1 015UPDATE (A CLINICALLY FOCUSED PROGRAM) Age Concern is proud to present the 015 update to our acclaimed Dementia Programs. The program covers all the relevant recommendations of the Senate Inquiry, as well the feedback from the two () coronial inquiries and the two () government urgent roundtable meetings This program is University recognised LIVE VIRTUAL CLASSROOM The full course including assignments and journal articles equates to 35 CPD hours The full course (without assignments or articles) equates to 30 CPD hours Individual sessions may be taken, each equating to CPD hours The program will be presented LIVE in our virtual classroom. The Live classroom option is a great way of learning, allowing you to direct questions to and interact with the facilitators. Session Days: Monday (commencing March 015) Session Times: 1100 to 130 AEDT (SA 1030 hrs; QLD 1000 hrs; NT 0945 hrs; WA 0800 hrs) Note: All sessions are recorded so, if you cannot attend the Live Sessions, you can easily listen to the recordings at your leisure! The program must be completed within four months of commencement. There are individual objectives for each session. We provide all contemporary reading material for the full program Entry Requirements & Assessment ENTRY REQUIREMENTS To complete the program, each applicant must be licensed to practice as a registered nurse and be registered with the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Australia. To complete the case studies the applicant will require rightful access to nursing and medical records of clients. MINIMUM HOURS OF INSTRUCTION time table are the mandatory minimum, and includes hours used to view the archived sessions. 3 Session Details Session 1 - Nursing practice and responsibility Knowing which and how the NMBA documents will support your nursing practice At the completion of the session the registered nurse should be able to integrate ethical, professional and legal responsibilities as per the National Competency Standards for the Registered Nurse, and the other documents that guide nursing practice in Australia, into the care of people with neurocognitive disorders Mon March AEDT * competency standards for registered and enrolled nurses * ensuring all practice within designated scope * legal and professional documentation; the facts only * duty of care Session - Introduction to evidence based practice and ethic Check the ethics and evidence of your nursing practice Mon 9 March AEDT to discuss the tenets of evidence-based care; discuss the issues and promote applied ethics to the everyday practices of clients with neurocognitive disorders. * an overview of what is evidence based practice; where the evidence may be found * an overview of ethics * a decision making process for nurses caring for clients with a dementia * evaluating the evidence and ethics of routine nursing practices 015 Session 3 - The Brain A review of the brain structure and function Mon 16 March AEDT At the completions of this session, the registered nurse should be able to propose possible areas cerebral pathology based on the symptom presentation in clients with neurocognitive disorders. * review of cerebral anatomy and physiology anatomical regions * the role of neurotransmitters * relating symptoms back to possible damage Session 4 - Non-Alzheimer s neurocognitive disorders Mon 3 March AEDT to discuss diagnostic criteria for neurocognitive disorders (dementia) of the most common sub-types (non-alzheimer s); critically analyse the screening tools, methods and assessment data to identify clients with a possible neurocognitive disorder * frontotemporal neurocognitive disorders, both variants * neurocognitive disorder with Lewy bodies, identifying both core and suggestive features * vascular neurocognitive disorders recognising; probable and possible symptoms * assessments

4 Session 5 Alzheimer s Disease This is all you need to know about Alzheimer s disease, not inclusive of nursing care. Mon 30 March AEDT to discuss diagnostic criteria for the neurocognitive disorder Alzheimer s disease, the pathophysiology and symptom presentation. * pathophysiology * risk factors and recent research * symptom presentation; diagnosis; assessment tools & processes * treatments & the future Session 6 Depression At the completions of this session the registered nurse should be able to discuss the diagnostic criteria for depression; critically analyse the screening tools, assessment methods and assessment data to identify clients with a possible depression symptoms; discuss the use of pharmacological preparations, psychotherapy and electro-convulsive therapy as treatment options for depression in elderly people. Mon 0 April AEDT At the completions of this session, the registered nurse should be able to discuss the diagnostic criteria for neurocognitive disorder (delirium); critically analyse assessment tools, methods, risk factors and the potential causes of delirium to facilitate the development, implementation and evaluation of appropriate nursing interventions to minimise the development of and or duration of a delirium. * diagnostic criteria for delirium; risk factors; mortality & morbidity for delirium * the role of nursing documentation and patient outcomes * the issue of UTIs and out dated practices * assessment tools and nursing responsibilities and interventions

5 Session 9 Nursing Assessment Recommended processes and tools Mon 7 April AEDT to critically analyse assessment processes and tools for the care of clients with neurocognitive disorders; translate cognitive assessment data in to supportive, planned and personalised care for clients with neurocognitive disorders. * reviews direction of NMBA and assessment activities; tools * discusses assessment tools and processes * translating cognitive assessment data into planned person centred care Session 10 Pharmacology in Elderly People Overview of medication in the elderly Mon 4 May AEDT to discuss the age related changes in pharmacokinetics and older person with a neurocognitive disorder; identify appropriate professional assessment activities for adverse drug reactions * Review of the pharmacokinetics and pharmacodynamics in elderly people * the issue of adverse drug responses in elderly people * half-life and steady state * antipsychotics in patients with neurocognitive disorders & drugs for Alzheimer s Session 11 Introduction to Progressively Lowered Stress Threshold Care Model (PLST) Mon 11 May AEDT to discuss the value of care models; the assumptions of the PLST model; related to neurocognitive disorders * the use of models for planned, person centred care * PLST, to understand and reduce the behaviours associated with Alzheimer s disease * factors impacting on symptom presentation * clustering of symptoms. Session 1 Cognitive losses Mon 18 May AEDT At the completion of this session the registered nurse should be able to assess for and critically analyse the presentation of cognitive symptoms and develop personalised, planned interventions to support memory & other cognitive losses; including visuospatial, agnosia, aphasia, executive function. * introduction to memory; implicit (procedural)l and explicit (semantic, episodic & autobiographical) * using implicit memory to support client when explicit memory is impaired * developing social activities using retained memory * evidencing your support
