6 Practice tutor The role Monitors progress in practice of a group of students throughout the module Participates in three face to face meetings with students and supervisors at the start, midpoint and end of the module Takes action if a student is at risk of failing Contributes to the quality assurance of learning environments and induction of supervisors

7 Supervisor The role Facilitates students practice-based learning Provides supervision Liaises with others about students performance Liaises with the practice tutor as required Participates in the three review meetings Completes practice assessment records Is accountable for the assessment of students performance in practice Alerts the practice tutor to any concerns

29 Using Levels of Practice criteria ~1 Supervisors assess students achievement against criteria adapted from Bondy (1983) and Benner (1984) All 56 skills must be achieved at the level of Direct Supervision by the end of K117 Each skill is assessed against three performance criteria Knowledge and understanding Practice performance Professional behaviour

30 Using Levels of practice criteria ~2 Knowledge & understanding Practice performance Professional behaviour Level of practice: Can practise safely under direct supervision (DS) Knowledge is usually accurate Begins to identify alternatives Can give rationale for actions Performance is accurate but not always efficient and lacks confidence Needs frequent supervision and guidance Can prioritise care but often needs prompting Adapts care to meet client s needs and current situation Unable to deal with nonroutine situations Gives standard explanations or does not qualify these or explore other possibilities
