1 The of Texas at Dallas vs. CHESS TEAM November 5, 2010 Opening ceremony: 12:30 p.m. Match: 1 to 3 p.m. The of Texas at Dallas Davidson Auditorium, School of Management Room 1.118
2 Welcome! As the Executive Director of the United States Chess Federation, it is my sincere pleasure to welcome all of you to the fifth installment of this historic series between The of Texas at Dallas in the United States and the in Serbia. It brings me great joy when chess is used as an instrument to bring people together from all over the world. The competition is always fierce, but it also is a chance for us to celebrate the sport that we all love. With this technological triumph in international competition, UT Dallas and the continue to be leaders for the world demonstrating what can be. I applaud both of these fine institutions for all of there efforts to reach out to these young people and to each other via this important match. These efforts will have a long lasting impact on the lives of these participants, and thus the world s future as well. As a chess player, I personally look forward to following this match and the future matches, and I appreciate the model for competition that has been formed here. Thank you, Jim Stallings and UT Dallas, for promoting this event and for establishing a model program for collegiate chess. To all, good luck and good chess! Regards, Bill Hall Executive Director United States Chess Federation U.S. Chess Federation P.O. Box 3967, Crossville, TN Phone: Fax: Greetings everyone: Once more, we are pleased to present our annual fall chess match for The Transatlantic Cup! In this fifth year, talented competitors from The of Texas at Dallas chess team will take their seats across the boards from the equally gifted team members from the of Belgrade in Serbia. No matter what the final count is on the 16 boards, the prevailing theme has always been the high level sportsmanship and conduct demonstrated by both teams. The match has afforded viewers a special treat with its 16-board format most chess teams have only four boards. With the rapid rate of play there is more than enough fog of war to keep one guessing as to what the final outcome will be. Chess involves intense calculation, but do not be misled. Emotions run high and must be channeled. Opponents are all too human and do not play with the cold analytical detachment of computers. Our team roster s academic focus is as eclectic now as it has been in prior years. UT Dallas chess team members major in applied math, business administration, economics, molecular biology, psychology and statistics. This reflects the intellectual diversity and wide range of academic pursuits of the larger student body. At UT Dallas, innovation, collaboration and a multidisciplinary approach will help us become one of the great universities of the world. The chess team focuses on one match at a time, just as the is creating its future, one Aha! moment at a time. Moving toward national research university status requires a long-term strategy as we enter a new era of ascendancy and national recognition. Chess is one of the oldest and most intellectually challenging games in the history of mankind. It s no wonder that it represents the intellectual investment focused on the achievement of our students. Follow the match as our leaders of tomorrow match wits with their opponents! Best regards, Tournament Director: Franc Guadalupe Match begins at 1 p.m., November 5, Open to the public. The Davison Auditorium of the UT Dallas School of Management. Time control is 40 minutes per player plus 5 seconds incremental time per move. The match will last about 1 1/2 hours total. James A. Stallings Director, Chess Program Special thanks go to the Internet Chess Club (ICC) for their time and effort to host this event and to promote intercollegiate chess. Without their services and contribution, this match would not be possible. To follow the match live, go to chessclub.com in advance and get a temporary account.

8 UT Dallas Online Chess in Education Certificate Educators are constantly looking for ways to improve students concentration, raise test scores and add variety to the classroom environment. One of the most powerful and fun methods for accomplishing these goals is to take UT Dallas chess in the classroom courses. Studies in K-12 classrooms have shown a correlation between chess instruction and an increase in reading and other cognitive skills. At UT Dallas, we help educators realize all that chess has to offer in the classroom environment. Whether by our top rated chess team, chess club or online graduate and undergraduate classes, we provide the tools teachers need to reach their goals. The Chess in Education Certificate is an online course sequence of two for-credit, three-hour undergraduate or graduate courses. About Chess I... Chess I is designed for elementary teachers who wish to use chess examples to help students understand concepts in reading, math and problem solving, and chess teachers who wish to incorporate additional academic and humanistic curriculum goals. Instructor: Dr. Alexey Root. ED 4358: Chess I - Using Chess in Elementary Schools (undergraduate) ED 5344: Chess I - Chess in the Elementary School Curriculum (graduate) About Chess II... Chess II is designed in consideration of the cultural role of chess as a combination of game, art, sport and science using the interdisciplinary methods of the arts and humanities. This course also will explore practical resources available from local and national chess organizations, foundations and associations for teachers introducing chess into their classrooms. Instructor: Dr. Alexey Root.
