1 Professional Development Program 2013 The Programs Wellbeing Forum The Essence of Managing Chronic Illness will be discussed by Dr Craig Hassed, general practitioner and senior lecturer at the Monash University department of general practice. This model incorporates education, stress management, spirituality, exercise, nutrition, connectedness and environment. The forum will also involved interactive case studies and various come and try sessions including Mindfulness Medication with Dr Hassed, a laughter session, drumming, reiki, Nordic walking and singing. Come and Try sessions are designed to give you an experience that you can then share with the clients with whom you work as you explore wellbeing together. Thursday 28 February MS in the 21st Century Thursday 23 May This program will support health professionals to understand what MS is, disease progression, current treatments, including symptom management. Services of MS Australia will also be discussed. The presenters will be Dr Elizabeth McDonald, Medical Director and associated neurologists. In the afternoon participants will have the options of attending one of three concurrent seminars; Supporting Vulnerable Families Take Control & Plan Ahead Mood & Emotions in MS Violence against women remains a serious and pervasive issue that affects individuals, families and communities. Women with a disability experience violence and abuse at a much greater rate with compounding problems. How do we recognise and determine vulnerability and what services are available to support you to support your clients? This program, jointly led by the Family Violence Outreach program, Family Life and MS Australia will give you practical tools and strategies to assist you in your work. The law in Victoria gives us all a number of ways to ensure we have maximum control over how decisions are made when we are not in a position to make those decisions ourselves. This session will provide an overview of the various types of Enduring Powers of Attorney, Guardianship and Administration. Discussion about the VCAT process will also form part of the program. Led by the MSA Social Workers, the Legal Aid & Office of the Public Advocate publication Take Control will also be available on the day. Psychological changes and difficulties are common in people with MS. Up to 50% of people with MS may experience depression at some point in their lives. Depression and anxiety can affect and exacerbate MS symptoms.. In this program we discuss the prevalence of mood and other psychological disorders, factors contributing to their development, and appropriate interventions. The session covers issues that arise when providing psychotherapy for people with MS as well as suggestions for overcoming roadblocks to treatment.
2 Professional Development Program 2013 Promoting Physical Function Led by the MS Australia Physiotherapists, this program provides: Evidence for the benefits of physical activity. Information about appropriate levels of activity to engage people with MS. Information about appropriate physiotherapy interventions over the course of the disease. Tuesday 16 April 1.30pm 4.30pm Understanding Parkinson s Disease Facilitated by Parkinson s Victoria, this session will explain Parkinson s Disease and explore strategies that assist clients to live well with this chronic condition. A general introduction to Parkinson s, including symptoms, cause, incidence, treatment options and current research, medication management and side-effects. Practical strategies used by Physiotherapists, Occupational Therapists and Speech Pathologists, to address concerns such as getting out of bed, improving mobility, help with freezing, speech and swallowing. Information on Parkinson s Victoria, including the support services provided. Information about community and Government services commonly accessed by people living with Parkinson s. Friday 10 May 1.30pm 4.30pm Managing MS Fatigue MS Fatigue is different from everyday fatigue. About 80% of people with MS experience fatigue as a major symptom. Led by our experienced Occupational Therapists, this session looks at the nature of MS Fatigue and strategies to help MS clients better manage this symptom that has such disabling implications. Tuesday 18 June 9.30am 12.30pm Managing Cognition & Behaviour Change Common, but less recognized, MS-related cognitive difficulties include concentrating, learning & recalling information, thinking quickly, multi-tasking & planning efficiently. Common emotional changes such as depression can also affect thinking & memory. This session will explore common MS-related cognitive changes and their management in the context of both the larger symptom picture and everyday cognitive management strategies This first half of this program will be led by the Neuropsychologists with a focus on exploring the changes that can occur The second half of the day will be led by the Occupational Therapists focusing on managing these changes. Tuesday 30 July
3 Professional Development Program 2013 MS Continence Workshop Continence issues in MS are more complex than in other neurological conditions. This program is designed to give nurses more detailed knowledge of the potential bladder and bowel issues for people with MS experience and strategies that can be implemented to assist. Led by Louise Kurczycki, Continence Nurse with Eastern Health, this session will look at general continence-related anatomy, things that can go wrong, the neurogenic bladder & bowel and more specifically the MS bladder & bowel. Wednesday 21 August MND Care - Getting it Right The decision to accept assistance from home and community care providers or move into residential care can be extremely difficult for both the person with motor neurone disease (MND) and their family. They may feel a loss of personal privacy and be concerned that their individual and complex needs will not be understood. Care providers may also feel overwhelmed by the complex care needs of the person with MND. Facilitated by MND Victoria, this training will increase awareness of MND and its progressive nature, provide information and practical advice regarding some of the common experiences of people living with MND and develop an appreciation of the importance of quality of life for someone facing a life limiting illness. Thursday 5 September 1.30pm 4.30pm Sexuality talking to your clients Chronic illness impacts sexuality physically and psychologically. What are the changes caused by chronic progressive illnesses such as MS? What help is available and how do you raise the topic with your clients? This informative session will discuss the issues, provide some strategies and explore the practical aspects. Led by Dr Elizabeth McDonald, MS Australia s Medical Director, Prof Doug Lording, Endocrinologist and Men's health expert, Dr Gary Fulcher, MS Australia Clinical Psychologist, Narelle Higson, Occupational Therapist specialising in Sexuality with MS Society of WA. Thursday 31st October 9.30am 12.30pm Psychosocial Aspects of Chronic Illness Developed by the MS Australia Social Workers in collaboration with Parkinson s Victoria. This session will provide you with resources and information to assist your clients in selfmanagement.
