3 OVERVIEW of The Master of Public Health Coursework program The ANU Master of Public Health will equip students with the foundations of public health practice, provide them with an understanding of contemporary public health issues relevant to Australia and teach them practical techniques for analysing public health problems. The program will provide experience in public health through core courses designed to give students the skills they need and electives that suit students personal interests in public health. Workplace related learning can be readily incorporated for students who work in suitable jobs. Coursework & Research program The Master of Public Health (Research) program provides students with the opportunity to extend their practical, coursework experience in public health with the development and implementation of a research project. It is particularly relevant for students who wish to benefit from the strengths in research at ANU and its ready access to the local and national health administration and policy scenes. The Master of Public Health (Research) is designed for health professionals seeking a qualification in management, graduates seeking a qualification to equip them for public health practice and health administrators and policy workers seeking public health research experience. 3 ANU College of Medicine, Biology & Environment

4 Coursework program 7910XMPH Program requirements The Master of Public Health (MPH) program consists of 48 units of coursework comprising: > > 24 units of core courses; > > At least 6 units of quantitative electives; and > > 18 units of graduate level elective courses. Relevant courses offered by the International Alliance of Research Universities (IARU) (http://www.iaruni.org/) may also be selected. Admission requirements The minimum academic requirement for admission to the Master of Public Health program is completion of an undergraduate degree from a recognised university in the health or medical sciences, science, the humanities or social sciences, of an acceptable standard. Students who have a combination of education and relevant experience in the health sector or related area will also be considered. ANU English requirements must be satisfied. Who should enrol? The research component of the program (MEDI8206 Public Health Research Project) consists of a one year full-time (or two years part-time) research project. Students must maintain a Distinction (70%) average in the 48 unit coursework component, have written commitment from a proposed supervisor and an acceptable research project proposal. Students who do not meet these requirements may opt to transfer to the 48 unit Master of Public Health. Admission requirements The minimum academic requirement for admission to the Master of Public Health (Research) program is completion of an undergraduate degree from a recognised university in the health or medical sciences, science, the humanities or social sciences, at mid-distinction average (75%) standard. Alternatively, MPH students who have achieved 75% average in the first 24 units of the MPH may be offered transfer to the MPH (Research). ANU English requirements must be satisfied. Continuation requirements To remain in the program, students are required to maintain a Distinction (70%) average. If this is not met, students can opt to exit with a Master of Public Health degree. 8 course code offered by course subject unit value CHMD8004 ANU Medical School Qualitative Methodologies for Health Research 6 units Qualitative Methodologies for Health Research CHMD8004 This course provides the student with the principles of qualitative research methods for anthropological fieldwork as well as for applied interdisciplinary health research. A core component of this subject is training in analytic thinking and in the development of a research proposal. Students will acquire knowledge in qualitative methods, such as participant observation, taking field notes, field-diary writing, in-depth interviews and focus groups. Students will be expected to participate in exercises designed to enhance skills and techniques throughout the course. 9 course code offered by course subject unit value POPH8100 National Centre for Epidemiology & Population Health Fundamentals of Epidemiology 6 units Fundamentals of Epidemiology POPH8100 Epidemiology is the study of the distribution and determinants of health in populations and the application of this study to improve health. It is a required skill for many aspects of public health practice. This course introduces the basic concepts and methods of epidemiology, including study design; measures of disease frequency and association; bias, confounding and effect modification; causality; screening; and disease surveillance. The course also covers the basic tools necessary for using and interpreting population health data and demonstrates how these can be applied to improve population health and reduce health inequalities. 10 course code offered by course subject unit value MEDI8203 ANU Medical School Introduction to Health Policy and Administration 6 units Introduction to Health Policy and Administration MEDI8203 This course provides an introduction to health care systems, clinical governance and policy analysis. The institutional structure of the Australian health system will be covered in broad outline, with comparisons to alternative systems and illustration of the major economic aspects of the system. We will then examine the governance and management of clinical care and the stewardship of the health of the population. The course will conclude by considering how to construct a policy analysis of health issues and reform proposals. The one semester course will be taught over four hours contact time per week with associated readings, and include presentations from experts involved in the operation and reform of the health system, as well as student presentations. Course syllabus will include: > > Introduction to health care systems Public, private and charitable institutions of the health sector in Australia economics, finance and markets in the Australian system > > Clinical governance/health stewardship Managing health service clinical performance clinician performance > > Policy analysis the purpose of government and policy administrative technologies Learning Outcomes On completion of this subject, students will be able to: > > Describe the major components of the Australian health system and understand how it differs from some other health systems > > Explain the some of the economic aspects of health system operation, with reference to the institutional structure of the system and the provision of health care to the population > > Describe some of the major mechanisms used to govern the provision of clinical care and manage health services > > Understand the concept of health stewardship and describe how politicians, policy decision makers and managers can contribute to the health of the community. > > Systematically analyse health issues and develop health policy reform proposals. 10 Master of Public Health Program

11 course code offered by course subject unit value MEDI8204 ANU Medical School Contemporary Issues in Public Health 6 units Contemporary Issues in Public Health MEDI8204 Students will attend and participate in seminars on contemporary public health topics given by the Convenor and invited guest speakers. In addition, students will present a seminar themselves on a contemporary public health issue. Ideally, students take this course in their final semester of the MPH. 12 course code offered by course subject unit value MEDI8207 ANU Medical School Public Health Research Project Development 6 units Public Health Research Project Development MEDI8207 In this course, students will develop a practical public health research project. Each student will work with a supervisor who can offer expert guidance on the literature review and development of the research project. Students can work in pairs on their project if they wish. We expect only a minority of students who take this course will go on to conduct the research project (eg. as an elective in the MPH or a proposal for a PhD). Those not intending to actually conduct the research will develop a hypothetical project. Students will cover the following topics: > > Public health problem solving through research > > Literature review > > Phrasing research questions > > Research project design and methodology > > Planning the analysis of results > > Research ethics Learning Outcomes On completion of this subject, students will be able to: > > Search for and summarise the literature relevant to a public health problem > > Formulate a public health research question > > Identify suitable methods for investigating a public health research question and formulate a research plan 12 Master of Public Health Program

This will usually be a component of a longer research project and could comprise activities such as literature review, protocol formulation and piloting, data collection, analysis and/ or writing up for publication.
