1 A Message from Director Rick McGahey Welcome to the master s degree program in Environmental Policy and Sustainability Management (EPSM). We are delighted that you have decided to join our Spring 2015 Incoming Class. Classes begin on Monday, January 26. Between now and then, we want to help you get oriented and offer you our support for the academic work ahead. When you reserved your space in our Spring 2015 Class, you received information about your newschool.edu address. Please make sure you activate this address and check it regularly. It is through this address that we will communicate program news and events, as well as information about student services, registration, and orientation. Please read the following to get started in the program. After you confirm your enrollment, you can register online beginning Monday, December 8, 2014 at 9:00AM. Find resources for incoming students on Milano Central Resources for students You will find the Spring 2015 Schedule and other valuable resources for incoming students on Milano Central Spring 2015 course advisement for incoming students Once you have reserved your place in the Spring 2015 class, please Director Rick McGahey mcgaheyr@newschool.edu or Suzanne Bostwick, Associate Director Academic Programs bostwics@newschool.edu for an individual advising appointment. Advisement can take place in person, over the phone, or via . At the conclusion of your advisement meeting, you will receive your registration pin number. Each semester, you will receive a new registration (alternate) PIN to complete the registration process. Online registration is located in MyNewSchool on the Student Tab. You will find more information about getting registered for classes here. How many courses should I take my first semester? Full-time students normally take three to four courses per semester (9-12 credit hours). Part-time students normally take two courses per semester (6 credit hours). You may need to take a certain number of courses to maintain eligibility for student loans, some scholarships, etc. Know what is required. It is possible that one or more required courses can be waived depending on your undergraduate record, both course content and your performance in that course. In preparation for your advising session, please review your undergraduate transcript for possible waivers and be ready to discuss those. Any waivers do not reduce the total credits you need to graduate a waiver would allow you to take an additional elective, but you still would need 42 credits to graduate.

2 Planning your schedule A Typical Full Time Schedule One Core Course Economics for Management and Public Policy OR Quantitative Methods CRN 6157: Econ for Management and Public Policy, David Howell, Tuesday 6 pm 7:50 pm Requires enrollment in corresponding Lab section (either CRN 6158 or 6159) This core course provides an understanding of basic economic principles, beginning with the core concepts of demand and supply, markets, and competition. It helps understand market failures and apply economic principles to policy problems such as the concentration of economic power and resources, social inequality, and protecting the environment. Throughout, the course explicitly examines the role of government and the tools available to policy-makers to influence markets. CRN 5862: Quantitative Methods, Nebahat Tokatli, Monday 12 pm 3:50 pm CRN 5866: Quantitative Methods, Rachel Meltzer, Wednesday 6 pm 9:50 pm CRN 5863: Quantitative Methods, Aaron Hill, Thursday 6 pm 9:50 pm This course covers basic statistical methods and how to apply them to policy analysis and management decision-making. Students develop an appreciation for statistics, become statistically literate, learn to use statistical techniques properly, gain confidence using SPSS software, and acquire the skills necessary to look at statistical analyses critically. Two to Three Program Courses Principles of Environmental Science Climate Change and Cities Sustainability Perspectives and Practice OR Making a Difference Requirement: Environmental Law and Science Choose from the following courses CRN 5935: Principles of Environmental Science, Konstantine Rountos, Monday 6 pm 7:50 pm In order for management professionals to address issues of sustainability adequately, they need to know and understand some of the basic underlying science. This course will introduce students to the fundamental scientific, technical, and analytical issues relating to environmental studies, providing a strong foundation so they can be conversant in the multidisciplinary environmental that is sustainability management. At the same time, students will develop the communications skills necessary to operate successfully in this space. Learning Objectives: What are the limits to human/economic growth What are the boundary conditions limiting growth/continued ecosystems support of human activities Issues around human population growth and associated impacts Basic sustainability science, including biogeochemical cycles, ecosystem processes, global warming, urban pollution and sprawl, land use change, water use and availability An introduction to the quantification tools for applied sustainability, including Life Cycle Analysis, Materials Flow Analysis, and Ecosystem Valuation Presentation skills to communicate core sustainability issues to the wider world.

3 CRN 5801: Climate Change and Cities, Shagun Mehrotra, Tuesday 4 pm 5:50 pm Climate change is altering the ways our cities are planned and managed, affecting more than half the world s households and most firms. United Nations estimates that three billion people will be added to cities by 2050, predominantly in slums of Africa and Asia. In this course students learn about this critical global environmental challenge and explore city responses to climate change. The focus is on familiarizing the students with practical applications of frameworks for city climate risk assessment. The course provides an introduction to the importance of climate science, the tools to unpacking urban risks, adaptation and mitigation mechanism, and policy options for urban sectors like energy and transport, and their system-wide interactions through land use and governance. To develop problem solving strategies for environmental planning and management, students will learn the importance of including economic, social, and technical analyses that are spatially and temporally disaggregated, drawing on case studies from major cities around the world. CRN 6030: Sustainability Perspectives and Practice, Ana Baptista, Tuesdays 6pm - 7:50pm This course provides an array of perspectives from which sustainability issues are viewed, including ecopsychology, environmental history, deep ecology, ecofeminism, environmental justice, bioregionalism, Green political movements, ecological identity, and consumer-behavior studies. The course will introduce specific competencies for sustainability practice, including negotiation, conflict resolution, decision-making, communication, interprofessional collaboration for systemic change, and reflective practice. The goal is to inform professional practice by broadening students views on relevant issues through multiple lenses, while also focusing problem solving, seeking to balance knowledge generalization and specialization. Requirement for the MS, Environmental Policy and Sustainability Management Course Meeting the Making a Difference Requirement CRN 5806: Environmental Law and Science, Hilary Semel, Thursday 6 pm 7:50 pm Since the early 1970s, the interdisciplinary fields of environmental law and science have informed the environmental policies that are widely practiced today. In the past decade, these disciplines have influenced the growing practice of sustainability management, therefore, a strong understanding of law and science is essential for effective analysts and managers. This course reviews key provisions of environmental law and the scientific and social principles that underlie such laws. Moreover, it will examine the application of these disciplines to particular issues in environmental policy and sustainability management. The goal of the course is to familiarize students with environmental law and science and to provide experience in applying these principles. Meets the Making a Difference Requirement for the MS, Environmental Policy and Sustainability Management. Other options meeting this requirement may be approved with prior consultation with director of the Environmental Policy and Sustainability Management program.
