3 ABOUT THE SCHOOL OF THE ARTS Located in downtown Hamilton, School of the Arts offers an intensive training program for students interested in the visual or performing arts. Students select a major in Visual Design or Performing Arts. Within Performing Arts, students are asked to pick an area of focus in dance, music or theatre. All of the arts programs are focused on college and career preparation. Students at School of the Arts are pushed to exercise independence and thoughtfulness, as we focus on getting students ready for any challenge put in front of them. Our academic and career-technical classes are all delivered in a blended (online and in-person) environment with highly qualified teachers who make the most of current technology to create a truly individualized educational experience. School of the Arts is a fun and creative place in which students thrive and build supportive, professional relationships with faculty and their peers. 4 ACADEMICS & COLLEGE PREPARATION ACADEMICS Students attending School of the Arts will complete all core academic courses needed to fulfill their home school graduation requirements. All core academics are taught by on-site teachers at School of the Arts and are all college preparatory courses. Junior year academics have an ACT prep focus, while senior level courses are more project-based and structured to mirror the academic expectations of college courses. There are opportunities for dual enrollment (college credit bearing) courses. All academic and career technical courses involve an online component the expectation is that students will have several hours to dedicate to schoolwork outside of the school day. Students receive a laptop for use both at school and home during their time at School of the Arts. Internet access at home (or ability to work in locations where access is available) is an essential part of a student s ability to stay on track. COLLEGE FOCUS Though we do not expect that all of our students will enter School of the Arts with a clear college/future plan, we do expect that all of our students will leave us with one! We have a full-time college counselor who works with students on the application process, including support around the financial aid application process and exploring various college options. If you have not yet thought about college as an option, that s fine we are here to help you identify which path is best for you and to support you in your efforts to follow that path! 5 DID YOU KNOW? If you re looking for an education that goes beyond the classroom and gives you an opportunity to do what you love, then Butler Tech School of the Arts is the place for you! Butler Tech offers career-technical education for high school students. In addition to the programs and electives at your home high school (the school you currently attend), we have four standalone campus locations where students attend full time for both junior and senior year. Our stand-alone campuses offer diverse, exciting environments, with an emphasis on college and career preparation. Each location combines students from all of the home high schools within our district, including: Colerain, Edgewood, Fairfield, Lakota East, Lakota West, Madison, Middletown, Monroe, New Miami, Northwest, Ross and Talawanda. Students from other districts within the State of Ohio may also be considered please contact your guidance office for more information. Your high school diploma will be from your associate school district. You can participate in both your home high school graduation and School of the Arts graduation celebration. You can still play sports and participate in after school activities at your home high school. You can still attend homecoming and prom and other events at your home high school. Your home high school will provide bus transportation to School of the Arts or you can purchase a parking pass and drive your own vehicle. Most of our students go directly into college upon graduation. 74% of students in the class of 2014 chose to enroll in a two-or four-year college/university You will receive the preparation needed to enter a BA or BFA program in the performing arts or fine arts/graphic design. You must apply and be accepted into School of the Arts. Acceptance is based on specific criteria, including passion (as demonstrated through an interview) and credits earned by the end of sophomore year. Apply online at You will work hard. 6 PERFORMING ARTS The Performing Arts program at School of the Arts covers the broad spectrum of career opportunities available within the field of Performing Arts. Students receive a base-level exposure to all areas within Performing Arts and are asked to specialize in one focus area for deeper training. All Performing Arts students will take Business of Arts and Communication and one required course in their major area, in addition to at least two additional courses from the Performing Arts pathway in order to complete their program. All students are members of Skills USA and will earn a minimum of 4 credits in their career technical area over the course of the two year program. PERFORMING ARTS AREAS OF FOCUS: DANCE- Students pursuing Dance at School of the Arts will explore different styles of dance, including jazz, tap, musical theatre, lyrical, partnering and hip hop. They will participate in strength and flexibility training and learn about the careers and influence of notable dancers and choreographers. MUSIC (ROCK!)- Students pursuing Music at School of the Arts will be part of a program that has a focus in rock, jazz and popular music. Technique courses are focused primarily on guitar, bass, drums, keyboards and vocals. THEATRE- Students pursuing Theatre at School of the Arts will be exposed to all aspects of technical theatre as well as the acting performance side of theatre, with specific opportunities to explore Musical Theatre. PERFORMING ARTS COURSE DESCRIPTIONS BUSINESS OF ARTS AND COMMUNICATIONS (Required for All Performing Arts Students) A growing number of professionals make a living in industries related to arts and communications. From event management to tracking expenses, students learn the business side of visual, media and performing arts. Topics include marketing, branding, producing, promoting, booking, budgeting and merchandising, etc. Students learn and apply intellectual property rights, licensing, copyright, royalties, liabilities and contractual agreements. They learn how both profit and non-profit organizations businesses operate. ACTING PERFORMANCE (Required for All Theatre Students) Meeting expectations of the casting director and audience is critical to any successful performer. This course focuses on maximizing an actor s physical and emotional expression, vocal intonation, memorization and imagination to convey stories and feelings. Whether spoken or sung, stylistic identity is reinforced. Other topics include material selection, developing a score of action for a role, sustaining a character and self and peer critique. DANCE (Required for All Dance Students) Performing arts directors and choreographers look for a dancer to have technical strength, preciseness and an ability to engage audiences. In this course, students develop physical stamina and fitness, musicality, expression and sequence retention while learning terminology for dance movement and for the industry. Through solo, ensemble and improvisational movement, they interpret and communicate stories and feelings. Self-discipline, including emotional and nutritional health, are reinforced. 6. 7 PERFORMING ARTS MUSICAL CONCEPTS (Required for All Music Students) From warm up skills to complex rhythmic and technical passages, students combine theory and technique to sing or play at least one musical instrument. They recognize different harmonic, rhythmic and melodic structures based on culture, era and style. They write, read and understand musical symbols. Other topics include scales and mode studies, dictation, transcriptions and. Students provide and receive performance critiques. ACTING AND SCRIPT ANALYSIS This course combines understanding of the relationship between actor and script. Students research major theatre genres and influences, breaking down a script to discover objectives, obstacles, tactics and character development. They create a script with scenes, plot points and characters. They learn acting techniques, including imagery, personal associations and inner monologue. They perform a role within an original or established piece of work. CHOREOGRAPHY The choreographer designs steps and routines. In this course, students critique choreographed works from multiple dance genres. Using this knowledge and research as well as understanding specific characteristics and movements of dance, they compose sequences into their own designs. They alter choreography in solo and/ or ensemble work. They work with dancers to maximize aesthetic appeal for the audience while helping them manage physical and psychological demands of a performance. COSTUMING AND MAKEUP This course focuses on character design specific to makeup and costumes. Students research, render and produce masks, hats, dresses and other attire. They apply actor makeup and choose wigs or hairstyles aligned with a production script and/or purpose. Factors influencing character design are story line, director concept, relationships among characters, character movement, color and stage lighting. MUSICAL ENGINEERING Students put music theory and basic music skill into practice as they engineer sound for live and recorded production. They create, capture, edit, mix and synchronize music into audio and video tracks of various formats. Topics include acoustics, reflection, absorption of sound and reverberation. Students create products based on research of audience sensitivity and need and do so in compliance with laws related to intellectual property and competition. MUSIC ENSEMBLE AND COMPOSITION In this course, students compose music and perform in groups. They sight read music, blend and balance ensemble instrumental and/or vocal performance and respond to cues with an understanding of stage presence and choreography. They score an original musical piece using notation and sequencing software. Talent and self-confidence is strengthened through practice, social interaction, self/peer critique and performance. MUSICAL THEATRE The troupe member with abilities in music, dance and acting has triple threat value in musical theatre. In this course, students assume the roles of singer, instrumentalist, actor and dancer as well as director, stage manager, set designer and/or costume technician. Students learn to take and give orders to accomplish tasks. They analyze historical and current-day exemplary models of musical theatre for story line, musical arrangement and audience appeal. 8 PERFORMING ARTS PERFORMING ARTS CAPSTONE (does not count in the minimum of 4 required Performing Arts courses) Students apply Arts and Communication program knowledge and skills in a more comprehensive and authentic way. Capstones are project/problem-based learning opportunities that occur both in and away from school. Under supervision of the school and through partnerships, students combine classroom learning with work experience to benefit themselves and others. 9 VISUAL DESIGN The Visual Design program at School of the Arts covers the broad spectrum of career opportunities related to Visual Arts and Graphic Design. Students receive base-level exposure to all areas within Visual Design and emerge with a portfolio that can be used in job interviews and in the college application process. All Visual Design students will take Business of Arts and Communication and three additional courses in the pathway, in addition to completing a senior year Capstone project in their preferred visual medium. VISUAL DESIGN COURSE DESCRIPTIONS BUSINESS OF ARTS AND COMMUNICATIONS A growing number of professionals make a living in industries related to arts and communications. From event management to tracking expenses, students learn the business side of visual, media and performing arts. Topics include marketing, branding, producing, promoting, booking, budgeting and merchandising, etc. Students learn and apply intellectual property rights, licensing, copyright, royalties, liabilities and contractual agreements. They learn how both profit and non-profit organizations businesses operate. VISUAL CREATION A keen eye for detail, art elements, design principles and styles of art are essential to the world of visual communications. Students learn proper composition with such principles as color theory, typography and drawing. They create designs targeted for the Internet and for two-or-three dimensional products while adhering to copyright laws and deadlines. DIGITAL PRINT DESIGN Starting with understanding target audiences, demographics, product shelf life and sustainability students create designs for two- or three-dimensional products. Using workflow processes, they lay out newsletters, posters, business cards and other products. They create logo and package designs for corporate branding, marketing and advertising. Critical thinking is engaged in multiple-level critiques. PHOTOGRAPHIC COMPOSITION Aesthetics and techniques are essential to producing a good photograph. This course focuses on capturing and manipulating images in digital photography with some skill development in darkroom film processing, printing and enlarging. Topics include camera functions, mechanics of image capture, image manipulation, and print production. Students shoot photographs in various studio and indoor and outdoor settings. 11 HOW TO APPLY To attend School of the Arts, students must apply and be accepted. Interviews will begin in January. On site interviews will be held on Saturday, January 24 from 10am-2pm and Thursday, January 29 from 5-8:30pm. To schedule an interview appointment, please call the school at ext. 0. Applicants who apply prior to February 1 will also have the opportunity to interview at their home school applicants applying after that date may be asked to schedule an on-site interview at School of the Arts if the interview date at their home school has passed. Our primary admissions criteria is passion for the arts, as demonstrated in the admissions interview. Significant credit deficiency could prevent admission, as credit recovery opportunities are limited. TO APPLY: 1. Late applications may be accepted until programs are full. 3. Your associate school counselor will be notified to forward the necessary records to Butler Tech. 4. Applicant interviews will be scheduled and conducted at associate schools by Butler Tech staff. 5. You will be notified by mail regarding your acceptance status by early April.* *Late applicants will be notified upon acceptance/denial. ENROLLMENT REQUIREMENTS: Contact your High School Guidance Counselor for specific information about enrollment in a Butler Technology and Career Development Schools program. Potential students are required to meet the enrollment criteria as set forth by the Butler Technology and Career Development Schools Board of Education. PROGRAM COSTS: All students will become members of a SkillsUSA. The fee is $25. TRANSPORTATION: Associate school districts provide bus transportation. Students may also drive their own vehicle.
