3 MVP Student Internship Projects Summer2011 Country Ethiopia Ghana Kenya Project Description 1. Develop a cost benefits analysis of a venture regarding the processing and packaging of fresh tomatoes, which are being grown by farmers from irrigated or rain-fed plots. 2. Develop a business plan regarding involvement of smallholder farmers in horticulture production/production of a variety of vegetables. Business plan should discuss inputs, sales and a cost benefit analysis. 3. Develop a business plan regarding a project to fatten cattle to sell them to a nearby meet processing plant. 4. Develop a business plan regarding the value chain of milk production by farmers, including transportation to a central location, quality control, handing of raw milk, transportation to the processing plant, payment schemes, etc. Business plan should explore the feasibility and profitability of the scheme. 5. Develop a business plan for a poultry project for a group of youth and people living with HIVAIDS. 1. Assessment and documentation of capacities of local institutions. 2. Assessment and documentation of water issues prior to the construction of the small town water systems. 3. Assessment and documentation Identifying constraints on the effective operations of cooperatives- farmer based organizations. 4. Appui à la mise en place d une structure de gestion et d infrastructures touristiques attractives pour la Réserve Naturelle Communautaire (RNC) de Potou. 14. Etudes de la biodiversité de la réserve naturelle communautaire de Potou. 1. Develop a plan for hygiene programs in primary and secondary schools. The program will later expand to health clinics and the larger community. 2. Create a standardized protocol for diagnosing and treating severe acute malnutrition, including accurate training on use of RUTFs. For projects on and two, joint-deliverables are: Establishment of health clubs or some other structure at schools (based on what students want and deem appropriate); student-generated educational material; specific behavior steps in hygiene and nutrition for students to carry out at home, to change the culture in their homes. 3. Develop and implement matrix for tracking progress of secondary school scholarship recipients. 4. Develop a creative business plan for hotel or eco-tourism that protects the woodlands and will generate revenue for the area (it should include a strategy for attracting investors for a hotel, recreational park, or eco-tourism. 2-pronged plan).
5 Uganda 1. Develop a plan for Institutional strengthening and organizational development of local institutions. 2. Assess level of participation of different social segments in MVP activities. 3. Assessment of effectiveness of the community radio and community centre and whether it is meeting the information and communication needs of Ruhiira villagers 4. Develop support process to ensure grain warehouses in Ruhiira are compliant with requirements of the Uganda Commodity exchange and warehouse receipt system, and WFP purchase for progress. 5. Develop value chain support for specialty coffee production and marketing. 6. Develop program to empowering women and youth through craft production and marketing. 7. Review the subsidy system for agricultural inputs with respect to level of participation, farmer perceptions and attitudes, and recommend any changes to current system. 8. Profile indigenous vegetables with respect to their abundance, household preferences, and nutritional attributes, and develop a dissemination strategy for potential ones. 9. Conduct GIS mapping of all infrastructure installation in Ruhiira and conduct spatial analysis to determine population coverage levels of these infrastructures. 10. Assess interventions on household water purification: assess adoption rate, attitudes and perceptions, and develop dissemination strategy for PUR water purifiers. 11. Develop program to manage malnutrition at household and health facility levels. 12. Assess perception, attitudes and barriers towards contraception use at household levels. 13. Assessment of the community health worker program: community participation, attitudes, and perceptions. 14. Participation in the year 5 impact surveys in following areas: - Enumerator training on survey tools, survey adaption, Survey piloting and actual data collection; - Data entry processes including training data clerks and template adaptation using Cspro software V4.0+, ensuring control at data entry through data verification mechanisms; - Data analysis to generate quick indicators from each survey module.
