3 02 DURATION 3 YEARS FULL-TIME OR EQUIVALENT PART-TIME ALBANY, MANAWATŪ WELLINGTON DISTANCE LEARNING BACHELOR OF COMMUNICATION BC Talking, tweeting, texting and typing. We live in a world of on-demand entertainment, 24/7 messaging and social engagement. This world needs communicators. It needs people who have the creativity and imagination to develop content that will inspire and connect people, and the logic, analysis and language skills to deliver that content in a strategic and meaningful way. Massey s Bachelor of Communication (BC) will give you these skills. GET THE BEST OF BOTH WORLDS In the BC we combine arts and business disciplines to give you the best of both worlds. You ll ignite your artistic flair and hone this with business savvy through a range of courses in marketing communication, journalism studies, public relations, communication management, media studies, linguistics and expressive arts. Our BC is the only communication degree in New Zealand that requires you to take both business and arts courses. This variety means you ll graduate not just with a degree, but as a well-rounded, innovative communication specialist who is sought after by employers. Our survey of past graduates showed 84% believed their BC studies were relevant to their present work. BE SOUGHT AFTER BY EMPLOYERS Massey BC graduates have had outstanding employment success. 96% of our students are employed after graduation, with the remaining students largely involved in further study, travel or family commitments. 88% of those were employed immediately after graduating! This is a much higher ratio than any national or international benchmarks for similar degrees. At Massey, we ll teach you skills in using up-to-date technology, and you will obtain deep insights into the communication industries. Massey opens the door for you to become a communication entrepreneur who understands how to develop new business models and can offer thought leadership in this rapidly evolving area of professional work. WELL-REGARDED You ll gain from the experience of the University and our world-renowned staff. Massey has the oldest journalism school in the country, and our marketing communication major is the longest-standing in New Zealand. Our teachers in the BC expressive arts papers (theatre, creative writing and media production) have won five national teaching awards. You ll study both business and humanities subjects, and you ll probably discover that neither is what you expected and you love most the one you didn t think you would! INTERESTING PROJECTS The BC offers you many opportunities to apply your learning to real-world problems. You ll produce strategies, media and publications that apply your communication learning. These include marketing strategies for community groups, social media content, documentary films, scripts for theatre, media or film, performances and speeches. REAL-WORLD INTERNSHIP Massey offers a communication internship paper to BC students with good grades. It allows you to work for a company while you study, network with future employers, and gain invaluable real-world experience. You could intern in inspiring organisations like NZ Red Cross, UNICEF, or Forest & Bird, in leading PR agencies, or for news media like the New Zealand Herald. 6 05 ngeorgia HAMILTON Public Relations and Events Executive Elevate PR Marketing & Events In the early days of my study I was given a simple, yet powerful piece of advice: just say yes. As terrifying as this was, it pushed me out of my comfort zone and into a number of amazing experiences like being a news reporter at the 2011 Rugby World Cup. I quickly learnt that communication was the path for me. I won a number of top student awards, was named on the 2012 Massey Business School Dean s List and selected to participate in the Massey Business School internship programme, which led to full-time employment as the Communications Advisor at Sport Manawatu. From my role at Sport Manawatu, I have since moved to Brisbane where I work as a Public Relations and Events Executive for Elevate PR Marketing & Events. I have found my niche and created my own role specialising in corporate conference management and internal communications. I love my job and thoroughly enjoy the variety of clients and conferences that I work with. Elevate is an amazing company with a great team and an endless growth of new clients and opportunities. The BC s business and humanities mix was a main attraction for me and particularly unique. There aren t many universities that offer such a variety of study areas and flexibility under one degree. I enjoyed being able to study linguistics alongside PR/communications and not being restricted to just one industry. It helped me keep perspective on the scope and volume of learning available and an open mind in terms of where I wanted to take my career. I think the mix also allows future employers to see you ve had a range of learning experiences and explored different interests.

7 06 DURATION 3 YEARS FULL-TIME OR EQUIVALENT PART-TIME ALBANY*, MANAWATŪ*, WELLINGTON* DISTANCE LEARNING * Some planning advice may be required EXPRESSIVE ARTS An arts major or minor of the BC If you love theatre and performance, but want to ensure you have broader career prospects, possibly in the corporate world, the major in expressive arts is for you. QUALIFICATION OVERVIEW As part of your study, you will be able to take part in and lead theatre and digital video productions. You will learn the hands-on skills of acting, directing, managing productions, scripting, storyboarding, creative writing, and video filming and editing. You will also learn how these fit into the everyday activities of a professional communication practitioner and the leadership skills necessary to effectively manage people. For example, you might produce a music video, or direct an experimental multi-media show. You might be immersed in the techniques of improvisational theatre, including games and spontaneity activities, as a way to unlock and manage your creativity across other media including creative writing. You might find yourself devising word-at-a-time stories with team members, or learning how your posture communicates a status instantly to others. CAREER OPPORTUNITIES Surveys have shown that today s employers seek graduates who can give compelling presentations, problem-solve creatively, think originally, analyse perceptively, communicate effectively (both in person and on paper) and work well in teams. Learn these skills through expressive arts. When combined with the communication and corporate skills that you learn through your Bachelor of Communication you will have a qualification that can be applied across an amazing range of roles. Graduates with an expressive arts major are working today in: > > Arts publicity > > Human resources > > Advertising > > Marketing and public relations > > Television and journalism > > Teaching > > Theatre and entertainment > > Creative and professional writing. nwhitney NUKU Māori Communications Advisor NZQA No two days are the same in my role as the Māori Communications Advisor for the New Zealand Qualifications Authority. One day might involve coordinating, designing, editing and proofing publications on Mātauranga Māori for an academic audience, while the next might be spent planning promotion and activities for Māori Language Week. I m required to be both professional and creative in my work, so although a lot of what I do is varied from what I studied, the blend of business and humanities from the Bachelor of Communication has been complementary to my role. Exposure to many forms of art and expression gained during my degree has had a huge impact on the way I work. My creative writing skills help me to take a boring policy paper and turn it into an interesting read for whānau. My experience in media practice helps when producing videos, like ones that help parents and grandparents understand NCEA. My knowledge of the creative process not only guides my own ideas, it also helps when working with others to bring out the best of everyone s ideas. My boss trusts my artistic and creative judgement and gives me the freedom to colour outside the lines of my organisation s usual approach.

8 07 DURATION 3 YEARS FULL-TIME OR EQUIVALENT PART-TIME DISTANCE LEARNING LINGUISTICS An arts major or minor of the BC If you love language and want to broaden your career options, the Bachelor of Communication (Linguistics) offers the best of both worlds. You ll also uncover the underlying structures that shape our understanding of language and communication in settings as different as boardrooms, newsrooms, chat windows and living rooms. For example, you might examine murderers text messages, provide a commentary for a sports match, construct an alien language, listen to global hip-hop to track the influence of African-Americanisms, and observe people talking to dogs. The BC (Linguistics) gives you enhanced language skills for both the social and professional worlds. You will gain an understanding of the functions of language and the cultural implications of how we communicate through the media, socio-political and legal contexts. SKILLS SOUGHT-AFTER BY EMPLOYERS You will learn transferable skills that employers seek your own personal excellent written and oral communication skills and an ability to understand the subtexts of communication from others and diagnose unintended effects or communication bottlenecks. GAIN A RELEVANT QUALIFICATION Massey University s linguistics major offers papers that specifically examine language in New Zealand and the Pacific, ensuring relevant, local context. Large technology companies seek graduates to work on natural language processing, speech analysis and data collection. Skills you will learn include: > > Analytical skills > > Logical thinking > > Ability to produce clear communication > > Ability to diagnose communication effects and processes > > Ability to advise on the role of specific language strategies as part of a broader communication strategy > > Ability to understand language structures at the root of all languages, not just English, thereby enhancing cross-cultural communication and foreign language learning. nrebecca FORREST Almost immediately after finishing my final paper (three weeks!) I flew out to Korea where I taught English for seven months. I worked with students aged between 6 and 17 years old. I taught comprehension, phonics, carried out testing and provided coaching for speech competitions. I worked alongside the head teacher and interviewed new foreign teachers. It was amazing to see the cultural components of the degree really come to light during my time at the school. A few weeks after my return to New Zealand, I got a job at a not-forprofit where I really got to put my communication skills to use. I wrote a brochure, engaged in website planning, edited policies, formal templates, wrote letters for publics and initiated the development of a quarterly newsletter to improve the organisation profile. I was at the not-for-profit just shy of six months before being approached by a private business. I was invited on board to provide internal management assistance to support business expansion. The role has been designed to rotate me through different areas of small business operations. It s going to be a lot of learning in a fun environment, for an industry I genuinely care about. I look forward to further building my skills and seeing where this opportunity takes me.

QUALIFICATION OVERVIEW In your journalism studies major, you ll build essential generalist journalistic skills and gain expertise in specialised fields, such as feature writing and investigative reporting. You ll also learn about the media s role through studies in media theory. I use social media measuring tools to track our social media statistics and Media Portal to monitor our media coverage. I compile a daily media brief of everything that has gone on in the media that day, which is distributed to the key stakeholders of the NZDF (ie the senior leaders), and have written a story for the Navy Magazine read by the wider Defence Force. I have had the opportunity to travel from Napier to Wellington on a Navy ship, wrangled media at the arrival and departure of the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge, and have sat in on a live CNN interview about the Royal New Zealand Air Force s role in the search for the missing airliner MH370. The opportunity for this job presented itself during my communication internship at Massey, which was an invaluable experience.

12 11 nadelaide MCDOUGALL Studio Manager Transistor Studios, New York I graduated from Massey in 2013 with a Bachelor of Communication majoring in media studies with a minor in public relations. Soon after I graduated, I flew to New York City to fulfil an internship at a fashion PR company called PR Consulting. Here I worked with brands such as Vera Wang, J Brand, Acne Studios and many others. During my experience I often found myself referring back to knowledge I gained at Massey, which I applied to writing press releases about designer shows at New York Fashion Week. I then moved on to a paid internship with Transistor Studios. Here my main responsibilities include assisting in shoots and filming, booking freelancers to assist us in the post-production of commercials and trailers, and contributing to creative discussion with clients. I was recently involved in a shoot for IMAX, and have previously worked on a Lupe Fiasco music video, a Ray Ban commercial and many other amazing projects. At the end of the internship, I applied and was successful in landing a full-time job as the studio manager! Film is my passion, so I am very excited to get this position. I wouldn t have gotten to this point without Massey. I learnt fundamental skills relevant to both the PR and media industry in New Zealand and overseas, which has prepared me to participate effectively in these companies. I WOULDN T HAVE GOTTEN TO THIS POINT WITHOUT MASSEY

The most memorable and influential experience I had at Massey was my international exchange. I travelled to Los Angeles to study at UCLA for six months. While there I worked as a graduate researcher for the UCLA Communication Department and I also interned for a Beverly Hills PR company, Fingerprint Communications. Fingerprint specialised in consumer and celebrity PR so I was able to meet and work with a lot of influential celebrity clients and brands. Accounts I interned on included the Air NZ Snoop Dogg/Rico video, Kardashian Collection, Oakley, and various other consumer and fashion brands. My degree in Communication has already allowed me to achieve many of my personal and professional goals. Through the practical paper offerings I was allowed to be involved in hands-on PR activity which gave me the invaluable experience that ultimately led to meeting my business idols and landing a job in a respected Auckland PR company. I was able to gain my degree without having to worry about trying to attend lectures that didn t fit with my filming schedule, and I still had support every step of the way. I really enjoyed and appreciated my study experience with Massey. Their systems made correspondence learning as manageable as possible. I could access the impressive library services 24/7, and helpful knowledgeable advice from the staff at the contact centre was only a phone call away. Acting is my dream career, it takes me all over the world and I m glad I was able to gain a degree that can open new avenues and expand my abilities. My BA gave me skills in analysing and understanding texts, which is incredibly helpful in what I do. At the moment, I am working on a television show in Sydney and one day I d love to be able to put my French papers to use and perform a role in French. I AM A PROBLEM- SOLVER I AM STUDYING THE BA

WHAT S IT LIKE? FOLLOW YOUR PASSIONS You will be encouraged to experience a broad range of subjects in your English major. There s plenty of choice when it comes to papers, and lots of opportunity to study what really interests you, from Gothic literature to health and science writing. WHY MASSEY? STUDY THE GREAT TEXTS AND WRITE YOUR OWN With a BA (English) at Massey, you can combine your love of literature with developing your own creativity. You will be taught by acclaimed authors who will both guide you through the exploration of poems, novels, short stories and theatre scripts, and encourage your own creative talent. BECOME A STRONG COMMUNICATOR A Massey BA(Eng) will cultivate your empathy and prepare you for a versatile career. You ll learn to analyse different audiences, which will help you understand how best to communicate with them. You ll learn how to take information, pull it apart and present it in a way that makes sense a fundamental skill in any work environment. In your BA (English) you ll focus on these very processes. GET ONE-ON-ONE TEACHING At Massey our teaching is centred on you. Our lecturers are awardwinning teachers and researchers who will give you individual feedback every step of the way. Our combination of English studies with arts-based fields, such as speech writing and media studies, will expand your learning opportunities and future career prospects. CAREER OPPORTUNITIES Follow your passion into a profession where critical thinking and communication skills, fresh perspectives and new ideas will be highly valued. Employers appreciate flexibility and the ability of BA(Eng) graduates to reason, research, analyse, criticise, communicate and think laterally. They need people who can thrive in an ever-changing labour market and who will be able to effectively challenge and critique new encounters. Our BA(Eng) will develop your interpersonal, communication, critical thinking and problem-solving skills to ensure you remain agile and able to take on the opportunities the future holds. Through your study of English you will build a valuable and rich set of skills. You will then be able to explore any number of career paths, including: > > Writer, editor, publisher or researcher (for social media, literature, theatre, film and television, corporate, government or non-profit organisations) > > Communicator (for a cause, a consultancy or organisation) > > Academic or teacher > > Arts administration or management > > Arts policy and development > > Speech writer, travel writer, blogger. WHERE DO I START? Introduction to English Studies This paper considers the nature and functions of literary texts and the ways in which they are invested with meaning. The paper will focus on the practice of reading literary texts, and the processes of writing critically about them. Or Introduction to Literary and Cultural Studies By studying a selection of notable literary texts, students will learn to recognise their characteristic features, gain some sense of historical and cultural factors relevant to the study of literature, develop skills in close reading, and develop their own ability to respond in written form.

20 19 ALBANY (MINOR), MANAWATŪ (MINOR), WELLINGTON (MINOR), AND VIA DISTANCE LEARNING LINGUISTICS A major of the BA LANGUAGE MAKES US HUMAN Language feeds into every aspect of our being from the way we greet one another, to the thoughts that process in our minds and the words that fill our Facebook news feed. It is in essence, what makes humans human and different from any other animal species. WHAT S IT LIKE? Language is part of our everyday lives, yet how much do we actually understand about how it works? Linguistics is the study of language, its structure and meaning, how it is learnt and used, and what this says about who we are and where we come from. WHY MASSEY? CULTIVATES PERSONAL AND PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT From interacting with friends to communicating with colleagues, language plays a fundamental role in both our public and private lives. With a strong focus on personal and applied language use, ethnographic analysis, and language forms and structure, Massey s linguistics programme will develop vital career skills. These include written and spoken communication, problem-solving, and social and cultural awareness. In addition, our lecturers will encourage you to develop a deeper understanding of your own self-identity and social interactions. SIGNIFICANT TO YOUR ROLE IN THE ENGINE OF THE NEW NEW ZEALAND As the new New Zealand emerges, language remains the most powerful tool for connecting with and understanding our evolving diversity of people and cultures. Studying linguistics will equip you with the knowledge and empathy to lead cross-cultural interactions, growing your ability to drive social change and shape the future of our nation. SPECIALIST LANGUAGE STUDIES AND OPTIONS Whether you re intrigued by the role of language in forensic situations, digital communities, social media, mother-tongue maintenance, or second-language learning, we have a variety of papers on offer. Our papers are taught by lecturers who are leading in a range of distinctive research areas. WHERE DO I START? You can begin your major by taking 100-level papers in a number of subjects like language studies, communication, and culture. We don t offer all our 100-level papers every year so make sure you choose papers on offer the year you want to start your major. CAREER OPPORTUNITIES Language is vital to human communication. The study of linguistics helps you understand the development of language and can lead to an array of careers. We have graduates working in a range of diverse sectors in many varied roles including: > > Education: ESOL teacher, language teacher, literacy advisor, university lecturer > > Business, administration and law: communications advisor, interpreter/translator, forensic document analyst > > Government departments: policy analyst, researcher, cultural adviser, immigrations officer > > Publishing, journalism, media and advertising: writer/editor, advertising consultant > > IT: computer analyst/programmer. nsonja ZANDER BA Linguistics Student Mba éichapa or hello in Guarani, a native language spoken mainly in Paraguay. Last year as part of my bachelor s degree I was lucky enough to earn credits while investigating this interesting language. On top of this I ve looked at forensic linguistics and also studied how babies learn to talk. I m majoring in Linguistics, something that I am passionate about. Linguistics allows us to consider an aspect of life constantly used but overlooked by most people; language. Linguistics focuses on how a language works and what you can tell from the way a person speaks. Luckily for me Massey lets me study by distance learning because I ve been living in Argentina for three years, giving me the opportunity to see many of the theories I ve learnt put into practice. Everywhere I travel I find myself listening to other people talking and guessing things about their language.
