Registration for Spring 2013 classes is scheduled to begin on November 14 and November 15 for the Class of Your first opportunity to register will be on one of these two days; you can continue to make changes to your schedule through the first week of classes in Spring semester. 2

Prior to Registration, the Advising CenterStaff are available to answer your questions, help you explore your major options and talk with you about minors. They can also help you prepare to meet with your faculty advisor. Students who are majoring in the Haub School of Business should go to the William F. Leahy Advising Center in 289 Mandeville. Arts & Sciences students should go to the CAS Advising Support Center in 122 Barbelin Hall. Students considering a change of major should consult the Advising Center for that major. It s important tto submit your change of major paperwork well ahead of your registration it ti time so that the your major will be updated in the system. You will also need to discuss your Spring 2013 schedule with a faculty advisor in your new department. 3

If you major in the college of Arts & Sciences, you will graduate with either a Bachelor of Arts or a Bachelor of Science, depending on your major. If you major in the Haub School of Business, you will graduate with a Bachelor of Science. For most majors, 40 courses (3 credits or more) are required for graduation. Exceptions to this include Biology (a minimum of 38 courses is required) and Elementary Education 4 8 (a minimum of 42 courses is required). These 40 courses required for graduation include: General Education Program Courses Major and divisional courses Electives (electives may be used to complete an optional double major or minor) A minimum cumulative GPA of 2.0 is required for graduation, and you must complete your final 10 courses at SJU. Students sometimes take summer and/or intersession courses to catch up or get ahead in their requirements for graduation. Please note that no more than 6 courses are allowed to be completed outside of the Fall & Spring semesters. Students typically declare a major no later than the Spring of Sophomore year. Students may request permission to pursue a second major for sound academic reason. Both majors are noted on the final transcript. The degree granted will be the degree appropriate for the declared primary major. To stay on track to graduate, you must complete 5 courses each semester. Five courses X eight semesters = 40 4

To summarize, the 40 courses required for graduation in the College of Arts & Sciences include: General Education Program Courses (Maximum 18 courses) Major courses Electives (Your electives may be used to complete an optional double major or minor) 5

GEP Requirementsfall into four main categories: (1) signature courses (2) variable courses, (3) integrated learning courses, (4) overlay requirements. 6

Non-transfer students must take their signature core courses at SJU. Advanced Placement (AP) credit cannot be used to fulfill any of the signature course requirements. These six signature courses include: PHL 154 Moral Foundations THE 154 Faith, Justice and the Catholic Tradition ENG 102 Texts and Contexts (pre-req: req: ENG 101) HIS 154 Forging the Modern World First Year Seminar Faith and Reason course (pre-reqs: PHL 154 and THE 154) 7

Transfer credit and/or AP credit may be used to satisfy GEP variable requirements. Please note that some majors require that specific courses be completed to fulfill various components of the variable core. 8

GEP Art/Literature courses teach students to appreciate beauty and artistic or literary expression. This requirement may be satisfied by Any Visual Arts Course Any Music, Theater, or film Course Select Literature Courses in English, Foreign Languages, and Classics 9

Mathematics (Beauty) courses will provide an in-depth introduction to theoretical mathematics as a branch of pure science. The requirement may be satisfied by a Calculus I or higher level course (MAT 155 or higher) as well as any one of the courses specified as a beauty course. Students who earn a 4 or 5 on the AB or BC Calculus AP test have fulfilled the math beauty requirement. Please note that some majors require specific math courses. Talk with your major advisor and/or consult the SJU Catalog for more information. See the Math Placement section of this tutorial for additional information. 10

Natural Science Laboratory courses will promote scientific literacy through the study of fundamental scientific principles and concepts, the method of scientific inquiry, and the role/application of science in everyday life. A number of majors (including science majors) require specific lab courses to fulfill this requirement. For example, for Interdisciplinary Health Services majors, General Chemistry I is required. Non-science majors may fulfill this requirement in a number of ways: AP credit for two science courses Completion of one 4-credit lab science course Completion of two non-lab science courses. 11

Studying a foreign language is an integral part of your SJU education. Learning a second language helps you connect with people across the globe and engages you with a rich diversity of ideas, cultures, and political, social, and religious systems. Typically students complete 1-2 courses at the level in which they are placed. For additional information on the language requirement, language options, and placement, please see the Non-Native Language section of this tutorial. 12

The social/behavioral science requirement may be satisfied by one GEP approved course from any of the following departments: Economics, Education, Political Science, Psychology, or Sociology. Please note that a number of majors require a specific course to fulfill the GEP social/behavioral science requirement. Students are advised to consult with their major department and/or review the SJU Undergraduate Catalog. 13

Philosophical Anthropology courses examine selected issues concerning the nature of personhood and the human condition. A range of 3-credit courses will be offered by the Philosophy department to satisfy this requirement. Examples include: *PHL 250 Philosophy of Death *PHL 252 Philosophy of Karl Marx *PHL 254 Philosophy and the Democratic Body *PHL 256 Freedom and Determinism *PHL 258 The Authentic Self: Augustine, Kierkegaard, Heidegger For some majors, a specific course may need to be taken to fulfill this requirement. Please consult your major requirements for additional information. 14

This course will require students to gain a critical understanding of one or more religious worldviews that differ from the Roman Catholic perspective. Students will engage in either in-depth study of a non-christian religious tradition or take a comparative religions course that in some measure addresses the issue of religious diversity. Courses that fulfill this requirement are offered through both Religious studies and Theology. 15

Eng 101 The Craft of Language fulfills this requirement. A student who earns a 4 or a 5 on the AP English Literature or English Language test will receive credit for ENG 101 and will be placed in ENG 102 in the first semester. 16

There are a number of steps to take before your registration date. We will review some of these items in more details later in this PowerPoint. These steps include: Check your registration status for holds Contact your advisor to schedule an advising meeting Review requirements for your major Undeclared students - research/explore major options Make a list of courses you re interested in taking - have a plan B Meet with your Faculty Advisor Get your PIN and verify that it works Know your registration time check your SJU for updates 20

To do this, log into My SJU and click on the My Courses Tab. Then Click on Check Registration Status found in the Registration and Advising block. 21

Select Spring 2013 from the pull-down menu. 22

Your Registration date and time will be listed. Students with Priority Registration status (including Athletes and Honors students) will register at noon on Wednesday, November 14. All other students are divided randomly into groups with times on Thursday, November 15. If you have a hold that will prevent your registration, you need to resolve the problem as soon as possible so that you can register at the earliest possible time. If have a financial hold that will prevent registration, please consult with Hawk Central in Barbelin 121. If you have an immunization hold, please see Student Health Services in Sourin Hall, 1 st Floor. For other types of holds, please talk with someone in the Advising Center for your College. We will direct you to the appropriate office to resolve the problem. 23

To verify that your PIN works: log onto My SJU Click on the My Courses tab click on Add or Drop Classes 24

Select Spring 2013 from the pull down menu. 25

Enter your 6-digit PIN into the box. If the PIN is correct, you ll get an message telling you it is not yet time to register. If the PIN is incorrect, you will get an error message. If this happens, please contact your advisor as soon as possible. 26

To help determine which courses you need, check the website of the advising center for your school. 27

College of Arts & Sciences students can go to the CAS ASC website and click on CAS Majors & Minors. 28

Scroll down to find your current major or another major you might be interested in. Click on GEP Major Worksheet for a document listing your major requirements and a typical course sequence. 29

The Typical Course sequence for each major gives you a roadmap for the possible courses by semester. You should discuss the sequence with your advisor to confirm what s best for you individually. Students who have AP credits or who have changed majors, as well as students involved in Service Learning or other activities which affected their fall schedules, may need to adjust the course sequence in Spring. 30

A few reminders 1. If you are not currently enrolled in a First Year Seminar (150 course), you must register for one in Spring. You will have free choice of any open seminar in the College of Arts and Sciences or the Haub School of Business. Exceptions: EDU 150, Schools in Society, which is required for (and restricted to) Education majors and students pursuing Secondary Ed certification. Students enrolled in a Service Learning section of Philosophy 154 this semester will complete the first year seminar designated by the service learning program in Spring. For example, students in Dr. McDonald s PHL 154 class this fall will complete her PHL 150 Just Food first year seminar in spring. You can search for First Year Seminars on the course schedule see the Searching for Classes section of this tutorial for help with effectively searching for first year seminars. 2. Students participating in the two-semester First Year Service Learning Program must register for the second part of the course (for example, those in a service section of ENG 101 this semester will register for a service section of ENG 102 in Spring). The Service Scholars will assist you with registration for your service course. 31

Students in the Honors program should consult with both their faculty advisor and their Honors advisor for help with their schedule. You can get additional help with planning your schedule and figuring out how to combine your major, GEP & Honors requirements at your Advising Center. 32

This page will list the components of the GEP. Click on the links for information about specific GEP requirements and what Spring classes will fulfill those requirements. For further information, please see your faculty advisor or consult your Advising Center. 33

Once you have determined what courses you would like to take for Spring, you will need to look up the classes on MySJU. 34

To find the course schedule, click on the My Courses tab and then Look up Classes. 35

Select Spring 2013 from the pull-down menu. 36

You can either do a basic search or an advanced search. If you are searching for a specific course (e.g., ENG 102 Texts & Contexts), you can use this basic search option. In this example, select English and click on course search. 37

Click on View Sections for the course you want 38

Your search will give you a list of all sections offered. Information on the course listing includes: 1. SELECT indicates the Course Status (SR = Seats Remaining and C = closed) 2. CRN refers to the Course Registration Number. The next slide will provide additional information about the CRN. 3. SUBJ and CRSE refer to the Subject and Course number (e.g., ENG 102) 4. SEC refers to the course section. Most courses for which you register will be D sections indicating the Day School (D01, D02, etc). Other section codes to be aware of include: P = Professional & Liberal Studies FY Day Students may NOT take these sections SL = Service Learning Course HN = Honors Section reserved for students in the general Honors program. FY = First year seminar 5. DAY & TIME refers to the meeting time for the class. Please note that R refers to Thursday. For example, ENG 102 section D03 meets TR (Tuesday & Thursday) from 4-5:15 PM. 6. CAP/ACT/REM these columns indicate the number of open seats remaining in the class. CAP refers to the capacity of the class ACT refers to the number of students enrolled in the class REM refers to the number of open seats remaining. i For example, ENG 102 SEC D03 Craft of Language has a capacity of 20 students. 24 students are enrolled, and there is 1 seat remaining. 7. BOOKS click on this link to view the books required for the course. 39

The CRN or Course Registration Number is a 5-digit number that is required when you add and/or drop a course. By clicking on the CRN link, you can view additional information about the course, including any restrictions that may prevent you from registering for a course. 40

From this view, click on the title of the course at the top of the screen. 41

This screen confirms the number of seats remaining as well as provides information on requirements for the course. In this example, you will see that this BIO 101 class has a capacity of 25 students. Eighteen students are registered; seven seats are open. It also notes that this class is restricted certain majors and requires that the BIO 101L lab be taken as a co-requisite with the lecture course. 42

If you are unsure of the course number, or you are looking for a course to fulfill a specific GEP requirement (for example, a FY seminar, Philosophical Anthropology, GEP Math Beauty, or other GEP requirement), you can use the advanced search function. 43

If a course requirement is offered through various departments (e.g., Faith & Reason, First Year Seminar, etc.), or you are unsure of the offerings, you will need to select multiple subjects in your search. For example, if you are searching for a Religious Difference Course, these courses are offered by both Theology and Religious Studies. To select both areas, click on Religious Studies and then scroll down to Theology. While holding the control key, click on Theology. As you will see in the example, both subjects are highlighted. As a side note, if you want to select a range of subjects rather than a few specific courses (for example, all subjects), you would hold the shift key while making your selections. The Attribute Field allows you to limit your search to courses that meet a specific requirement (e.g., GEP requirement, Faith-Justice course, Honors course, etc). In this example we selected the attribute Religious Difference. 44

Here are our search results. As you will note, the column on the far right indicates the attributes for this course. In this example, the search returned only those courses that meet the Religious difference requirement. 45

Have back-ups your top choice(s) may be filled by your registration time Make sure there are no pre-reqs or other restrictions on the course some sections of courses have restrictions for instance some sections of BIO 101 are restricted to BIO majors and others are open to anyone who is not a BIO or other science major. Most of the core Communications Studies courses require that you be a declared COM major Check the section code. One of the most common mistakes is that students try to register for a P section. These are for students in the College of Professional & Liberal Studies and they are not open to First Year Students t 46

On Registration Day, register at the earliest possible time. If you have class at your assigned time, register immediately after class. The following screens will walk you through the Registration Process. 47

To Register for classes, Log onto My SJU and click on the My Courses tab, then Add or Drop Classes 48

Select Spring 2013 from the pull-down menu. 49

Enter your 6-digit PIN into the box. 50

If you have already figured out your choices, enter in the CRNs for those classes in the registration worksheet and click Submit Changes. 51

If the course says Web Registered, then you are successfully registered for the course. If you do not get a web registered message, then you have not registered for the course. If the course is closed: some courses offer the option of an electronic waitlist (more information on the waitlist is offered on the next few slides). If no waitlist is available for the course, you will need to consider an alternate section or an alternate course. 52

Other error messages Information on other error messages is provided on the CAS Advising Support Center website ( under the registration section. Please see the Advising Center for your college for additional help and guidance. The most common errors (other than closed course) include: A course or a section is restricted to a specific major Level restriction. Students frequently try to register for a P section. These are for students in the College of Professional & Liberal Studies and they are not open to First Year Students. Make sure you check your section codes. Pre-requisite restriction. Some courses require other courses as pre-requisites. If you have not taken these courses, you will not be able to register for this course. (e.g., ACCT 101 and ECN 101 must be taken prior to taking FIN 200). 53

An electronic waitlist option is available for some courses, including select courses in Philosophy, Psychology and Theology/Religious Studies. To determine if a course offers a waitlist, look at the column WL Cap (Waitlist cap). WL Act indicates the number of students on the waitlist, and WL Rem indicates the number of waitlist seats remaining. For example, THE 211 section D04 Hebrew Bible has a WL Cap of 30. This indicates that up to 30 students can join the waitlist for this class. There is one student on the waitlist, indicating that there are 29 waitlist spots remaining. 54

When you attempt to register for a course that is full, but with an active waitlist, you will get a message offering you the option to join the waitlist. If you want to join the waitlist, choose that option. The system will then confirm your position on the waitlist. If a seat opens up, the first person on the waitlist will receive notification by SJU ; that person has 24 hours to claim the seat. If it is not claimed, then the seat will be opened to the next person on the waitlist. Make sure you check your frequently, so that you don t miss the opportunity to be registered for a waitlisted course. Students may put themselves on multiple waitlists for different sections of the same course; there is no limit on how many courses you can waitlist yourself for. The waitlisted sections will show up on your course schedule when you view it by day and time. 55

Please contact the Advising Center for your College if you have questions or need assistance throughout the process. 56
