1 Master of Nursing Science Stage 2 Overview The Master of Nursing Science is an academic program designed to provide opportunities for nurses to develop advanced skills in clinical inquiry, practice and leadership in professional nursing. The degree is offered in many clinical specialties and a generic program. To be eligible for entry into Stage 2, Master of Nursing Science candidates must have completed Stage 1, the Graduate Diploma in Nursing Science, or an equivalent degree, and have at least two years post registration nursing experience. Stage 1 of the Master of Nursing Science specialties are detailed in separate brochures. To complete the degree in a named specialty, the research dissertation must be conducted in the student s chosen specialty. Stage 2 of the Master of Nursing Science provides graduates with a rigorous grounding in research methods, critical analysis, clinical management and leadership and theoretical perspectives that inform nursing. Students select one of two options: (1) Research; (2) Coursework. Students will graduate with a sound knowledge of a broad range of research methodologies and methods; the ability to design and conduct a research project in a rigorous and ethical manner; the skills to critically evaluate research and make informed decisions for practice change when appropriate; the ability to work as an effective member of a research team; and be a critical and informed thinker regarding issues related to nursing and health. Teaching Methods The Master of Nursing Science is a program that utilises flexible delivery methods of teaching including distance learning packages in print form, electronic methods based around the Internet, and in particular, mixed mode approaches to teaching and supervision that incorporate face to face tutorials, workshops and didactic lectures, with on-line and discussion. Program Duration - Stage 2 Except with the permission of the Faculty, Stage 2 of the Master of Nursing Science shall be completed in a: > > minimum of two semesters, > > or maximum of six semesters The Master of Nursing Science must be completed within the six year time limit. Entry Requirements - Stage 2 An applicant for admission to the program of study for the Master of Nursing Science shall have completed Stage 1 Master of Nursing Science (or an equivalent Graduate Diploma in Nursing Science). Status, exemption and credit transfer No candidate shall be granted status for courses with a total value of more than 24 units on account of courses presented for any other award. 2 Options and Courses - Stage 2 In Stage 2 of the Master of Nursing Science, students have the option to undertake the program by research (Option 1) or coursework (Option 2). All courses are subject to availability. Core courses NURSING 7002HO Interpretive and Critical Research in Nursing Teaching period: Semester 1 with optional on-campus tutorials. This course will outline the interpretive and critical paradigms and focus on research design from this perspective. Topics will include the critique of positivism and an introduction to interpretive methodologies, such as grounded theory, ethnography and phenomenology and critical methodologies, such as feminist research and action research. Practical research activities such as literature searching, conducting interviews and coding qualitative data will also be provided.

3 NURSING 7021A - Research Part I* Contact hours: Negotiated with Supervisor This course requires the student to identify a question, conduct a literature review, identify a methodology and draft a proposal. *This course must be discussed with the Master of Nursing Science Program Coordinator prior to enrolment. NURSING 7021B - Research Part II* Contact hours: Negotiated with Supervisor This course requires the student to finalise their literature review and proposal and successfully gain ethical approval to conduct the research. *This course must be completed prior to undertaking 7020B Research DIssertation Part 2. NURSING 7021C - Research Part III* Contact hours: Negotiated with Supervisor This course requires the student to finalise their method/methodology chapters, complete data collection and commence data analysis. *This course must be completed prior to undertaking 7020B Research DIssertation Part 2. NURSING 7021D - Research Part IV* Contact hours: Negotiated with Supervisor This course requires the student to finalise their thesis and conduct a presentation evaluating their research and proposing future directions. *This course must be completed prior to undertaking 7020B Research DIssertation Part 2. NURSING 701HO Systematic Review Project Contact hours: 2 hours per week This course provides students with the opportunity to explore one aspect of their nursing practice through the conduct of a focussed systematic review. Conducting a systematic review of the literature assists in developing skills in preparing a reviewprotocol, undertaking a literature search, appraising research, summarising and synthesising the findings from independent studies. Elective courses NURSING 7011HO Leadership and Management in Nursing

4 This course will explore contemporary issues in relation to health management in clinical nursing practice. Topics will include: health service organisation, strategic planning, financial planning, human resource management and clinical leadership. NURSING 700HO International Issues in Nursing Service Delivery This course is designed to introduce students to a variety of topical issues related to the health care system and the nurses roles within it, both at a national and international level. Topics will include health and the environment, the epidemiology of disease, epidemiological tools, poverty, global conflict, the economics of health care, political awareness, leadership and spheres of nursing. NURSING 7012HO Systematic Review of the Research* This course is designed to enable students to understand why reviews of research are needed and their role in health care decision making, develop skills to critically evaluate different types of reviews in order to make informed decisions for changes in practice and develop skills in reviewing the research literature to enable them to undertake their own systematic review. *This course must be completed prior to undertaking Systematic Review Project if undertaking Option 2 NURSING 7015HO Applied Pharmacology in Nursing This course will build on nurses understanding of drug use, prescribing and administration. Discussion will include the South Australian and Australian legal requirements for the prescription and administration of drugs, ethical issues involved in the cost, prescription and clinical trials of drugs, and the process of collating a patient s medication history. Drugs will be discussed according to their classes of action. Students will learn how drugs are chosen for particular effects. The pharmacological principles of pharmacokinetics, pharmacodynamics, adverse effects, contraindications and precautions will be described using examples from different drug classes. The polypharmacy and the quality use of medicines will also be presented. While this course will not prepare students for a role as a prescriber, they will be taught the concepts of safe prescribing and administration. NURSING 7102EX Research Literacy Contact hours: 2 hours per week This course is designed to familiarise students with the methodologies used in health research. Students will learn about empirical methods such as experimental studies and also the fundamentals of interpretive and critical methodologies, such as phenomenology. The aim is for student to learn how to read and critically evaluate research relating to their practice.

5 NURSING 7124 Management of Chronic Illness Teaching period: Semester 1 Contact hours: Flexible Learning Mode The specific objective of this course is to enable students to: develop an aspect of care based on current research evidence: acquire literature searching and critical evaluation skills using systematic procedures; and further develop transferable management and communication skills. Students will cover the following topics: principles of management within the context of community/palliative care, diabetes, continence and medication management in relation to community care. NURSING 205HO Mental Health Teaching period: Semester 1 Contact hours: Flexible learning mode including online tutorials This course will examine the fundamentals of mental illness including the causal theories and the major groups of disorders such as depression and other mood disorders, anxiety disorders, psychosis, post-traumatic stress disorder and personality disorder The material will guide students to explore the range of, treatments (pharmacological, psychological, spiritual) and health care models (shared care, acute inpatient, outpatient, public health, community and recovery approaches) which are regarded as current best practice. The course will also examine mental health from the perspective of national, state and local government levels. NURSING 5109HO An Introduction to Evidence Based Health Care This course will examine the concept of evidence based practice. Topics will include the history of Evidence Based Health Care and constructing a question (topic identification). Students will develop skills in searching for evidence and determining the quality of evidence using critical appraisal of literature. Study Plan Students must follow the study plan to guide enrolment for the duration of the program. Any deviations from the study plan must be discussed with the Specialty Coordinator.
