2 Welcome Note 4th September 2014 Dear MAI Fifth Years Welcome to the Fifth Year of the integrated Engineering MAI in Trinity, leading to the MAI (Studia) degree. The five year MAI, which was launched last year, has been pioneered in order to meet the requirements for accreditation by Engineers Ireland, ensuring chartered status for your degree. The MAI is also consistent with the Bologna process and the European Framework of Qualifications. It harmonizes the various qualifications available to our students during the five year programme, using norms now established across the European Higher Education Area. As recipients of Ireland s first integrated masters in Engineering, your qualification will be recognized professionally and academically throughout the world. The academic year and module choice structures for the C, CD and D streams are summarized below. Descriptors of all the modules can be found on the School webpage: Please take the time, at the beginning of the Michaelmas term, to read the descriptors relevant to your stream, and to consider the objectives and learning outcomes of each. The expansion of the degree into five years affords many opportunities for deeper and more extensive treatment of key learning outcomes of the programme. With 42% of the Year Five programme (i.e. 25 ECTS out of a total of 60) committed to the Research Project (5E1), a major emphasis of the year is on fostering independence and technical creativity in the pursuit of substantial scientific and engineering design goals. Your project work will be research intensive, and informed by specialist knowledge in electronic and computer engineering. The advanced technical knowledge you will gain through the formal courses, and the opportunity that the Project itself will afford you to work with staff members and their research teams, together support these aims. The primary assessment mode, via a large scale dissertation, is designed to ensure that our MAI graduates achieve the highest standards in technical communication, and that they are familiar with international norms around the reporting of research. You will have been assigned a project and a supervisor before Michaelmas term begins. It is your responsibility to make contact with your supervisor at the beginning of term, to arrange your first meeting. Please note that the deadline for submission of the dissertation to the Departmental office is Tuesday, 7th April Please also take the time to acquaint yourself with the key regulations and organizational aspects of Year Five, which are provided below. 6 Attendance Please note the following extract from the University Calendar: For professional reasons, lecture and tutorial attendance in all years is compulsory in... the School of Engineering. Attendance at practical classes (laboratories) is also compulsory. All students must fulfill the requirements of the School with regard to attendance and course work. Students whose attendance or work is unsatisfactory in any year may be refused permission to take all or part of the annual examinations for that year. Where specific attendance requirements are not stated, students are non satisfactory if they miss more than a third of a required course in any term. At the end of the teaching term, students who have not satisfied the Department or School requirements may be reported to the Senior Lecturer s Office as non satisfactory for that term. In accordance with the regulations laid down by the University Council, non satisfactory students may be refused permission to take their annual examinations and may be required by the Senior Lecturer to repeat their year. Students should also familiarize themselves with the College s Examination Regulations. 7 Collaboration and Individual Work Engineering is about co operation, but also individual effort. The everyday fruits of Engineering, such as a jet aircraft or a suspension bridge or a microchip or a DVD player, have been designed and built by teams of hundreds, even thousands, of engineers working together. These engineers exchange ideas, and ultimately co ordinate their efforts to achieve the overall project goal. However, each component of even the largest project is the result of one individual s engineering skill and imagination. If you want to become a successful engineer, you must develop your own ability to analyze problems. This means that while it is useful to work as a team initially you must ultimately produce your own work. For example, in the case of a computing exercise, discuss the task with your classmates, swap ideas on how to solve the problem, but at the end of the day, implement your own solution. The examinations will test your ability rather than just your knowledge, and the only way to develop your ability for engineering analysis is to complete the laboratory and tutorial exercises yourself. In the academic world, the principal currency is ideas. As a consequence, you can see that plagiarism i.e. passing off other people s ideas as your own is tantamount to theft. The College s policy on plagiarism is set out in the College s General Regulations and Information booklet, or Section H of the College Calendar.
