The datacentre industry, which is a component of the wider outsourcing industry, continues to fare comparably well to the economic instability of recent years. This is corroborated by two key factors: the first being the ubiquitous use of Information Technology in all aspects of personal life and in the corporate arena which requires ever expanding data storage and processing infrastructure and secondly, leasing colocation space can be anticipated to be adopted as a far more financially feasible alternative to building and operating a private datacentre. This is particularly pertinent in the prevailing economic climate where cost control and cost-control are on-trend buzzwords. It is the very versatility of leasing colocation space that lends itself as a prudent cost-cutting strategy in terms of datacentres, although the analysis and decision should be studied way beyond the cost factor. Science believes every problem can be solved with a mathematic equation. At IXcellerate, we have attempted our own universal solution to approach the problem in trend: [F (R+M+T)] x C = S F: Facility R: Risks M: Money T: Time C: Control & Security S: selecting the right provider When considering colocation, each element in this equation should be looked carefully and thoroughly and selecting the right provider is crucial. Here are two essential questions you should ask: For a full analysis on each element in the equation mentioned, please see the whitepaper Outsource or Insource: A Mathematical Approach Download it here: IXcellerate.com 1. How feasible is it to build your own private datacentre? What are your immediate and future needs and requirements? What are the reasons to own your own datacentre? With those factors in mind, however, does leasing still make a compelling case? 2. What differentiates your colocation provider in a competitive market on the following key factors: management experience (in both local and global markets), financial stability, connectivity and scalability, customer-focus, location, technology expertise, facility design and power, control and security? It is sufficient to say that given the critical role that data, Big Data in many cases, plays in any organization that selecting the right colocation provider must be approached with caution. Depends on an organization s own needs, each of these categories provide different advantages but the trend in the industry has shown that many believe carrier-neutral datacentres is the way forward. We prefer our carrier-neutral model at IXcellerate as it offers focus, flexibility and choice. A carrier-neutral datacentre such as IXcellerate Moscow One Datacentre, is normally the most well connected site in its respective market, with unbeatable scalability that grows with market demand. Carrier neutral datacentres play a similar role to major airport hubs. In the same way as multiple airlines interconnect and offer access to any destination, the carrier neutral datacentre acts as a hub for many carriers and service providers, providing choice and resilience. Such colocation providers can satisfy the needs of a client from a single rack to large requirements, taking prime locations where power is available in abundance both now and in future to offer tailor-made datacentre halls accordingly while offering security and low latency links to and from other global markets. Working in extreme temperatures such as Moscow s brings its own challenges from fuel polishing to variable winterization control for environmental systems. The professional team such as the one behind IXcellerate Moscow One Datacentre has decades of combined experience in datacentre design and operation including almost 25 years of technical operations in the Russian market. There are more barriers than one can imagine while trying to enter a completely new and highly complex market such as Russia. Risks are mitigated partnering with a management team comprised of telecoms and datacentre veterans bringing Western retail datacentre operation experience to open the door to such an enormous Internet market under high ethical standards. International Data Centre Group Vol SCIENCE: the SOLUTION to EVERY PROBLEM 06 IXcellerate is a data centre company founded by Guy Willner (Founder and former CEO of IXEurope, former President Europe for Equinix Inc.), and Cliff Gauntlett (Former SVP of Golden Telecom). 5 The impetus behind IXAfrica s conception is (as with all business ventures) a constellation of opportune circumstances. The specific set of circumstances listed below have formed the basis of launching the IXAfrica data centre in Kenya: 1. Deregulation of the telecommunications industry The Telecommunications Act of 1998 outlined phased deregulation of the telecommunications industry as the incumbent s (Telkom Kenya) monopoly status was protected by an exclusivity period that lapsed in Following 2004, despite Telkom Kenya s monopolistic status being revoked and the subsequent entry of competitors, other constraints persisted as accessing international and local bandwidth at competitive prices was severely hindered by Kenya s dependence on expensive VSAT (Very Small Aperture Terminal) satellite technology. But with the landing of submarine cables in 2009, investment in local fibre networks followed which put downward pressure on local and international bandwidth pricing. Wholesale bandwidth costs fell from US$ 1,500 per Mbps to US$ 100 per Mbps. This was a critical development in formenting the right conditions to set up a carrier neutral data centre because customers must be reassured of competitive bandwidth pricing or else collocating in a commercial data centre becomes a financially unviable option compared to collocating in house. IXAfrica will build and oper- ate a state of the art, vendor neutral data center to serve a broad spectrum of clients - telecom carriers, ISPs and peering points, IT and cloud providers, content providers and corporates. The company will begin operations in 2014 and create a highly connected data centre hub for Kenya and East Africa, located in a building in central Nairobi. IXAfrica will differentiate itself from providers of hosting services by being the first independent data center business to focus solely on co-location services (space, power availability licenses and physical interconnects). NAI RO BI TERCONNECTION: the KEY to FRASTRUCTURE DEVELOPMENT Adrian was appointed as Operations Director of Gibtelecom, Gibraltar s leading telecommunications company, in With the company continuing to grow internationally as an international communications hub, Adrian s main responsibilities are the Company s resources, resilience and network infrastructure functions. In fact over the last decade, GibTel has invested 25% of its revenues in technology and infrastructure, allowing for new and exciting possibilities in the international market and enhancing its portfolio of tailored communications solutions. 2. Rise in density of fibre networks Undisputably, deregulation coupled by latent demand for reliable domestic and corporate broadband, were key drivers in attracting significant investment towards the development of telecommunications infrastructure. Dark fibre was launched by Kenya Data Networks (KDN) in 2005, followed by Kenya Power and Lightning Company (KPLC) in 2009 and the government backed National Optic Fibre Backbone Infrastructure (NOFBI) went live in In parallel, local operators were rolling out their own fibre networks to link the various metropolitans in Kenya, including Kenya Data Networks (KDN), Jamii Telkom, Soliton and Orange. The rapid roll-out of networks was and continues to be driven by the need to distribute the international capacity landing in Mombasa via the submarine cables. The density of connections has been another key piece in building the case for a commercial vendor neutral data centre because a vendor neutral data centre requires, by definition, various network providers to be present in the market to provide connectivity and also the presence of several network providers enables clients to have resilient connectivity. 3. The rise and rise of cloud services Demand for cloud services/virtualisation is growing and paradoxically, rather than reduce demand for data centres, as is conventionally thought, virtualization drives demand for physical data centre space because cloud services require a data centre as a platform. Adrian Moreno Operations Director GIBTELECOM Aside from these specific set of opportune circumstances there is the macroeconomic view which remains very positive. Not an insignificant player is the Kenyan government which has outlined plans to increase its expenditure on ICT ten-fold from 0.5% to 5.0% of the national budget. And this has been the inspiration behind a vendor neutral data centre. SPIRATION: the BEGNG of VENDORNEUTRALITY International Data Centre Group Vol GIB RAL TAR

Cover Story GIB RAL TAR Q Despite the global economic crisis, Gibtelecom continues to grow. To what do you attribute the Company s success in tough times? Gibraltar, in sharp contrast to the struggling financial situation being experienced by most of Europe, continues to achieve impressive levels of economic growth. With competitive tax regimes, a strong regulatory regime, and the appeal of a Mediterranean location the territory attracts some of the world s leading financial services institutions and e-gaming companies. Gibtelecom is seeing growth annually too - certainly not as big as it was a few years ago but not reducing by any means. As you will imagine, operating in a territory the size of Gibraltar has its challenges, including a limited local market and unfavourable economics of scale. However, in a world that is becoming increasingly reliant on the availability of round-theclock, high speed communications, Gibtelecom has successfully been at the forefront of developing networks and infrastructure that ensure the growing needs of the business and wider community in Gibraltar are met. Together with a focus on providing international connectivity on a global scale, this has allowed the company to offer a portfolio of managed connectivity solutions to its enterprise customers, providing robust national and international communications. We are lucky that Gibraltar is strategically located at the entrance to the Mediterranean, with strong links to both Europe and Africa. Q What do you see as the key growth areas for the Company? With the growth in internet and mobile applications and services, more companies are relying on the web to operate in a global marketplace, with resilient connectivity at the heart of any e-business model. With this in mind, we are in sync with technology as well as in touch with our customers. Continuous development across all our networks will facilitate this growth in over-the-top and multimedia services. Additionally, we offer a range of tailored enterprise solutions providing fixed, mobile and internet services, as well as being the largest data centre provider on the Rock. Gibtelecom has moved into the data centre business in a big way, building suites catering for growing demand. The Gibtelecom difference is that we try to sell tailored solutions, so not just services and capacity. We try to interconnect customers to anywhere in the world and consequently are focused on both developing our technical capabilities and growing the global carrier businesses to improve connectivity, diversity and resilience. Q How has the Company developed its data centre business? The datacentre business as we know it today has changed much since we set up the first dedicated centre some seven years go, but as the market needs changed developing this part of the business became a natural move. Gibtelecom s datacentre development plans are very much aligned to customers business and IT strategies, as well as their specific regulatory and industry requirements. For example, the facilities are Payment Card Industry (PCI) compliant -- an essential factor for many of our customers due to the large volumes of financial transactions they process. Our aim is to be the customer s partner of choice by ensuring that its datacentres have the right technical set-up, connectivity, security and environment to meet market requirements. This requires a focus on understanding customers needs within the industry, which relies on constant investment in infrastructure and highly skilled technical staff who understand the complexities of the latest IT systems. Q What has this development meant in terms of infrastructure? In terms of infrastructure this development represents significant investment for the Company. Dedicated premises have been transformed and developed to house circa 700m2 of purpose-built hosting space, built to the highest standards. The facility is supported by an on-site 2MW electrical substation, 24/7 monitoring and CCTV together with the latest technologies for cooling, standby power and security. This includes A&B UPS feeds and Generator backup operating with an N+1 configuration. All of the suites operate HSSD, particle detection and fire suppression systems, alongside stringent environmental monitoring for temperature and humidity comprised of cold-isle, hot-isle and under floor detection systems. Q With a lot of your customers being in the e-gaming and financial services sectors, what challenges does this create? Catering for some of the most demanding ecommerce businesses in the world has resulted in Gibtelecom creating a robust international network in Gibraltar. In a global business environment state-of-the-art hosting facilities need to be paired with seamless and resilient connectivity. This was the impetus for the Company being one of the founding shareholders of the Europe India Gateway (EIG) consortium. The EIG system is a 15,000km high bandwidth fibre optic submarine cable spanning from London to Mumbai. The cable system runs across three continents and has thirteen landing points along the way, of which Gibraltar is one. As well as providing linkages to other international cable systems, the cable complements Gibtelecom s other terrestrial and sea links, connecting to hubs in London, Madrid and Marseilles. Q What other opportunities is Gibtelecom considering? We are quickly gaining ground in the global carrier business, which complements its local operations. With the development of this new business positioned firmly in the company s growth plans, in 2011 Gibtelecom set up an international business unit to develop and seek new offshore growth opportunities. Following the substantial multi-million pound investment in the EIG system, Gibtelecom is now looking at new and exciting opportunities to further expand its international network and is exploring new routes and partnerships. Local investment also continues to grow as we prepare for a migration to a next generation network and consider introducing additional services such as IPTV and cloud computing. Q What do you highlight as your key competitive advantages? Despite the size of the territory, Gibtelecom provides a portfolio of products and services which compete with those of leading telecommunications companies throughout the world. The Company has been Recognised for Excellence by the European Foundation for Quality Management a testament to Gibtelecom s commitment to quality and to achieving the highest standards. In essence, Gibtelecom is a company that is big enough to do business, but small enough to provide real care and tailored solutions. Gibtelecom is Gibraltar s leading telecommunications company, providing international connectivity on a global scale. Existing customers include world-leading financial services and e-commerce businesses based in the territory. A portfolio of managed connectivity solutions caters for the Gibraltar-based customers by providing robust national and international communications. The Company offers a range of enterprise solutions providing fixed, mobile and internet services, as well as being the largest data centre provider on the Rock. In 2011, Gibtelecom set up an international business unit to develop and seek new offshore growth opportunities. Cover Story International Data Centre Group Vol

Features COLLABORATION: the FUTURE for TERNET EXCHANGES Internet exchanges have come a long way since the early nineties, when most of these platforms were formed. In the twenty odd years the niche industry of IP interconnection through public peering has seen a number of (r)evolutions. I purposefully use (r) as in some cases these changes were felt as revolutions and in others these were quickly embraced. Especially those with a business approach, forward-looking and open attitude saw fast growth. There are a number of key factors in the industry that are important for an Internet exchange in terms of viability and sustainability of the business: Fiber/sea-cable density - The geographic location of the exchange should be on/ close to major land fiber/sea cable routes Availability of carrier neutral data centres and colocation - both space and power No limitation due to regulation and licensing and an open economy A neutral and independent governance model that enables to build trust Sustainable growth model - A model that is built for future growth, that builds reserves for platform investments i.e. I do not believe in free models. Distributed infrastructure model - over several data centres - more neutral and choice for customers Professional business focus on service quality & customers Collaborative partnering capability - enabling the marketplace Low-cost offering - but again, future-proof Economies of scale - to decrease costs and maintain margin for future growth International orientation - this is for those that aim to be regional hubs, in that case act accordingly The most successful and world s largest Internet Exchanges are in Europe and all incorporate at least 80 % of the points above, if not more. There are over 50 IXs in Europe 1 alone but only a small handful can be said to be international hub locations, and they are within a few hundred kilometers of one another. From a business economics measure only a few operate above the average revenue level in the niche industry, which clearly gives an indication of the difference between the national exchanges and the international hubs. Same applies to other industry KPIs such as the amount of connected networks (ASNs) and traffic exchanged. Again there are only a few that operate above the 400 connected networks and 1,5 Terabit per second levels of traffic. AMS-IX - Amsterdam DE-CIX - Frankfurt LX - London At AMS-IX we focus on developing the e-economy and e-infrastructure that enables the growth of this economy, which in turn will grow interconnection needs and exchange activity. Apart from an Internet exchange in the e-infrastructure the e-economy needs other services to be successful, such as ISPs and IP transit, transport services, CDN, hosting and content players but also data centre operators and other complementary services: cloud platforms & services, social and financial platforms, security solutions, gaming and online creative communities. See the picture on the next page. 1 Source: Euro-IX database, Cara joined the company in 2003 and is responsible for the initial set up of the AMS-IX marketing department and has been responsible for executing the vision of the company in the commercial discipline since then. Before joining AMS-IX, Cara was a Senior Management Consultant with LogicaCMG Consulting (previously DDV Consulting) for 5 years. Prior to DDV she was employed by Global One in the role of Sales Manager and before that by France Telecom in the role of Product Manager Network Services. Cara Mascini CMO, AMS-IX These factors immediately reflect the several different exchange models there are. There are parties that aim to be a national Internet exchange in their country, serving the local market. They are important in the Internet economy in keeping local traffic local and costs low. Commercially owned exchanges often deal with the non-neutrality or conceived dependence and tend to see slower growth because of this. Many IXs in Europe are (owned by) non-profit organizations. Some are therefore limited in budget and governance rules, which can restrain growth, because fewer parties can join or limited hardware investments can be made. Others are run as businesses and re-invest any profits that are made and/or decrease prices when possible to stimulate growth. EU RO PE International Data Centre Group Vol

The e-economy is particularly well developed in Amsterdam and the Netherlands. The previous key success factors of the industry are all part of this e-economy. In fact AMS-IX Amsterdam plays a global role, interconnecting many different e-economies with one another and in effect playing an important role in enabling the global digital economy. We believe in the role of both international hubs and national Internet exchanges. Also we believe in the collaboration with other market parties such as transport providers and carriers. By supporting those to build their business we together built the marketplace. The collaborative reseller model for remote peering shows the success of this view; AMS-IX grew with over 100 new connected networks in 2012, which is over 20% growth in these rough economic times. And of course the data centres and hosting industry niches are complementary, by making AMS-IX easily available through partnerships, adding value to their product portfolio we grow the market together. Below left is the AMS-IX collaborative model for partnerships that shows our various market interactions. Under this partnership model AMS-IX started both AMS-IX Caribbean, previously known as CAR-IX, and AMS-IX Hong Kong. CAR-IX started as a for the good of the Internet project helping set-up a local exchange on Curacao in the Dutch Antilles to develop the infrastructure in that part of the Dutch kingdom. Now evolved into AMS-IX Caribbean and developing into a true regional hub. AMS-IX Hong Kong was the result of the reseller program and is a joint project with Hutchison Global Communications (HGC) meant to keep local traffic in the region rather than transporting it back and forth to Amsterdam. The exchange offer the best of both worlds, local peering in HK and the opportunity to peer in Amsterdam as an added feature. AMS-IX HK ultimately has the same potential as AMS-IX Amsterdam, all of the key success factors of the industry factors are apparent. To summarise, to be successful on an international scale exchanges need to focus on building their capabilities in the key industry factors. With special note to remaining independent and neutral but building a sustainable business. Collaboration will be key to enhancing these capabilities. FRONTIER MARKETS The Amsterdam Internet Exchange (AMS-IX), is one of the largest Internet Exchanges in the world. It was founded as a not-for-profit organization by the European Internet community back in the nineteen-nineties. Now interconnecting hundreds of networks by offering professional IP exchange services, also called peering services. Peering enables these connected networks to offer stable, fast and cost-effective Internet services to their end-users and business customers. Peering is what makes the Internet robust and resilient, a network of networks all linked together. AMS-IX Hong Kong AMS-IX Hong Kong was founded by AMS-IX and Hutchison Global Communication (HGC) under the AMS-IX Reseller Plus program. The AMS-IX Reseller Program specifically generates new connections to AMS-IX in Amsterdam. However in case that there are many parties from a particular region the unwritten rules of the Internet dictate that local traffic better stay local and a regional hub makes sense. Hence the Reseller Plus development where AMS-IX deploys an exchange mirroring the set-up in Amsterdam, a professional high quality and neutral exchange in a place where a regional hub has potential. AMS-IX Caribbean Since April 2013, the Caribbean Internet Exchange (CAR-IX) is an integral part of the AMS-IX environment and carries the name AMS-IX Caribbean. By being fully responsible for the management and operations of the peering platform, AMS-IX can coordinate all activities more closely, as a result work more efficiently and further contribute to the Internet ecosystem in the Caribbean area. In 2008, AMS-IX used its successful business model formula to help found CAR-IX in cooperation with the running minister as well as Bureau Telecommunications and Post at the Dutch Antilles. While AMS-IX was responsible for operating the technical platform, the members of the CAR-IX Association were responsible for the strategic direction. Features International Data Centre Group Vol

Features The United States and the world, for that matter have seen several iterations of Internet Exchanges (IX) over the years. A mainstay of interaction and interconnection for content companies and Internet service providers (ISP) since the founding of the Internet, these exchanges, or hubs, are crucial for the Internet to survive and thrive. The current landscape of the United States peering ecosystem evolved through mergers and consolidation to rest in the hands of just a few players: Equinix, Coresite (ANY2), TelX, and Terremark (now Verizon). These peering hubs, quite similar in concept to the modern-day airport hub system, are in major geographic markets including Atlanta, Ashburn, Va., Chicago, Dallas, Los Angeles, Miami and the Silicon Valley. Development in these markets was driven by access to core fiber, router infrastructure, undersea cables, and ultra-large server farms in single buildings or campus areas. While all of these existing IX companies provide great service and represent a good value for their services, the current arrangement places tremendous power and control in the hands of a few single companies. Many of the major ISP and content companies that rely on IX have found that the risk of using single-source vendors for their core interconnection needs is not something they are willing to maintain in perpetuity. Evidence of this can be seen in the Open Peering initiative in New York City, whose membership includes some of the country s largest content and ISP companies. The Open Peering initiative plans to issue a request for proposals for an operator and a facility where all members are to meet. Peering is also experiencing distinct pressure from the commoditization of the IP transit market. For many years, peering was a way to avoid the high cost of purchasing transit. Companies could peer away traffic to a destination autonomous system number (ASN) at an IX either by cross-connect (private peering) or on a common switch (public peering). With costs dropping for IP transit, yet remaining stable or rising for colocation, it has become a game of performance and traffic control rather than saving costs. This puts pressure on the IX to reduce costs, or in the best case to offer IX services at no cost. CyrusOne has taken this no-cost concept a step further with the launch of its Texas IX in March 2013, connecting Dallas, Houston, Austin, and San Antonio. The first statewide IX in the United States, the Texas IX links together four cities (Dallas, Houston, Austin, and San Antonio) using a multi-provider, multi-protocol label switching (MPLS) cloud, and optical waves. Doing so enables peering among many parties in various facilities and frees customers from the constraint of having to choose solely between telecom carriers housed within a specific physical facility, which is something that has been a limiting factor for alternative IX success in the past. The Texas IX makes it possible for enterprises to use the same infrastructure that Web-scale companies have used for years to connect hot-hot production environments in different facilities or disaster recovery facilities in different markets. Such a platform is unique and should be a game-changer for the interconnection world. In conclusion, peering in the United States faces market and vendor challenges, but with continued innovation and growth in the Internet through video and other services like Google fiber, it can continue to be a vital part of the interconnection industry and data man- NOVATIVE HYBRID : the VITALITY of DATA MANAGEMENT Josh, an Internet industry veteran, is currently vice president and general manager of Interconnection at CyrusOne. Whenever the current passes through the internal components of a UPS a certain amount of energy is dissipated as heat which results in energy losses. Additional energy is also consumed whenever the air conditioning operates to sustain the ideal environmental temperature of the installation. Whilst a certain amount of energy losses are inevitable, it is evident that the reduction of UPS power consumption and the consequent increase of its efficiency will significantly contribute to lowering excess energy waste, and in turn maximize the overall running cost-saving of the energy bill. The savings accomplished 24 hours a day, 365 days a year over a five year period, would not only equal the purchase cost of a UPS but it would also actively contribute to reducing CO2 and other global warming emissions, ensuring the lowest environmental impact of the chosen power protection solution. DATACENTRE CASE STUDY In order to demonstrate the real energy saving advantages and simultaneous first-class performances of Trinergy we have compared it to the functioning of current available standard UPS technology performance in a large data center application. Data centers depend on UPS to condition power and eliminate momentary outages, sags, surges, and other deviations from clean, inphase power so as to ensure the continuity and security of the network in which they operate. So where does the energy go? Before reaching the IT equipment rack, electricity is first supplied to the UPS where it passes through the internal components and is cleaned before leaving the UPS to directly power the data center. The electricity consumed in this power delivery chain accounts for a substantial portion of the overall energy used to power a data center. In a typical data center installation the conditions of the network and the electrical features of the load mainly vary depending on the amount of traffic, resulting in power fluctuations and hence presenting different electrical load conditions to be protected by the UPS. In the given electrical environment the UPS influences the upstream distribution via the input power factor (PF) and the Input THDi (total harmonic current distortion). These electrical characteristics vary significantly, between 0.8 and 0.9 and from 6% to 20% respectively for PF and THDi, according to the fluctuations of the load, i.e., causing problems of harmonics and reactive current, thereby requiring different levels of conditioning. The UPS plays a fundamental role in conditioning the current drawn by the load as this helps avoid the reactive current and harmonics reaching the power sources, and potentially causing problems on the upstream equipment and the entire electrical network i.e. over heating of the transformer, accelerated ageing of components, necessity for cable over sizing and higher installation and running costs. Today the standard UPS that are commonly used in data centers guarantee high power quality and conditioning by working in double conversion mode. The double conversion mode converts power from AC (input power) to DC and from DC to AC (output power) providing a perfect output waveform regardless of the input quality. The drawback of constantly working in double conversion mode, i.e. even when the disturbances are only minor, is the unnecessary dissipation of excess energy. The ideal power conditioning solution for data center installations would therefore be one that is able to intuitively condition the current and harmonics, using the lowest amount of energy possible. Trinergy is in fact capable of functioning in a distinct Digital Interactive mode where the inverter works as a parallel active filter and therefore compensates the load THDi and PF. At the same time, Trinergy can function as a series active filter to improve the input window voltage tolerances, in the event of sags or over voltages, with a remarkable overall efficiency of up to 98%. Should major power conditioning be needed or a particularly serious network condition occur, Trinergy is capable of immediately reacting and maintaining the best power output quality by working in double conversion. In conclusion, unlike the standard UPS, which works in double conversion mode regardless of the network conditions, Trinergy first monitors the environment operating conditions of the network before intuitively choosing the most efficient means of compensating disturbances, hence using only the necessary energy achieving a 4% to 7% greater efficiency than the standard UPS. Therefore guaranteeing a higher efficiency level while achieving the same high quality of power conditioning provided by the double conversion UPS. International Data Centre Group Vol A REAL STALLATION The exceptional advantage of Trinergy is that it is able to discriminate between the different network input conditions and choose the best functioning mode, thus using only the necessary amount of energy required to provide the best output power quality and conditioning to the load. To further understand the advantages deriving from this revolutionary architecture and to quantify the effective energy saving that can be obtained with Trinergy, a simulation of the different UPS technologies available on the market has been performed. The credibility of simulations is dependent on whether or not real network conditions are taken into account, for this reason we carried out an analysis of the network data measured by the LIFE.net remote monitoring and diagnostic service, a bidirectional, 24-hour year round communication system designed to remotely diagnose, monitor and manage the operational status of UPS and power distribution systems through its worldwide network. The data relating to the functioning of UPS in real network conditions corresponds with a sample of 2374 UPS monitored 24 hours a day, 365 days a year in the United Kingdom. A 12 month LIFE.net analysis carried out in 2008 proved that, on average, Emerson Network Power UPS protected organizations against: 2709 out of tolerance per UPS Out of tolerance average duration of 8 sec. 11 mains failures per UPS 120 sec. average duration mains failure All of which could prove potentially harmful to the load. The above results proved to be key when analyzed in conjunction with existing UPS technologies, made possible thanks to a dedicated simulator which was specially developed with a number of parameters including: network conditions, UPS architecture, efficiency, the UPS algorithm. Given the availability of the real network data and the indication of the architecture, the simulation was performed and the average working efficiency of the UPS functioning in each of the operating modes was calculated. At the same time the simulation took into consideration the input power, thus allowing it to obtain the total energy dissipation over a one year period. The average efficiencies achieved are reported in the table below and used in calculating and comparing the energy saving of the three different technologies Standard existing technology This typology of UPS with inverter transformer technology ensures efficiency at full load of around 92.5%. In a controlled environment installation with air conditioning, the energy dissipation at full load for one year is 8694 MWh. Best-in-class existing technology with eco mode This typology of UPS with eco mode and intelligent double conversion greatly improves the working efficiency of the system, allowing it to reach up to 97%. A UPS working in intelligent double conversion, has an average working efficiency of 95% resulting in an energy saving of 220 MWh compared to the standard existing technology thus providing a significant cost saving. Trinergy technology Trinergy s newest revolutionary technology architecture demonstrates extraordinary advantages. Given the different conditions affecting the load, Trinergy can intuitively choose the most convenient operating mode in order to use the lowest amount of energy while guaranteeing the perfect power quality and achieving up to 98% average working efficiency i.e. energy saving, cost saving and reduced environmental impact. 11 How different is the daily life at the host data center from your daily life at your data center? In Alliance IDC-G EnTEx EXCHANGE From left to right: Marius, Guy, and IXcellerate Datacentre Moscow during the exchange RUS SIA What is your experience with the host data center (what did you do during the exchange)? After a long overnight flight from Bucharest to Moscow we discovered winter was still dominating the vast capital city. This of course included the courtyard of IXcellerate, the newest data center built in a prime location in Moscow by Guy Willner and his team. We started with a short kick-in meeting with Mike Segal (Sales Manager), Yuri (Technical Engineer), and Guy. The first round of discussion included topics such as the local data center market, sales strategies and access to carrier networks in Moscow. Guy was just about to start the hand-over procedure so he suggested that we helped him build a snag list of the data center infrastructure. We continued with an introductory tour of the data center led by Mike. From the very first steps, we were impressed by the security procedures in place. Everything looked neat and well done. We were impressed by the Hi-Fog Mist System, which was powered by a 1MW electrical capacity. At lunch, Victor, the local Emerson representative joined us. We discussed about the DX (direct expansion) type of cooling equipment from Emerson, which is also currently being used by NXDATA. Marius took this opportunity to show Victor on a tablet the interface of the NXDATA DCIM system. Back to the IXcellerate site, we had another round of discussion with Yuri about the datacenter, from the advanced BMS systems to the M&E and cooling. Not so different, in terms of operational procedures and daily technical activities. One thing is that the Russian market is definitely booming, for instance, Mike had scheduled a meeting with a potential 100 racks customer. So there is a difference in terms of market demand. IXcellerate is going to be big, 6500sqm, whilst NXDATA is only 1000sqm. But from the operational perspective we are on common ground. What s new that has come out of this experience? We appreciate the opportunity to discuss with engineers from the IXcellerate technical team about datacenter monitoring systems. At NXDATA we are now developing an in-house built DCIM system. It was extremely interesting to see a system used at IXcellerate which is built by Computrols. We were also impressed by the quality of piping and cabling work in the entire data-center. We could apply some of the security technologies and procedures we saw at IXcellerate in our own at Bucharest. We would like to thank the IXcellerate team for their hospitality and also Guy and the IDC-G team for offering us the opportunity to participate in this exchange. 12 In Alliance In the meanwhile Main One Johnnie Coleman (CTO) and Gbenga Adegbiji (General Manager - Capital Projects) visited Teraco Data Centre in Johannesburg, South Africa on the IDC-G EnTEx program in February, The aim was to meet the Teraco technical team and share ideas on design, construction and operations of a Tier III colocation data centre facilities. From left to right: Marius, Guy, and IXcellerate Datacentre Moscow during the exchange SOU TH AFRI CA DAY 1 We were introduced to the senior operational management team led by Gys Geyser and discussions on data centre design parameters and assumptions were held. We were then conducted round the facilities with the Operations Manager who provided detailed explanations on the design and interworking of each components of the Data Centre. Stulz (Pty) Limited later made a presentations on the various options of cooling solutions they can provide to Main One. DAY 2 A presentation was made by the Head of Operations on the operational processes and procedures and discussions were made on the various aspects of the operations, looking at the similarities and differences between our two operational environments. Another presentation was also made by the Head of Marketing on service ordering and provisioning of customers requests. DAY 3 We returned to Cape Town where we were scheduled to meet our design consultants with the feedback from Teraco for possible design modifications to the Main One Tier III data centre being designed. The feedback to the design team necessitated a re-visit to Teraco and approval was given for the design team to come back to Johannesburg on Friday 1st March, The entire design team (including architects, electrical engineer and mechanical engineer) were again conducted round the facilities on Friday 1st March 2013 and all design questions were favourably answered. It turned out to be all that we needed to round up and conclude on our Data centre specifications and design. The Teraco team was warm, open and very welcoming. They shared everything with us and were ready to provide support anytime we needed one. The reception and support provided was incredible. Resources were allocated for our logistics and everything was provided that we needed while we were there. Some of them had to stay longer than usual hours just to ensure our transportation to and from the hotel was not impaired. The exchange with Teraco was great, and thanks to IDC-G for organising such a platform of interaction. It turned out to be all that we needed to round up and conclude on our Data centre specifications and design. The visit helped us to firm up our design assumptions in some areas while provided a new dimension to our views on other areas. It also provided a platform for both sides to interact and share information on many aspects of data centre design and other operational considerations. It is good to know that we belong to such a group of professionals where we can all leverage each other s idea, facilities and operational experience to benefit member organisations.
