There is a designated distance librarian to support distance students and our new simulation suites provide state-of-the-art equipment for health professionals skills and practice development. All Whitireia postgraduate programmes have been recognised and approved by the New Zealand Qualifications Authority and the Ministry of Education. Many of our postgraduate courses are accredited by the Nursing Council of New Zealand and are eligible for Health Workforce New Zealand (HWNZ) funding. Programme Delivery Postgraduate programmes are delivered flexibly and range from fully online courses to courses with tutorial blocks with online support. Some programmes are offered outside of the Wellington region. Whitireia uses Moodle as the online learning management system. This qualification is designed for professionals in health and social practice seeking to advance their careers. Graduates will have built on their professional experience to gain internationally recognised knowledge and skills for career enhancement, capable to lead practice at an advanced, specialised level. 5 Postgraduate Certificate in Nursing This clinically focused programme consists of three strands: Mental Health and Addiction Nursing Nursing Change of Scope of Practice This clinically focused programme builds on your existing knowledge and experience as a nurse, while providing an environment that ensures the supported acquisition of knowledge and skills. of Health funded mental health service for a minimum of 0.7 FTE per week. The programme identifies and incorporates, in partnership with health care providers, the specific skills and competencies that need to be developed in relation to new entry to specialist practice (mental health and addiction nursing). On successful completion you will be competent and able to critically incorporate best practice standards and research into mental health and addiction nursing. Change of Scope of Practice Strand If you are a registered general or psychopeadic nurse wanting to change your scope of practice to include mental health you can apply to complete this programme. You will need approval from the Nursing Council of New Zealand and be employed a minimum of 0.7FTE per week. Students are employees of health providers and will attend theory blocks and/or tutorials at the Whitireia Porirua campus, or in their workplace environments. All strands require you to attend theory blocks and/or tutorials at the polytechnic or in your workplace environment. Postgraduate Certificate In nursing Nursing Strand This clinically focused programme is for nurses working in any clinical setting, including medical and aged care. You will build on your existing knowledge and experience and focus on assessment, clinical judgement and utilising evidence in the context of your own practice environment. Mental Health and Addiction Strand The Mental Health one year entry to practice programme is offered to registered nurses in their first year of practice in mental health and addiction settings. Te Pou funding is available for nurses employed in a Ministry Nursing Strand HSC8301: Professional Nursing Praxis (60 credits) HSC8305: Advancing Clinical Practice (60 credits) Mental Health or Change of Scope Strand HSC8316: Contemporary Mental Health & Addiction Nursing (60 credits) HSC8326: Professional Practice in Mental Health and Addiction Nursing (60 credits)
6 Postgraduate Certificate in Hospice Palliative Care This clinically focused programme is for registered health professionals involved in the delivery of palliative care including hospices, aged and residential care, community and primary health care and hospital settings. You will explore the theory, research and practice issues necessary to provide quality palliative care in contemporary health care environments. The two courses in this programme are delivered online with tutorial blocks being held at our Porirua campus. Postgraduate Certificate In Hospice Palliative Care HSC8201: The Foundation of Palliative Care (45 credits) HSC8202: Praxis in Palliative Care (45 credits) Applicants need to be employed in relevant clinical work for a minimum of two days a week and may be eligible for Health Workforce New Zealand (HWNZ) funding available through District Health Board HWNZ Co-ordinators. The patient, family and whanau are the focus. The practice of palliative care including therapeutic interventions and treatment modalities; loss, grief and bereavement support across the lifespan; cultural attitudes to death and dying; resilience and caring for self and others are explored.
7 Postgraduate Certificate in Perioperative Specialty Nursing This clinically focused programme is for registered health professionals providing care for people undergoing interventions in surgical or acute medical settings e.g. surgery and investigative radiology. The programme aims to support health professionals to advance their perioperative practice in assessment, management and service delivery characterised by high quality, evidence based nursing care, for patients and their families. The integration of theory and practice advances clinical judgement, critical thinking, and clinical leadership in a challenging and supportive learning environment. Postgraduate Certificate In PERIOPERATIVE SPECIALTY Care HSC8401: The Foundation of Specialty Nursing (45 credits) HSC8402: Praxis in Perioperative Specialty Nursing (45 credits) The two courses in this programme are offered in Wellington and Christchurch in partnership with Medtra New Zealand Limited. Applicants must be employed in relevant clinical work a minimum of two days per week.
8 Postgraduate Certificate in Primary Health Care Specialty Nursing This clinically focused programme is for registered nurses working in primary health care and community settings, including aged care for a minimum of two days per week. You will enhance your practice and gain further knowledge and skills that reflect your specialty practice area. The programme consists of two papers: Primary Health Care and Health Promotion, and Praxis in the Community Setting (you choose one of the three strands). Taught tutorial days are supported by online learning, with tutorial blocks being delivered in Porirua and Auckland (Well Child/Tamariki Ora strand only). 9 Postgraduate Certificate in Specialty Care Postgraduate Diploma in Specialty Care POstgraduate certificate in specialty care This clinically focused programme is offered to registered health professionals working in specialty practice for a minimum of 22.5 hours per week. This two paper qualification can be completed over two years and offers a range of papers which allows for a programme of study that best meets your needs and reflects current and developing research-based practice in relation to health care delivery. Courses are 17 weeks in duration and are a combination of online learning and short tutorial blocks delivered at our Porirua campus. Please note not all papers are offered each year. POstgraduate DIPLOMA in specialty care For registered health professionals wanting to extend their knowledge and advance in their professional practice. There is one endorsement, Pacific Health and Nursing, for experienced Pacific Nurses working in New Zealand. Graduates may gain credit towards Master s studies. Simulation Workshops We offer one day workshops, at the Whitireia Porirua campus, where you can sharpen your assessment skills using our high fidelity simulation suites. The workshops provide professional development hours to meet continuing education requirements for health professionals.
