community. We have therefore set ourselves more and more challenging targets for the next 5 years that we will strive to surpass so the home you buy will always be the most sustainable it can be. These targets mean we will build homes in places that will have a low impact on the environment and that we will create green spaces and encourage wildlife. We also want to build our homes efficiently using sustainable and recycled materials and in a way that produces less waste. Our sustainable homes will also make it easy for you to live a sustainable life style by using less Skanska energy and Residential water, or by UK making less car journeys by working from home, using your bicycle or public transport. We therefore want to get the whole package right by building the kind of life enhancing homes and communities that people will love living in.
