47 Earthquake Predictions Professor Okan Tuysuz, director of the Eurasia Institute of Earth Sciences at the city's Technical University has gone on record stating that there is a 65% probability that Istanbul will be hit by a 7.6 earthquake by 2030 Professor Okan Tuysuz quoted as stating at worst, a 7.6 quake in the Sea of Marmara could hit 40% of the city, affecting up to 5 million people (Disaster Report, 2013) Dogan Kalafat, who is in charge of monitoring at the Earthquake Research Institute at Bogazici University believes the next large earthquake will hit near Istanbul, predicting a 75% chance that a magnitude 7 event will occur within 40 years (Segawa, 2012).
