Two billion smart phones and many more GPS sensors are active today. What if we equip all cars, ships and aircraft with environmental sensors? How can we gain knowledge from all that data? How can we find the needle in this big digital haystack? In real-time? Visual analytics, the science of analytical reasoning facilitated by interactive visual interfaces, can be a key enabler to tackle this challenge. In this keynote Luciad shares its vision that with the right data architecture, analysis tools and visualization capabilities, any user can be turned into a powerful analyst who can make sense out of today s mass amounts of geo-enabled and temporal data. Frank Suykens is the Chief Technology Officer at Luciad. He has been leading the development, roadmap and strategy of Luciad Products for over 10 years and is responsible for all research at Luciad. 9 SEPTEMBER 30 SPEAKERS PLENARY HALL :30 M. YAVUZ OKUR Technical Lead, DAS Implementation Office, NATO Communications and Information Agency Componentisation of C4ISR Systems The session outlines the NCI Agency/DAS approach for componentisation of C4ISR systems and re-use concept within the Bi-SC AIS projects. Componentisation is one of the implementation strategies to define the method, processes and tools to support the Systems Engineering of complex software systems into smaller, reusable parts. Geospatial visualisation is an important functionality for each C4ISR system and its conceptual architecture will be briefly mentioned in the briefing. M. Yavuz Okur is a Principal Scientist at the NATO Communications and Information Agency. DR. CAROLINE LOWE Principal Engineer, Network Rail Transforming Asset Management through Geographical Information Systems (GIS) GB railway is the oldest in the world with the national network forming in the 1840s. Asset management is a real challenge; some of the infrastructure dates back to Victorian times. Over the last 20 years passenger numbers have doubled and we are now at a record high. In response to this challenge NR is transforming the way we do business. Our workforce is changing from a traditional heavy engineering company to a modern enterprise with a desire to exploit technology. Vast sets of data collected over many decades are now being exploited through data mining and statistical analysis. But one of the key changes is the utilisation of Geographical Information Systems both for display and analysis. This presentation will outline 2 recently developed GIS systems: The first provides tactical information for those maintaining Over-Head-Line equipment across the network. The second is used to help define strategic investment decisions to improve the weather resilience of the network. 12:00 Dr Caroline Lowe is a principle engineer within the Safety Technical & Engineering Directorate at Network Rail HQ in Milton Keynes, UK. Following a mathematics degree at Manchester University she worked for almost 10 years as an academic at the College of Aeronautics (Cranfield) and the Department of Applied Mathematics & Theoretical Physics (Cambridge). ZALIDIS Scientific Coordinator, i-bec Studios Precision Farming and Agriculture: ibec Luciad Soil variability defines the diversified ability of soil to provide the plants with the water and nutrients they need. Zones with different soil characteristics can be defined with the use of Earth Observation data. The response of the plants to cultivation management is expected to follow the pattern of this soil zoning. This can be verified by measuring selected plant indexes as is the thermal stress of the leaves as a result of the irrigation management. In this context, the image editing and visualisation performance of Luciad Lightspeed were leveraged for assessing cultivation management. The application developed aims at the dynamic visualisation of the status of the cultivated crop as well as the outcome of the zoning management. In this talk, three people will discuss their experiences with integrating LuciadRIA in different web application frameworks. Glenn Croes (Luciad) will discuss LuciadRIA-Sharepoint integration, Christian Mohr (SAP) will talk about LuciadRIA-SAPUI5 integration and Tom Mahieu (Luciad) will address the integration of LuciadRIA in the Common Map API. Each case illustrates different geospatial visualization needs and requires a different integration approach. LuciadRIA s rich feature set and adherence to open standards, among others, contributed significantly to a swift and effective integration. 11:15 Dr. Tom Mahieu is an R&D Manager within Luciad s Technology department, with over 15 years of professional experience in software development. He holds an MSc and Ph.D. in Computer Science from the Katholieke Universiteit Leuven, where his research focused on distributed computer systems and computer networks. At Luciad, he focuses on Rich Internet Application technologies and the development of the LuciadRIA product. ANDREW WILS Project Leader, Luciad Studios Big, bigger, biggest: Geospatial big data with Hadoop and LuciadLightspeed What is geospatial big data? How do you interact with it? When and how can you use Hadoop? And what about LuciadLightspeed? In this talk we ll explore some interesting use cases where we interact with large geospatial datasets to answer the above questions. We ll take a cab in the Big Apple, explore what s happening in the world, and analyze Dutch highway traffic. Andrew Wils received his PhD in computer science in 2007, after working in the research group on distributed systems and networks at the KULeuven university. At Luciad, he quickly became a LuciadMap GXY view expert, adding multi-threaded rendering and modernizing the controller functionality. ANDRES VAN SWALM CEO, UniFly Studios SkyBridge, the management platform which enables the safe integration of drones into the aviation system The usage of drones in our airspace is expanding rapidly. In addition to this, drones are too small to be detected by traditional air traffic control radar systems, which are currently used to safeguard our airspace. Therefore drones form a real threat not only for the safety of manned aviation but also for the overall security and safety of the public at large. A management system allowing a safe integration of small drones into the aviation network is urgently needed. This where UniFly created a solution, called SkyBridge. SkyBridge is a software platform that allows the integration of low flying drones into the aviation system while guaranteeing an equivalent level of safety in comparison with manned aviation. Andres Van Swalm started his career in 2004 as military officer in the Belgian Air Force. He worked as Tower and Approach controller on the military Aerodromes of Koksijde and Beauvechain. In 2012 he cofounded Flight Plus, a Belgian consultancy company providing dedicated services to the manned and unmanned aviation community. Flight Plus is also specialized in ATM (Air Traffic Management) related matters and more specifically in Unmanned Aviation Systems. Recently he co-established a new limited company called UniFly. The primary goal of UniFly is to facilitate the safe integration of drones into the aviation system, and this by creating a software platform that allows the safe integration of low flying UAS. This system is called SkyBridge. _ SPONSOR SPOTLIGHT UNIFLY SkyBridge the solution for the safe integration into the aviation system The usage of UAS (Unmanned Aircraft Systems) in our airspace is expanding rapidly, drones are too small to be detected by traditional air traffic control radar systems, which are currently used to safeguard our airspace. If this situations continues without an intervention, these UAS will form a real threat not only for the safety of manned aviation but also for the overall security and safety of the public at large. A management system allowing the safe and secure integration of UAS into the Low Level aviation network is urgently needed. This where UniFly created a solution, called SkyBridge! 18
