1 Volunteerism for Peace, solidarity and sustainable development International Voluntary Service Projects INTRODUCTION UVIKIUTA would like to welcome you to participate in the International volunteer service projects in Tanzania. The program is prepared to provide a unique, challenging and fulfilling experience not only to the volunteers but also to the host communities. We see this program as a vital part of the overall learning experience, learning and sharing positive participation. UVIKIUTA is a Youth development and non-profit organization established in 1983 to respond to the needs of young women and men to raising living standards through developing and enhancing social and economic capacities. We are the founder member of EAWA Network (Eastern Africa Work-camps Association), 2015 International Volunteer Program (Revised 6 th March 2015) Page 1
2 Partner of Service civil International-SCI, Network, Partnering with volunteer sending and hosting organization in 24 countries around the world some been members of NVDA, ALLIANCE and CCIVS. We have been working as well very closely with UNDP-UNV in Tanzania country office. 3.0 INTERNATIONAL WORKCAMPS International volunteer s work camps are a unique kind of cultural exchange program involving Volunteers and communities. It offers a powerful vision built on our belief that volunteers in Partnership with community members have a vital role to play in development and in building a more just and sustainable world community. The program is a tool to demonstrate that living and working together as well as sharing knowledge is not only possible but rewarding. In the work camps we see the possibility of volunteers and the hosting communities exchange experiences, and thus gain in-depth knowledge of other social, cultural, political environments and living conditions. 3.1 General Condition for Participation in UVIKIUTA-Tanzania Work camps a) Age: Volunteers must have passed his/her 18 th birthday before the day of sending application. There is no age limit. Senior volunteers and families are encouraged to join. Younger volunteers can be accepted provided that they are accompanied by their parents/guardian. b) How to apply: Application will be received through sending organization in the country of volunteer s resident at least four weeks before the project start. Application form should be accompanied with scanned copy of passport (personal details page) and signed Participation agreement (See attachment at the end. c) Number of volunteers and duration: Each team of work camp volunteers will have composition of maximum 20 Volunteers including Tanzanian volunteers and 2 project leaders. Most work camps will run for 2-3 weeks with few of four weeks. No limitation of numbers of volunteers coming from the same country/organization, male or female. d) Language: Official Languages of the work-camps are English and Kiswahili e) Meals and Accommodation: Accommodations in most projects are Youth hostels, Guest houses, community house/building, School dormitories, and tents or mixed of the above. Food will be provided as well only at the project location. f) Insurance: UVIKIUTA will provide no insurances for the volunteers. g) Visas: UVIKIUTA will provide an invitation letter on request as soon as the application is confirmed. However it is recommended that; volunteers prepare all necessary documents to obtain visas themselves. 3 4.0 LONG AND MEDIUM TERM VOLUNTEER- LMTV PROJECTS Long and medium term volunteer project involve individuals or groups of volunteers join up to live and work together a project brought forward by a local community. This is a personality-building and self-discovering experience. It is a journey not only through the geography of our planet, but also a journey through the many cultures. The program brings together volunteers from different cultures and backgrounds to promote mutual understanding and lasting peace through practical actions. 4.1 General Condition for Participation in UVIKIUTA-Tanzania LMTV Projects a) Age: Volunteers must have passed his/her 21 st birthday before the day of sending the application. There is no age limit. Senior volunteers are encouraged to join. b) Motivation: Volunteers should be interested in volunteer work, open minded, flexible, and interested in culture and conditions in Tanzania c) How to apply: Application will be received through sending organization in the country of volunteer s resident at least three months before the project start. Application form should be accompanied with scanned copy of passport (personal details page), motivation letter and signed Participation agreement (See attachment at the end) d) Duration: Volunteer can stay in the project for a minimum of eight (8) weeks maximum six months, provided that the placement is available. e) Language: Official Languages of the projects are English and Kiswahili f) Meals and Accommodation: Volunteers will be placed in the host families. Meals and accommodation will be provided in the family for the entire period of the project. g) Insurance: UVIKIUTA will provide no insurances for the volunteers. h) Visas: UVIKIUTA will provide an invitation letter on request as soon as the application confirmed. However it is recommended that; volunteers prepare all necessary documents to obtain visas themselves. 4 5.0 GROUP WORKCAMP AND OTHER SPECIALISED PROJECTS This category includes volunteers or participants who are not able to participate in either work camps or MLTV for various reasons. This may be University and high school students, families, seniors, volunteers with disabilities/special needs, companies, groups with common interest etc. 5.1 General Condition for Participation in UVIKIUTA-Tanzania Work camps LMTV Projects a) Age: No age restriction. However participants or volunteer under the age of 18 should be accompanied by parent or authorized guardian. b) Motivation: A clear description from Partner or the group should provide enough details describing the motive for the team to travel and volunteer in group. This should include short description about group background, objectives and expectations. c) How to apply: Application will be received through sending organization in the country of groups resident at least three months before the project start. Application letter should be accompanied with scanned copy of passports of the team (personal details page), motivation letter and signed Participation agreement for each individual member (See attachment at the end). d) Duration: We are very open about the starting dates. However the duration should be known three months before the team travel to Tanzania. e) Language: Official Languages of the projects are English and Kiswahili f) Meals and Accommodation: Accommodation will be organized according to the needs of the group. However possibilities could be host families, Youth hostels, Hotel, school dormitories etc. g) Insurance: UVIKIUTA will provide no insurances for the volunteers or the team h) Visas: UVIKIUTA will provide an invitation letter on request as soon as the application confirmed. However it is recommended that; volunteers prepare all necessary documents to obtain visas themselves. The main goal of the project is to help children develop cognitively and socially introduce them to the school setting and prepare them for Primary school education. Through early childhood education, children gain long-lasting academic and social benefits that will benefit them throughout their lives.. Type of Work: Academic skills development: To assist Children to develop academic skills on literacy, mathematics, science and even social studies. Physical Development: To support the children to learn about moving - demonstrates basic gross motor skills, demonstrates basic fine motor skills. Cognitive Development: To assist children learn about the world - sustains attention, understands how objects can be used, shows a beginning understanding of cause and effect, shows a beginning understanding that things can be grouped, uses problem solving strategies, engages in pretend 2015 International Volunteer Program (Revised 10 th March 2015) Page 6

Social development: To support the children about self and others - trusts known, caring adults, regulates own behavior, plays with other children, learns to be a member of a group, and uses personal care skills. Language development: To learn about communicating - develops receptive language, develops expressive language, participates in conversations, understands and uses words, enjoys books and being read to, shows an awareness of pictures and print, experiments with drawing and writing. Accommodation: Volunteers will be accommodated in the local Youth hostel. 2-4 volunteers will share room. Participants will be required to carry own mosquito nets. Over the years it has grown to be a broad, global platform for public outreach that is widely celebrated by stakeholders in over 100 countries. In Magole community, the event has been celebrate almost every year bringing local community, Private sector and civil society to celebrate the biggest day for positive environmental action. Type of Work: Volunteers will participate in management of botanical garden, tree distribution and planting. Other activities will include organizing activities for the WED 2015 like workshops, school debates and sports bonanza as a mean of implementing the campaign. It aims to ccontribute to the empowerment of young women and women through improved educational facilities. Poor education facilities including the learning environment has been one of the factors contributing to poor performance hence hinder the possibility of managing development challenges like unequal rights, a lack of awareness of rights, low literacy rates, dependency, limited access to education and opportunities to earn a living, and poverty. Your time, skills, and ideas can help build solidarity and support for young women and men of in their pursuit of healthy and sustainable livelihoods. Type of Work: Volunteers will be involved in renovation of school buildings and painting. In supporting the greening school campaign volunteers will participate as well to provide garbage separation facilities and composting. Depending on the weather; volunteers will also plant trees and beautification activities in the school. Accommodation: Volunteers will be accommodated in the school dormitory. 2-4 volunteers will share room. Participants will be required to carry own mosquito nets. Volunteers wishing to arrive earlier or Camp code: TZ.UV.1507 Extra Fees: 250 Starting date: 22 nd June 2015 End date: 4 th July 2015 Project Name/Topic: Empowering communities through education Work/Type: RENO-EDU Total Volunteers: 15 Tanzanian Volunteers: 5 Location: Pemba-ZANZIBAR Number for each Nationality: 4 Maximum Disabled Volunteers: Accepted Description: The project is organised in cooperation with the department of Youth development in Zanzibar. It aims to ccontribute to the empowerment of young women and women through improved educational facilities. Leisure: Possibilities are so many including spending time in the beach swimming, tour to various Islands, Eco and cultural tourism (Including spice tour), historical sites etc. Accommodation: Volunteers will be accommodated in the community residential house. 2-4 volunteers will share room. Participants will be required to carry own mosquito nets. Kitchen staff will be available through out to support volunteers in preparing the meals. outdoor activities, manual work, construction, painting and Nature. Volunteer should be as well interested in culture and work under limited resources. Approximate Location: The Work camp will take place in Pemba Island. It will take about 6 hours by boat to rich the Island. There are comfortable boats connecting Dar es Salaam and Pemba via Zanzibar. However they are not daily. Volunteers will travel as one team from Dar es Salaam after the orientation. Tanzania, Orientation at the UVIKIUTA Youth Hostel, food and accommodation during the work camp. The fee also contributes to the running of activities taking place during the work camp and communication prior to the camp. Volunteers wishing to arrive earlier or staying longer at UVIKIUTA Hostel will contribute 15 per day to cover the cost of meals and accommodation. Due to distance to Pemba Island and requirement for foreigners to pay more, volunteers should be reminded that we will cover only cost of one way trip to Pemba and return trip by the volunteers. 14 Camp code: TZ.UV.1508 Extra Fees: 250 Starting date: 28 th June 2015 End date: 17 th July 2015 Project Name/Topic: Eco Kids Work/Type: KIDS-ENVI Total Volunteers: 15 Tanzanian Volunteers: 5 Location: Chamazi-TEMEKE Number for each Nationality: 4 Maximum Disabled Volunteers: Accepted Description: The Eco village is situated in Magole a place of very best of current thinking on sustainable human settlements. Within the Eco village, sustainable values are expressed in the built environment with ecological houses, innovative use of building materials such as local bricks, beauty in the architecture and gardens. Sustainable values are also expressed in the community's social, economic and educational initiatives. This project is organised in Partnership with the neighbouring schools and members of the Eco village. The main goal of the project is to help children develop cognitively and socially introduce them to various environmental realities. The project will focus on the children from the age of Type of Work: Preparing activities aiming to teach children about basic ecological issues trees, animals, insects, garbage separation and composting etc. Children and volunteers will participate in tree planting activities in their schools and help to create environmental clubs for schools which does not have. The project is also focusing to make series of video shows, sports and game at the community centre to stimulate discussions between volunteers children and their parents on environmental sustainability. Accommodation: Volunteers will be accommodated in the local Youth hostel. 2-4 volunteers will share room. Participants will be required to carry own mosquito nets. Kitchen staff will be available through out to support volunteers in preparing the meals. working with Children, interest in Nature, creative and ability to work under limited resources and less supervision. Approximate Location: The Work camp will take place in Chamazi, about 45km South of Dar es salaam. Volunteers will be picked up at Julius Nyerere International Airport, Dar es Salaam. Tanzania, Orientation at the UVIKIUTA Youth Hostel, local transport to the work camp, food and accommodation during the work camp. The fee also contributes to the running of activities taking place during the work camp and communication prior to the camp. Within the Eco village, sustainable values are expressed in the built environment with ecological houses, innovative use of building materials such as local bricks, beauty in the architecture and gardens. Sustainable values are also expressed in the community's social, cultural, economic and educational initiatives. The project is aiming to expose volunteers and local community to people from different cultural, religious, geographic and socio-economic backgrounds and in so doing provide the opportunity for all to develop a greater understanding of diversity. For over ten years now the project allows the volunteers to interact with and learn from people who are different from themselves and to participate in new and unique experiences beyond their own communities. Cultural exchange assists everybody involved to develop positive relationships with others, understand a broader range of perspectives, and develop the knowledge and skills needed for participation in our multicultural society. Type of Work: Volunteers will be involved in number of activities leading to exposure; Kiswahili Language, cooking classes, home stay, drumming and dancing classes, arts and craft. Accommodation: Volunteers will be accommodated various host families in the eco village to allow them to share the daily life with local Tanzanian families. It is expected as well based on the number of the volunteer to have counterpart pairs which mean Tanzanian volunteers will be mixed with foreigners to provide support during the experience. Meals will be provided as will within the host families. Requirements: No special or particular expertise/skills required, however a potential volunteer should have; an interest on cultural issues, interest to lean new language and way of doing things, outgoing, creative. It aims to ccontribute to the empowerment of young women and women through improved educational facilities. Poor education facilities including the learning environment has been one of the factors contributing to poor performance hence hinder the possibility of managing development challenges like unequal rights, a lack of awareness of rights, low literacy rates, dependency, limited access to education and opportunities to earn a living, and poverty. Your time, skills, and ideas can help build solidarity and support for young women and men of in their pursuit of healthy and sustainable livelihoods. Type of Work: Volunteers will be involved in renovation of school buildings and painting. In supporting of the greening school campaign volunteers will participate as well to provide garbage separation facilities and composting. Depending on the weather; volunteers will also plant trees and beautification activities in the school. Leisure: Possibilities are so many including spending time in the beach swimming, tour to various Islands, Eco and cultural tourism (Including spice tour), historical sites etc. Accommodation: Volunteers will be accommodated in the community residential house. 2-4 volunteers will share room. Modernization did not only impact the traditional medicine systems but the entire life styles of many people. There have been a lot of difficulties in regaining indigenous practices and knowledge to reverse the impact of modernization. The fact that the indigenous knowledge is not documented it makes it easy to be forgetting from one generation to another. This project is organised in Partnership with Marera village- Environmental group in Kilimanjaro, Northern Tanzania with aim of re-storing indigenous knowledge on medicinal plants. 19 Camp code: TZ.UV.1513 Work/Type: ENVI-HEALTH Starting date: 20 th July 2015 End date: 15 th August 2015 Project Name/Topic: Health and Environment: Our sustainability Extra Fee: 200 for Tanzania Phase for Kenya Phase Total Volunteers: 20 Number for each Nationality: 4 Maximum Tanzanian+ Kenya Vols.: 8 Disabled Volunteers: Accepted Location: Moshi-Kilimanjaro (TANZANIA), Naivasha (KENYA) Description: This project is organised with Partnership with villages located in the sloops of the Mount Kilimanjaro. Most of this community are sharing boarder with the forest and there is big dependency on this important conserved forest. Most people in these communities are usually work in agriculture mostly grow coffee, bananas and other food crops. A big number of families still have traditionally cooked their meals on the ground in the house over an open flame. As a traditional house usually has only one room, the whole house is filled with smoke before and after meals. The smoke is thick and stays in the house as only a little hole in the roof allows for ventilation. As a result, acute respiratory and eye diseases are a significant problem for women and children. Additionally, this traditional form of cooking requires large amounts of firewood, which puts pressure on the Mount Kilimanjaro and is thus a major contributor to climate change. Type of Work: This is a project of 4 weeks to rotate within two Eastern African Countries (Tanzania & Kenya). In Tanzania phase volunteers will be working with local women to build and install simple energy serves stoves in their households. Additional activity will manage the community tree nursery. In the last two weeks of the project in Kenya, volunteers will be working in The Kikuyu Escarpment forests a home to a number of globally and regionally endangered bird species and act as an essential source of water for the surrounding settlements. Activities will include forest rehabilitation through nurturing seedlings in tree nurseries and planting trees in deforested areas. A number of Workshops on environmental awareness to schools and the local communities will be facilitated. Leisure: Possibilities are Safari (Lake Manyara, Ngorongoro and Tarangire National park), Eco and cultural tourism around Marangu and Kilimanjaro National Park area, tour to Moshi town etc. Accommodation: In Tanzania Volunteers will be accommodated in the community residential house. 2-4 volunteers will share room. Participants will be required to carry own mosquito nets. In Kenya Volunteers will be hosted at Osotua Lodge and Campsite. The campsite is located in a beautiful setting at the Maasai settlement of Namcha-Maai Mahiu at the floor of the Great Rift Valley. It has ample ground to pitch tents, a number of comfortable bandas, (cottages) with modern toilet and shower facilities. outdoor activities, physical manual work, and Nature. Volunteer should be as well interested in culture, environment, travelling and work under limited resources International Volunteer Program (Revised 10 th March 2015) Page 19
20 Approximate Location: This project will be hosted in two countries (Phases) of two weeks each. The first phase will be in Moshi, Kilimanjaro (Northern Part of Tanzania) and the second phase will in NAMCHA, Nakuru County, and Central Kenya, hosted by our Partner- Kijabe Environmental Volunteers (KENVO). All volunteers will be picked up in Dar es Salaam airport for orientation before moving to the communities. Remarks: International participants are required to pay an extra fee of 200 Euros to participate in the First phase in Tanzania and the same amount for the participation in the second phase in Kenya. The fee covers pick up from the airport or bus station upon arrival in Tanzania, Orientation at the UVIKIUTA Youth Hostel, food and accommodation during the work camp. The fee also contributes to the running of activities taking place during the work camp and communication prior to the camp.
