2 Welcome Despite the many challenges impacting Australia s schooling sector, we are in the midst of an unprecedented shift in school leadership. As 70% of Australia s school principals reach retirement age over the next five years, great opportunities abound for our brightest and best educators to assume formal leadership positions and mould the future of our school systems. Through a broad network of education stakeholders, the National Excellence in School Leadership Initiative [NESLI] directly responds to the challenges and opportunities presented by this radical change. Central to the initiative is the roll-out of the Australian Schools Colloquium - designed to expedite and consolidate the development of school leaders across all areas. The Colloquium combines the very best leadership development pedagogy from the corporate sector with the complex and changing needs of contemporary school leadership. Through NESLI, we invite current and aspiring teachers across all areas to consider the Colloquium as a great opportunity to support their leadership journey. Damien Farrell National Director, National Excellence in School Leadership Initiative Chief Executive Officer, Australian School of Applied Management This program had a significant impact on the leadership knowledge, skills, and ability of our executive members, and data indicates that teaching practices and learning outcomes have improved as result of participation in this program. I cannot recommend the Colloquium program more highly for present and future school leaders. Mark Harris, Principal, Auburn North Public School 31
3 What is the Australian Schools Special Education Colloquium? The Australian Schools Special Education Colloquium is an intensive ten-month leadership development program that focuses on the critical dimensions of effective leadership. The program equips school leaders with the insights, skills and confidence to accelerate their own development as they strengthen the performance of those around them. The Australian Schools Special Education Colloquium employs a blended learning methodology based around expert tuition, peer knowledge-sharing, and practical workplace application. Throughout the program, learnings are related back to the day-to-day realities and challenges of each participant within the school context. FACE TO FACE WORKSHOP SESSION Prior to the commencement of the formal program, participants come together for a full day connection and preparation session. This helps to develop the collegiality of the group and provide alignment on the program objectives. LEADERSHIP CAPABILITY SURVEY To commence the formal program participants will complete a leadership capability survey on core leadership and management competencies. Findings from the survey facilitate the development of an individual action plan that assists each participant to extract optimal value from the program. INTERACTIVE ONLINE SESSIONS Throughout the program participants attend fourteen interactive online sessions. These sessions can be accessed from any desktop computer or mobile device allowing for minimal disruption to participants workday. The live online sessions allow participants to interact directly and engage in meaningful discussion pertinent to the respective module. SELF-PACED LEARNING MODULES Throughout the program, participants explore the challenges and opportunities of their roles through the filter of seven key modules: Leadership and Authenticity Communication, Presence and Influence Team Dynamics Driving Performance Leading Innovation and Change Thinking Strategically Purpose, Priorities and Professional Development PEER COACHING Four peer coaching sessions are interwoven throughout the program. The coaching agenda is guided by the individual action plans and is critical in ensuring that the Colloquium experience delivers optimal value to each participant. 4 Application process for the Australian Schools Special Education Colloquium Interested parties are required to complete an Application Form. Admission into the program is at the discretion of NESLI. The application form may be obtained by contacting the NESLI office on PROGRAM FEES Standard enrolment fee (without Funding): $5,980 Subsidised enrolment fee: $1,980 (requires successful application for Special Education Teachers Funding). FUNDING FOR AUSTRALIA S SPECIAL EDUCATION TEACHERS Funding is presently available to offset approximately two-thirds of Colloquium fees for Australia s Special Education teachers. Through the funding mechanism, NESLI aims to increase the accessibility of the program to Special Education teachers. Funding applicants are required to acknowledge their intention to seek funding via the formal Application Form. Funding is periodically reviewed and is subject to quotas. DELFI FEE DEFERRAL The Deferral of Educational Leaders Fees Initiative allows enrolment fees to be deferred over 1 year. This initiative reflects the funding challenges faced by many Australian schools. CONTACT DETAILS To discuss the program in greater detail or to request an application form, please contact NESLI on the details provided below. Office of the National Director, NESLI Australian School of Applied Management Phone: Address: Level 9, 607 Bourke Street Melbourne Postal: PO Box 4079, Melbourne University VIC 3052 Website: info@asam.edu.au About the National Excellence in School Leadership Initiative (NESLI) The National Excellence in School Leadership Initiative [NESLI] directly responds to a critical need for Australian schools - across all divides - to support the rapid development of resilient, dynamic school leaders. Over the next two years, through the NESLI partnership, the Australian School of Applied Management (ASAM) will facilitate the roll-out of the acclaimed Australian Schools Colloquium. Through the Australian Schools Colloquium, emerging school leaders are exposed to the very best leadership development tools, models, and educators from outside traditional school channels. By fostering the highest standards in school leadership, the Colloquium helps to create the conditions in which optimal teaching and learning can flourish. At its essence, the Colloquium helps to cultivate leaders who seek to engage and inspire school communities to develop a shared vision and strategic direction for all school community members. 3
5 Australian School Leaders Alumni The Australian School Leaders Alumni (ASLA) has been created to provide a much sought after channel for school leaders to network, learn, and exchange ideas. Through various online and offline activities, ASLA is fast becoming an invaluable part of the contemporary school leaders professional toolkit. ASLA is open to education professionals from all education systems including government, independent and catholic. In that regard, alumni members enjoy a unique platform to cut across the various sectors and streams and access the best available thinking and practices regardless of where it resides. ASLA BENEFITS Unique forum to network with like-minded education leaders across all school systems and geographies Invitations to attend exclusive alumni events, public lectures and professional development workshops Access to periodical NESLI whitepapers and industry updates Access to ASLA online resources and social media platform Invitation to become an accredited mentor to support NESLI s school leaders mentoring platform ASLA MEMBERSHIP CRITERIA Graduates of the Australian Schools Colloquium Colloquium graduates automatically become eligible for ASLA membership. Further, ASLA fees are waived for all Colloquium graduates for a period of 5 years. Non-graduates of the Australian Schools Colloquium School leaders who have not completed the Colloquium may apply for membership (fees apply for non-colloquium graduates) on the basis of specific criteria. Interested parties are required to submit an official application form. Membership is open to teaching and non-teaching school professionals. The Australian School Leaders Alumni provides a wonderful platform for Australia s school leaders, across all systems, to come together as a single community. When we think about a school leader from Sydney exchanging ideas with a school leader from Arnhem Land... what a tremendous opportunity. Dominic Meachen, General Manager Operations, Australian School of Applied Management 10 4
