1 The Netherland-America Foundation AMBASSADORS AWARDS DINNER in collaboration with Holland on the Hill Thursday, May 18, 2017 The Mayflower Hotel Washington, DC honoring Gabrielle de Kuyper Bekink Dick Boer Loek de Vries Fly World Business Class Held for the Benefit of the Netherland-America Foundation, Inc. klm.us Under the patronage of Her Royal Highness Princess Margriet of the Netherlands and Professor Pieter van Vollenhoven

2 Welcome from the Ambassador Friends of the Netherland-America Foundation and Holland on the Hill, For over 400 years, the Netherlands and the United States have enjoyed a strong bond based on the shared values of freedom, justice and entrepreneurship. To highlight these shared values, the Netherlands Embassy in 2014 launched Holland on the Hill, a collaboration of the U.S. Congressional Caucus on the Netherlands, corporate partners and the Netherland-America Foundation. In many ways, Holland on the Hill amplifies the work of the Netherland-America Foundation to promote the ties our two nations share. Tonight s Ambassadors Awards Dinner is just one example of those efforts, a time when we come together not only to celebrate our ties, but also to honor people who personify them. Mr. Dick Boer, president and CEO of Ahold Delhaize and recipient tonight of the Ambassador K. Terry Dornbush Award, also received the Holland on the Hill Heineken Award earlier today, to honor his entrepreneurial spirit, his efforts to further U.S.-Netherlands economic ties, and his sustainability initiatives. Based in the Netherlands, Ahold Delhaize is a world-leading food retailer. The Heineken Award is named after the late Freddy Heineken, who was sent to the United States in the late 1940s and established the Heineken brand overseas. Upon his return to the Netherlands, he used the innovative marketing skills he learned in the United States to transform Heineken into one of the world s most recognized brands. Tonight, we also have the pleasure to honor Mr. Loek de Vries with the Ambassador J. William Middendorf II Award and Mrs. Gabrielle de Kuyper Bekink with the Ambassador C. Howard Wilkins Jr. Award. These awards carry the names of the former U.S. Ambassadors to the Netherlands who markedly contributed to the furtherance of amity between the Netherlands and the United States. I want to thank the Netherland-America Foundation for co-organizing tonight s dinner, and for promoting the strong bond between our nations throughout the year. Sincerely, Ambassador Henne Schuwer 1

6 Holland on the Hill Savings since For over 400 years, the Netherlands and the United States have been joined by values of freedom, justice and an entrepreneurial spirit. Holland on the Hill strengthens these historical ties on an economic, political and cultural level while focusing on the US Congress. Holland on the Hill is a joint project of the Netherlands Embassy, the Netherland-America Foundation, the Congressional Caucus on the Netherlands and the Netherlands business community. Anchored by two key annual events the Heineken Award for captains of industry in the spring and the Anne Frank Award for human rights leaders in the fall Holland on the Hill s yearly programming also includes lectures and roundtable discussions, as well as receptions and dinners on topics that are relevant for the Trans-Atlantic relationship. The Holland on the Hill Heineken Award honors an entrepreneur who has made a substantial and positive contribution to the U.S.-Dutch economic relationship, exemplifying the best of both worlds. Chosen by an awards committee, the recipient is an innovative industry leader who combines entrepreneurial drive with a transatlantic focus. The award embodies the spirit of Freddy Heineken, whose grandfather founded in 1864 the brewery that bears the family name. Freddy Heineken began working at the brewery in 1942, when he was just 18 years old, but failed to prove himself to management during his early years on the job. Uncertain what to do with the young man, management sent Freddy Heineken to the United States as the sales manager. The new job was perceived as a dead-end career move because the company had sold little beer in America and had few plans for expansion. But Freddy Heineken proved them wrong, increasing U.S. sales 260 percent in his first year abroad. He continued using innovative marketing skills he learned in America and transformed the Dutch company into one of the world s most recognized brands. The Holland on the Hill Anne Frank Award honors an American person or organization that has confronted intolerance, anti-semitism, racism or discrimination while upholding freedom and equal rights, in order to promote the effective functioning of an open, pluralistic and democratic society. The recipient is chosen by an awards committee. The award embodies the spirit of Anne Frank, who was forced into hiding during World War II and who penned her worldwide famous diary 75 years ago. In it, she sets forth her desire for a world void of discrimination. While in hiding, Anne s only window to the outside world afforded her a view of a beautiful chestnut tree. That chestnut tree, which she wrote about in her diary, was eventually felled by a storm. Eleven of the saplings taken from that famous tree were destined for planting in the United States at locations selected to carry on Anne s legacy. One of the saplings is planted on the West Front Lawn of the U.S. Capitol. Hendrik Meijer saw a need, and opened his first grocery store in 1934 focused on serving families in a small Michigan community during the Great Depression. Today, Meijer grocery supercenters can be found in five states throughout the Midwest. In 80 years, our capacity to serve the needs of families has grown to 150,000+ items across 40 departments. And our philosophy and commitment to family and community has grown even stronger. After all, we know what it s like to take care of a family we are one. CONGRESSIONAL CAUCUS ON THE NETHERLANDS co-chairs Bill Huizenga (R-MI) Derek Kilmer (D-WA) The caucus aims to strengthen ties between the United States and the Netherlands and includes these Representatives: Michael Capuano (D-MA) John Carter (R-TX) Doug Collins (R-GA) Jim Costa (D-CA) Joe Courtney (D-CT) Lloyd Doggett (D-TX) Eliot Engel (D-NY) Elizabeth Esty (D-CT) Rodney Frelinghuysen (R-NJ) Mike Gallagher (R-WI) Glenn Grothman (R-WI) Daniel Lipinski (D-IL) Alan Lowenthal (D-CA) Blaine Luetkemeyer (R-MO) John Moolenaar (R-MI) Grace Napolitano (D-CA) Richard Neal (D-MA) Dan Newhouse (R-WA) Peter Roskam (R-IL) Kyrsten Sinema (D-AZ) Adam Smith (D-WA) Paul Tonko (D-NY) Juan Vargas (D-CA) Tim Walberg (R-MI) CORPORATE PARTNERS OF HOLLAND ON THE HILL Aegon/Transamerica AkzoNobel DSM Heineken ING KLM Royal Dutch Airlines Philips Shell Unilever 9
