5 Adelaide College of Divinity The Adelaide College of Divinity Incorporated (ACD) provides ecumenical tertiary theological education, with the Uniting Church theological college member of the ACD, the Uniting College for Leadership and Theology. Our focus is on the professional and academic preparation for ministry, centred on student learning needs and with strong integration of practice and theory. ACD courses enable students to examine the Christian theological tradition critically and bring that tradition into dialogue with the issues of contemporary society and the professional practice of ministry. The ecumenical approach of the ACD is enhanced by adjunct lecturers from a range of denominations and visiting scholars. ACD has a long tradition of ecumenical activity in theological education in association with three Christian traditions (Anglican, Catholic and Uniting Churches) for over 30 years: from 2011 this formal association is with the Uniting Church tradition alone. The underpinning ecumenical ethos is seen in the diversity of people at the ACD, in the classrooms, online and on campus. ACD has been unique among theological consortia in joint teaching of courses across the member colleges from the outset (on a common campus since 1997 where students, staff and teaching are located). Course admission has always been, and continues to be, open to all people irrespective of faith tradition. Students and faculty have represented, and continue to represent, a diversity of backgrounds, views and beliefs. The ACD s approach to critical thinking and scholarship is supported by its long tradition of ecumenical activity providing a diversity of backgrounds, views and beliefs among students and faculty. The denominations associated with the ACD past and present each have long traditions of scholarship. ACD s approach to academic integrity, freedom and scholarship is also informed by a long association with Flinders University over the past thirty years. ACD teaching faculty have academic status at the University and teach and supervise students enrolled through Flinders University. ACD is a government registered Higher Education Provider offering accredited bachelor, master and doctor of ministry courses and as a Registered Training Organisation, the ACD also offers VET accredited certificate and diploma courses in Christian life and ministry. VET and higher education courses are also available in the external mode for those students who are unable to attend regular scheduled teaching sessions at the College. The Brooklyn Park Campus is the location for teaching ACD and Flinders University Theology courses, and for the Adelaide Theological Library. The Adelaide Theological Library (ATL) is a specialist ecumenical theological collection affiliated with the Flinders University Library. The ATL collection includes well over volumes, 220 current periodicals and various online resources, including citation and full text databases. 6 Courses offered by the Adelaide College of Divinity The Adelaide College of Divinity offers courses at both the undergraduate and postgraduate levels and also VET courses. Undergraduate At the undergraduate level the Adelaide College of Divinity offers three courses: Diploma of Ministry 1 year of full-time study or part-time equivalent Associate Degree of Ministry 2 years of full-time study or part-time equivalent, and the Bachelor of Ministry 3 years of full-time study or part-time equivalent. Details of these courses are provided in this volume of the Adelaide College of Divinity Handbook. There is flexibility for students within these courses. For example students enrolled in the Bachelor course may choose to exit early with a diploma qualification. Students may also choose to extend their studies, for example transferring to the degree after successful completion of the diploma course. Diploma of Ministry The Diploma of Ministry provides some foundational theological study in the disciplines underpinning ministry practice suitable for a range of lay roles. The course gives flexibility to students who seek a ministry course shorter than a full three year degree course, or who study in the external mode and are unable to complete the practical requirements for Supervised Field Experience of the Bachelor of Ministry course. The Diploma of Ministry also provides optional pathways for people interested in chaplaincy in schools, aged care and hospitals and church leadership, such as church council members. The course provides an entry qualification for employment in lay ministry roles, and professional development for Church members preparing for leadership roles. Vocational outcomes (paid or unpaid) include: youth leader, parish worker, professional development for teachers in church schools, church councillors or elders, and chaplains in schools, aged care and hospitals. Associate Degree of Ministry The Associate Degree of Ministry provides the same foundation as the Bachelor of Ministry, through the core units, with some beginning specialisation in two areas. The course provides an up-to-date understanding of the major ministry concepts and theories as well as the skills to apply them to life situations as effective practitioners. The structure of the course is flexible enough to accommodate students who, for various reasons, choose not to follow a ministry career or who are unable to meet the practical arrangements for Supervised Field Education of the Bachelor of Ministry course, for example, remote-based external mode students. Vocational outcomes (paid or unpaid) include: lay leader, parish worker, youth leader, and chaplain. Bachelor of Ministry The purpose of the Bachelor of Ministry is to equip Christian leaders to be competent in establishing, developing, transforming and growing healthy communities and networks. The course provides opportunity to people who are interested in the study of Christian ministry in contemporary society, whether this leads to a Christian ministry role or to personal enrichment and leadership development for other fields of endeavour. It is open to people of any, or no, denominational background. The Bachelor of Ministry provides academic and professional preparation for both lay and ordained ministry. The course is designed to equip people for leadership in a variety of contemporary ministry and mission contexts. Employment and vocational outcomes include: youth workers; church planters; children and family workers; church administrators; chaplains in hospital, aged care, prison, mental health and disability settings; congregational ministers; and worship leaders. The course also provides preparation for ordained positions of minister of the word and ministry of deacon. 6

7 Postgraduate At the postgraduate level the Adelaide College of Divinity offers: Graduate Diploma in Ministry or Resource Ministry (exit award from Master s degree) 1 years of full-time study or 2 years part-time Master of Ministry 4 years of part-time study Doctor of Ministry 6 years of part-time study Details of these courses are provided in this volume of the Adelaide College of Divinity Handbook. The postgraduate ministry courses are designed to provide professional development, research, and theological reflection for Christian leaders in ordained and lay ministry roles, with an emphasis on innovation. The courses are nested and build upon one another. Doctor of Ministry The Doctor of Ministry (DMin) is a postgraduate professional degree for those involved in Christian Ministry. It is aimed at assisting Christian leaders in developing their ministry practice skills at an advanced level. Participants are required to engage with contemporary debates around ministry practice, engage in critical reflection on areas of ministry specialisation and carry out original research concerning practice in the profession, the results of which will be embodied in a thesis for submission to external examination. VET courses As a Registered Training Organisation, the ACD also offers VET accredited certificate and diploma courses in Christian life and ministry. Details of these courses are provided in the Adelaide College of Divinity Handbook Volume 2. People who enrol in these courses are generally already employed or actively engaged in a range of ministry settings. Current students include people working in ordained ministry, police, mental health and aged cared chaplaincy, the arts, and educational leadership. Relevant experience is a requirement of admission. Master of Ministry The Master of Ministry (MMin) is a postgraduate professional degree for those involved in Christian Ministry. It is aimed at assisting Christian leaders in developing their personal, spiritual, pastoral and intellectual capacities. Participants are required to engage with contemporary approaches to empirical research and theological reflection. They interact with the best of the current thinking in a relevant area of pastoral ministry and apply the theoretical knowledge they have acquired in developing a ministry project built around current pastoral practice. Students may choose to exit the course early with a Graduate Diploma in Ministry or Graduate Diploma in Resource Ministry, provided they have met the requirements for these awards. 7

They are not available to new students. Undergraduate course A first degree, associate degree, or diploma course. At the undergraduate level the Adelaide College of Divinity offers three courses: Diploma of Ministry Associate Degree of Ministry Bachelor of Ministry. Unit coding - postgraduate The first digit of the code refers to the level of the unit. Units coded at the 8000 level or above are at the postgraduate level. Unit coding - undergraduate The first digit of the code refers to the level of the unit eg 1000, 2000 etc. The second digit of the code refers to the subject area: Biblical Studies MINS0--- Old Testament MINS1--- New Testament MINS2--- Biblical Languages MINS7--- Missiology MINS3--- Leadership MINS5--- Supervised Field Education MINS5--- Christian Education & Discipleship MINS6--- Integrative Ministry Practice units MINS8--- Transition units MINS000- Unit A unit is a prescribed amount of academic work for which a final grade is recorded. Each course is made up of units and each unit has a weighting of 4.5 credit points. Withdrawal from a Course Students who choose to withdraw from their course once enrolled should complete an ACD Amendment Form. Students must apply for leave from their course before the census dates given above, in order to retain their place in the course. Students who do not have approved leave and are absent from a course for two consecutive semesters or more shall be deemed to have withdrawn from their course. Workload A full-time load for students in higher education courses is 36 credit points per academic year of study. All internal undergraduate units are taught in 2 to 3 hour blocks with ten minute breaks after each fifty minute class. The time spent in class is considered to be contact time. Students should expect to spend at least twice the amount of contact time in non-contact time outside class, for example in activities such as research in the library, reading or writing up essays and assignments. Full-time students should allow at least 27 to 36 hours per week for their study: this is the minimum time commitment, however, some students may find it necessary to commit more than the minimum time. Part-time enrolment is considered to be any enrolment less than 13.5 credit points in a semester. Students enrolled on a part-time basis can calculate the number of hours they should set aside each week in the same way. For example a student enrolled in one 4.5 credit point unit in a semester should allow a minimum of 6 to 9 hours per week: 2 to 3 contact hours and 4 to 6 noncontact hours. The guideline for the total amount of student work expected for each unit is 1000 words per credit point. For each 4.5 credit point unit students should expect to submit 4500 words, or equivalent in other forms of assessment. 11

12 External Mode of Study External mode An external unit is a unit which does not require attendance on campus and is delivered through a learning package. The material may be delivered on-line or in printed form, depending on the unit being studied. Courses available Units in the following undergraduate courses are available in external mode: Bachelor of Ministry Associate Degree of Ministry, and Diploma of Ministry. Units are also offered in the external mode at the postgraduate level. It should be noted that not all units in every course are offered in external mode: please refer to the timetables in the Undergraduate and Postgraduate sections of this Handbook. External Study Adelaide College of Divinity course requirements and policies and procedures apply equally to all students irrespective of their mode of study: internal or external. External students are entitled to an ACD ID card with borrowing privileges at the Adelaide Theological Library. Critical enrolment, semester and census dates and fees are the same for all ACD students. Enrolment and Due Dates Enrolment prior to the beginning of the semester is strongly advised; although enrolment in individual units may be accepted up to the second week of semester. Workload As a general guide, study in the external mode requires about 140 to 190 hours of work in total for a 4.5 credit point unit, or about 10 to 14 hours a week over the semester. Some students find they need more time than this, particularly if they have been away from study for some time, or their original language is not English. Extensions Students having difficulty in meeting the assignment deadlines should apply for an extension of time as soon as practicable. Contact ACD Student Services to request an extension of time for an assignment. Withdrawal If a student is considering withdrawing they should take note of semester census dates and academic withdrawal dates as there could be a financial or academic penalty for late withdrawals. In 2014 the census dates are: 31 March 2014 for Semester 1 units 31 August 2014 for Semester 2 units. Withdrawals after these dates will incur either a FEE-HELP debt or the tuition fee will not be refunded. Further information Advice and assistance regarding enrolment or coursework should be directed initially to ACD Student Services: telephone: For print-based units early enrolment allows time for study materials to be available for the start of semester. The unit outline provides details of the unit as well as all due dates for assignments. Students should plan their studies carefully as all assignments must be submitted by the end of the semester of enrolment. 12

Successful applicants will then receive a letter of admission, a copy of the current ACD Handbook and an enrolment form. Orientation and Enrolment Students are invited to attend a campus Orientation session before the start of semester. 13

14 Supervised Field Education The professional focus of the Bachelor of Ministry lies in the requirement of Supervised Field Education (SFE), in which the knowledge, skills and attitudes developed in course units are put into practice. This practice will be set within an educational context in which a supervisor enables the student to reflect practically, personally and theologically on the field education. Supervised Field Education will be evaluated by the supervisor as satisfactory or unsatisfactory on the basis of a learning contract, regular student reports as the data for supervisory conferences, and with the goal of ongoing self-evaluation in ministry in mind. Students interested in Supervised Field Experience may contact the SFE Coordinator who oversees the academic and professional quality of student learning in SFE units. Requirements relating to Supervised Field Education are summarised in the unit descriptions section of this Handbook. Credit points and student workload All undergraduate units have a value of 4.5 credit points each. A full-time student enrols in eight units a year amounting to 36 credit points, or four units totalling 18 credit points each semester. A part-time student studying half-time basis enrols in four units a year amounting to 18 credit points, or two units totalling 9 credit points each semester. Students may select the workload that fits in best with their other responsibilities. Coordinators Undergraduate Course Coordinator Dr Liz Boase Telephone: Areas of Study Coordinators Biblical Studies Rev Dr Vicky Balabanski Telephone Christian Education and Discipleship To be advised Leadership Mr Craig Bailey Telephone: Missiology Dr Rosemary Dewerse Telephone: Supervised Field Education Coordinator Rev Sean Gilbert Telephone: (08) The credit point value of each unit is an indication of the required student work load.
