Areas of emphasis to include importance of animals to human societies, animals as markers of social status, and social movements for animal welfare/rights policies. Animals & Society Interdisciplinary, sophomore-level course dealing broadly with the relationships between humans and nonhuman animals. Topics include the interconnectedness of humans and animals throughout history; social construction of different animals as companions, food, tools, etc.; the evolution of animals roles and representations in human society; changing attitudes toward animals; and the impact of those attitudes on social structures and public policy. The Animal Question in Human Health Interdisciplinary, upper-level and graduate-level course exploring the relationships between the well-being of humans of the well-being of nonhuman animals at the societal level. Topics include consumption of and access to animal products, production methods, medical animal research, transgenesis, and the impact of the animal-rights movement on the aforementioned areas. Columbia, MO, November Choice in the Narratives of Women Without Children Comparison of the ways in which women without children use the language of choice to explain how they came to be without children. Emphasis is on how categories of childless women who are generally considered to be very different are actually quite similar in their understandings of themselves. Introduction to Sociology of Gender Discussion of different sociological approaches to gender, with a focus on how traditional gender stratification disadvantages both women and men. Feminism Introduction to feminism and discussion of different gender ideologies, emphasis on goals, accomplishments, and setbacks of different types of feminism. Bodily Misconduct Discussion of women who do not conform to societal norms of appropriate use of their bodies, in particular, being muscular and not having children. Focus is on how women understand themselves as feminine in face of societal messages to the contrary. Deviant Female Bodies Discussion of embodiment and meaning with a focus on the stigma of having an oversized female body. Emphasis on contradictory spaces occupied by female strength athletes. Women Without Children Discussion of how the conflation of motherhood with adult femininity makes it difficult for women who do not have children to assume adult roles in their extended families.
