3 1. Principal s Welcome Welcome to Bible College SA Our passion is to equip believers to serve Jesus in Adelaide, Australia and beyond so that lives can be transformed by Christ. We believe that studying God s word in scripture is more than gaining information; it is about not being conformed to this world, and being renewed through the transformation of our minds, and through our minds, our lives. In this booklet, you will find information about our mission as a College and how you can be equipped to take your part in bringing the gospel of Jesus Christ to our dying world. You will find information about course pathways and the philosophy underlying our commitment as a College. We pray that as you consider the pathway of study suited to your circumstances and purpose, God will use this opportunity to transform you as a disciple of Jesus and equip you to serve him wherever he may lead. The Mission of Bible College SA Our mission is to serve God and his church, both locally and globally, by sending out godly and transformed gospel workers who are trained to take the world captive for Christ. We aim to accomplish our mission by four key strategies: Providing an in-depth and applied study of the Bible as the Word of God. Deepening love for and obedience to the Lord Jesus Christ both individually and corporately as a community of God s people. Developing practical skills and pastoral wisdom for the context of gospel ministry Training in the proclamation of the gospel within and across cultures in both local and global contexts. 1

4 3. Our Training Strategy Bible College SA is about equipping and preparing believers to serve Jesus in their ministry and mission contexts. As our name implies, we believe that the vital first step in this preparation is a thorough grounding in the Scriptures and the development of skills that enable better use and understanding of God s word both in our personal lives and as we seek to serve Him. The following table outlines the building blocks of theological education and how each component relates to the areas of study. Biblical Framework Build a framework on which to better understand the Bible through a knowledge of the background and context and an appreciation of God s message not only for the original recipients but also for ourselves today. 5 Through the foundation of biblical studies and the above building blocks of theological education, we aim to equip our students with the following skills: Foundational Biblical and Theological Skills The ability to responsibly interpret and meaningfully apply Scripture in the contemporary context. The ability to articulate and defend foundational Christian doctrines and to identify their implications for contemporary Christian living. The ability to reflect theologically on contemporary society. Foundational Ministry Skills The skills for composing and delivering a biblical message in public worship. The skills for composing and presenting biblical teaching in a small group setting such as a home Bible study group. The ability to articulate the gospel plainly, accurately and contextually. The ability to self-evaluate ministry activities. The ability to address ethical issues biblically. The skills for discipling someone to greater maturity in Christ. 3

6 4. Course Information Bible College SA offers a range of courses that are fully accredited by the Australian College of Theology (ACT). The Australian College of Theology is the oldest and largest theological education body in Australia with highly regarded degrees both nationally and overseas. Our courses range in length from one year to four years and are flexible to suit the contexts and lives of our students. There are four levels of study represented in our courses: Diploma courses (Diploma of Theology/Ministry) Degree courses (Associate Degree; Bachelor of Christian Studies/Ministry/ Theology) Graduate courses (Graduate Diploma of Divinity; Master of Divinity) Postgraduate courses (by coursework or research) Each course is structured under ten fields of study. The following table will help you navigate through the course information by outlining the field of study with its code. Each course consists of a set number of subjects or units, brief descriptions of which are at the back of this Handbook. In the following sections, you will find first an overview of the courses offered by Bible College SA and secondly a more in-depth pathway through each course. 4

An Overview of Our On-Campus Courses Diplomas Purpose: suitable for personal spiritual growth and for effective participation in the local church Diploma of Theology (1 year full-time) Diploma of Ministry (1 year full-time) Advanced Diplomas (18 months full-time) Provides some in-depth study of the Bible and theology and an introduction to skills in the chosen ministry area. Similar to the Diploma of Theology with less biblical study and more emphasis on ministry skills. Both of the above awards can be extended into advanced diplomas allowing students to cover more Bible and theology and/or ministry units Undergraduate Degree Study Purpose: professional awards providing a solid foundation in biblical and theological studies and in the theory and practice of ministry skills Associate Degree (2 years full-time) Bachelor of Christian Studies (3 years full-time) Bachelor of Theology (3 years full-time) Bachelor of Ministry (3 years full-time) Bachelor of Theology / Bachelor of Ministry (4 years full-time) Honours (1 year full-time) Provides an in-depth study of biblical and theological studies for informed participation in Christian ministry. For those who wish to integrate a well-informed theological knowledge with their professional and vocational life. Provides a thorough foundation in biblical studies and Christian theology for a well-informed teaching ministry. Similar to the BTh but with more focus on the theory and practice of ministry skills and less on biblical studies. This double degree provides the benefits of both the BTh and the BMin. Ideal for those preparing for pastoral ministry. The Honours year provides the opportunity to undertake solid research in a chosen topic of theological study or ministry. This prepares the student for post-graduate research. 5

8 Graduate Study Suitable for personal spiritual growth and as a foundation for ministry within local church Graduate Certificate of Divinity (6 months full-time) A certificate to equip people with a non-theology background to prepare themselves for postgraduate study in theology or divinity. Graduate Diploma of Divinity (1 year full-time Master of Divinity (3 years full-time) Master of Arts (Christian Studies) (2 years full-time) A basic theological and biblical foundation for graduates in other disciplines for a better-informed personal ministry. Provides a thorough foundation in biblical studies and Christian theology for a well-informed teaching ministry. For those who wish to apply a well-informed Christian perspective and commitment to their professional and vocational lives. Post Graduate Degree Awards Purpose: Intended as preparation for vocational pastoral ministry Master of Arts (Ministry) For those who want to broaden and deepen the ministry (2 years equivalent full-time) concepts begun in a first theological degree. Ideal for professional development. Master of Arts (Theology) For those who want to broaden and deepen their theological (2 years equivalent full-time) understanding begun in a first theological degree. Ideal for professional and vocational development. Master of Theology (2 years full-time) A research masters designed for those wanting to move towards teaching in a theological college. This program articulates to a ThD, DMin or PhD. 6

Our Key Undergraduate Diploma Courses Bible College SA offers diploma awards studied at degree level which articulate on to the Associate Degree and the full Bachelor degrees Diploma of Theology (Pathway 2) (1 year full-time) (ACT Course Code 188) The Diploma of Theology (DipTh) provides an introduction to a systematic study of the Bible and theology and, if chosen, an introduction to ministry skills in a particular ministry area. Prerequisites Open as a first degree to persons who have achieved an Australian Tertiary Admission Rank (ATAR) score of no less than 65 or equivalent. Mature age entry is available for candidates 21 years and older. International students whose first language is not English and who do not have a tertiary qualification in English will be required to achieve an IELTS result of 6.5 overall with a minimum of 6.5 in reading and writing, and 6.5 in listening and speaking. Diploma of Ministry (Pathway 2) (1 year full-time) (ACT Course Code 190) The Diploma of Ministry (DipMin) provides a foundation of knowledge and skills appropriate to various Christian Ministries. This is similar to the Diploma of Theology but with less biblical study and more emphasis on ministry skills. Prerequisites Open as a first degree to persons who have achieved an Australian Tertiary Admission Rank (ATAR) score of no less than 65 or equivalent. Mature age entry is available for candidates 21 years and older. International students whose first language is not English and who do not have a tertiary qualification in English will be required to achieve an IELTS result of 6.5 overall with a minimum of 6.5 in reading and writing, and 6.5 in listening and speaking. Associate Degree of Theology (2 years full-time) (ACT Course Code ADT) The Associate Degree of Theology (AssocDegTh) provides an in-depth study of biblical and theological studies for informed participation in Christian ministry. Prerequisites Open as a first degree to persons who have achieved an Australian Tertiary Admission Rank (ATAR) score of no less than 65 or equivalent. Mature age entry is available for candidates 21 years and older. International students whose first language is not English and who do not have a tertiary qualification in English will be required to achieve an IELTS result of 6.5 overall with a minimum of 6.5 in reading and writing, and 6.5 in listening and speaking. Bachelor of Christian Studies (3 years full-time) (ACT Course Code 170) The Bachelor of Christian Studies (BChrStuds) course is for those who wish to integrate a well-informed theological knowledge with their professional and vocational life and requires two years of theological study and one year of a university program in a nontheological discipline. A feature of this course is a project in which the candidate applies a Christian perspective to life in the world, whether it be in regard to church, personal or professional life. Prerequisites Open as a first degree to persons who have achieved an Australian Tertiary Admission Rank (ATAR) score of no less than 65 or equivalent. Mature age entry is available for candidates 21 years and older. International students whose first language is not English and who do not have a tertiary qualification in English will be required to achieve an IELTS result of 6.5 overall with a minimum of 6.5 in reading and writing, and 6.5 in listening and speaking. Bachelor of Theology (3 years full-time) (ACT Course Code 168) The Bachelor of Theology (BTh) provides a thorough foundation in Biblical Studies and Christian Theology for professional ministry and/or for further academic study. Prerequisites Open as a first degree to persons who have achieved an Australian Tertiary Admission Rank (ATAR) score of no less than 65 or equivalent. Mature age entry is available for candidates 21 years and older. International students whose first language is not English and who do not have a tertiary qualification in English will be required to achieve an IELTS result of 6.5 overall with a minimum of 6.5 in reading and writing, and 6.5 in listening and speaking. 14 7.4. Bachelor of Ministry (3 years full-time) (ACT Course Code 166) The Bachelor of Ministry (BMin) course prepares men and women for professional Christian service. The course integrates biblical and theological study with reflection, ministry skills and spiritual development. Prerequisites Open as a first degree to persons who have achieved an Australian Tertiary Admission Rank (ATAR) score of no less than 65 or equivalent. Mature age entry is available for candidates 21 years and older. International students whose first language is not English and who do not have a tertiary qualification in English will be required to achieve an IELTS result of 6.5 overall with a minimum of 6.5 in reading and writing, and 6.5 in listening and speaking. Graduate Certificate of Divinity (6 months full-time) (ACT Course Code 195) The Graduate Certificate of Divinity (GradCertDiv) aims to equip candidates with a nontheology background to prepare themselves for postgraduate study as a means of developing research skills appropriate to theology and divinity. Prerequisites Candidates must have graduated with a bachelor degree from an Australian or overseas university in a non-theological discipline or have successfully completed the equivalent of such a course. International students whose first language is not English and who do not have a tertiary qualification in English will be required to achieve an IELTS result of 7.0 overall with a minimum of 7.0 in reading and writing, and 6.5 in listening and speaking. Graduate Diploma of Divinity (1 year full-time) (ACT Course Code 171) The Graduate Diploma of Divinity (GradDipDiv) is a program for graduates with no formal qualifications in theological studies who want to gain a good working knowledge of the biblical and theological foundations of the Christian faith and be able to serve the churches by communicating this knowledge to others. Prerequisites Candidates must have graduated with a bachelor degree from an Australian or overseas university in a non-theological discipline or have successfully completed the equivalent of such a course. International students whose first language is not English and who do not have a tertiary qualification in English will be required to achieve an IELTS result of 7.0 overall with a minimum of 7.0 in reading and writing, and 6.5 in listening and speaking. Master of Divinity (3 years full-time) (ACT Course Code 172) The Master of Divinity is a graduate award that provides a thorough foundation in Biblical Studies and Christian Theology for professional ministry and/or for further academic study. Prerequisites Candidates must have graduated with a bachelor degree from an Australian or overseas university in a non-theological discipline or have successfully completed the equivalent of such a course. International students whose first language is not English and who do not have a tertiary qualification in English will be required to achieve an IELTS result of 7.0 overall with a minimum of 7.0 in reading and writing, and 6.5 in listening and speaking. Master of Arts (Christian Studies) (2 years full-time) (ACT Course Code 174) The Master of Arts (Christian Studies) is a graduate award that equips people with a well-informed theological knowledge and skill to apply a Christian perspective and commitment to their professional and vocational life and to help them integrate theological reflection with their particular occupational and/or life interest. The program requires two years of theological study but includes a project which integrates the students theological study with their non-theological studies. Prerequisites Candidates must have graduated with a bachelor degree from an Australian or overseas university in a non-theological discipline or have successfully completed the equivalent of such a course. International students whose first language is not English and who do not have a tertiary qualification in English will be required to achieve an IELTS result of 7.0 overall with a minimum of 7.0 in reading and writing, and 6.5 in listening and speaking. Our Postgraduate Courses The postgraduate program at Bible College SA is a pathway for the professional development of gospel workers engaged in vocational mission and ministry so that as iron sharpens iron, one sharpens another. Initial training in theological education equips us with the skills to communicate clearly and effectively God s word in Scripture. Postgraduate study is a strategic step forward for sharpening our skills and for growth in maturity as teachers of God s word in Scripture. Therefore, the postgraduate program is aimed to equip gospel workers with advanced biblical, ministry, and mission skills. We offer both coursework and research pathways An Overview of the Coursework Pathway The coursework pathway is a nested program where there are three major exit points. Each unit is worth 8 credit points: 2 units (16cps) Graduate Certificate of Ministry or Theology (up to 3 years part-time) 4 units (32cps) Graduate Diploma of Ministry or Theology (up to 4 years part-time) 8 units (64 cps) Master of Arts (Ministry or Theology) (up to 8 years full-time) The nested structure of the program allows students to gradually progress through a program of study and exit with an award at either the 2, 4, or 8 unit exit points. For example, a student could complete two units and exit with a Graduate Certificate or have the option of undertaking another 2 units and exit with a Graduate Diploma An Overview of the Research Pathway The Research Program is designed to provide further training in research for those who are preparing to teach in theological education both in Australia and in overseas crosscultural contexts. The program involves undertaking research in an area of specialisation, peer-review of research pathway by scholars already involved in research and theological education, establishing a publication strategy, and participating in collaborative research forums. Currently, the award for our Research Program is the Master of Theology. There are three different pathways for this award: Pathway 1: 40,000 50,000 word thesis Pathway 2: Two coursework units at 700 level with a 28,000 35, 000 word thesis Pathway 3: Two research papers of 8000 words each with a 28,000 35, 000 word thesis Potential students can apply to undertake a pathway in 2 years full-time or 6 years parttime. 20 10. Studying Full-Time Our full-time study program is holistic and aims to equip students with the ability to contextualise their learning into their mission and ministry contexts. The program purposefully brings together a growing understanding of God s word in Scripture, the development of skills in logic and reasoning, and the sharpening of ministry skills, with a view to helping disciples of Jesus to grow in maturity. Moreover, we believe that we learn better in community with one another so that as iron sharpens iron, so we sharpen one another. To this end, the full-time program encourages students to engage within the spiritual-academic community of Bible College SA. This involves fellowship together as a worshipping community where God's Word is central, sharing in prayer days together, and setting apart each Thursday morning to gather as a student body for interactive ministry developments sessions. By these means, the full-time study program at Bible College SA is designed to be lifechanging and to equip men and women for life-long learning. Involvement in full-time study encompasses: 3 4 units per semester Joining in Community Praise and Fellowship (CPF) each Tuesday morning. Being sharpened together in the interactive ministry development sessions each Thursday morning. Gathering with faculty and students for prayer days each term (Thursday) Joining a prayer triplet with fellow students Because full-time study entails participation in the community life of Bible College SA as part of the course requirements, an applicant for full-time study would normally be twenty two years of age or older and must meet the following criteria. He/she: Is a professing Christian who can demonstrate this by, among other things, being able to give an adequate account of personally coming to faith in Christ as Lord and Saviour. Is in satisfactory fellowship with an established Christian congregation. Is commended to Bible College SA through written references provided by the applicant s minister and at least one other mature Christian. Is able to demonstrate an ability to cope with the academic demands of the chosen program of study as a full-time student. Has read Bible College SA s Statement of Faith and is willing to participate in Bible College SA life on the understanding that Bible College SA operates within the parameters of that Statement. Accepts the requirements of the spiritual development program of Bible College SA. Demonstrates sufficient spiritual maturity to adequately benefit from the full-time program. 18

21 Is able to demonstrate that the chosen means of financing full-time study will not hinder his/her ability to meet the full requirements of the academic program and community life of Bible College SA. Is willing to fully participate in Bible College SA s Supervised Field Education program unless an exemption is granted. All who are interested in full-time study or who have questions about the full-time program are invited to make an appointment with the Principal for further information. We recommend that if you are training for vocational Christian ministry whether in a local church context, in overseas mission, church-planting, or for a para-church organization such as AFES, we would strongly encourage you to make the next three years a priority in studying full-time and making the most of your time studying at College that God has given to you. 11. Other Modes of Study Part-time study is an option for students particularly who are desiring to study God s word in order to grow their own maturity in Christ and so that they might be equipped to serve in their local churches non-vocationally as small group leaders, for example. Part-time students can take one or two units per a semester and are encouraged to participate in the Bible College SA community as they are able. Are you currently studying at university? Then you may wish to consider taking a unit for cross-institutional credit. Contact your university to find out how many elective units you can study and then contact our Academic Dean to find out which units at Bible College SA are eligible to be taken for cross-credit. Maybe you wish to study but not to complete any particular degree. If this is the case, then students may undertake 16 credit points of units at any level for personal interest as a non-award student. If you desire to attend classes but do not wish to undertake assessment associated with that unit, then you may enrol as an audit student. Please take note that students who elect to study as an audit student are still expected to undertake the readings required of the class by the lecturer. 12. Church Partnerships and Internships Students are encouraged to enter into a partnership with their home church while studying at Bible College SA. The level of partnership may vary from simply enabling good communication between Bible College SA, church and student to a formal internship. The scheme involves Bible College SA and the home church (or organisation) participating together to provide a personalised training program that enables increased (biblical and theological) knowledge to happen alongside development of ministry skills and personal spiritual growth. There is considerable flexibility in these arrangements with both the church and student able to determine the outcomes desired and the level of commitment required. 19

22 13. Certificate in Ministry Formation Our study program aims to help students integrate biblical understanding, ministry skills and personal formation. So we offer students the Certificate in Ministry Formation to recognise how students have been involved in this process of integrating theology for life and ministry. The Certificate in Ministry Formation is designed to complement the ACT awards we offer. It has been designed with the support of denominations, mission agencies and parachurch groups. There are two major components to the Certificate in Ministry Formation: Part A Personal Formation Part B Ministry Formation In 2015, Part A and Part B will be covered on Thursday afternoons. Part A covers issues such as Holiness, Suffering, Character, Prayer (including our Prayer Days each term), Godly Household, Worshipping Disciple (including College Chapel and Spiritual Retreats). Part B includes formation in Growing New Leadership, Dealing with Conflict, Connecting Theology and Life, Sexuality, Finances, How to run a Church, Other Faiths, Children s Ministry and Dealing with Grief. The learning approach for the Certificate in Ministry Formation is broad. It involves interaction with other students and faculty, personal reflection and growing selfawareness, excursions to relevant ministry contexts as well as appropriate written and visual resources. A small assessment piece is required for each of the topics in Part B. It is anticipated that students will complete the Certificate with a set of resources ready for them to use in ministry (eg: a set of Bible studies on personal conflict; a strategy document for fund raising). 14. Student Fees All students are charged the Bible College SA unit fee shown in the table below Fees are charged according to the unit level as follows: Unit Level Levels Bible College SA Unit Fee Diploma 300 $1700 (per unit) Degree 300,400 $1700 (per unit) Graduate 500,600 $1880 (per unit) All units may be audited at a cost of: $350. Supervised Field Education (SFE) is charged in the student s last semester. 20

23 The total fee payable by a full-time student is the sum of the Bible College SA unit fees. As a guide, the normal full-time load is four units per semester or eight units for the year. The full-time fee for the year will then be as follows: Diploma: $13600 pa; Degree: $13600 pa; Graduate: $15040 pa. Fees may be paid in either of the following ways:- Fee Help Term Instalments Direct Debit See information below Due within 7 days of the commencement of each term May be paid over each semester in monthly installments Overseas students are charged an overseas student fee of $250 per semester. 15. Financial Assistance for Students Students studying at Bible College SA may find financial support in a variety of ways: a. Government Assistance: All courses at a diploma, undergraduate, and graduate levels offered by Bible College SA are eligible for FEE-HELP and Austudy assistance. b. Employment: Full-time students are encouraged to find employment during the summer holiday break. Bible College SA recommends that full-time students avoid employment during the academic year. However, we purposefully do not teach on Fridays so that students who need to work may have a unit-free day to work. c. From a Local Church A number of students are given a measure of support from their home church. The amount of support, if any, depends entirely on the church and Christian friends. FEE HELP Information FEE HELP is a Commonwealth Government loan program for full-time and part-time students. To be eligible for this loan, a student must be an Australian citizen or possess a permanent humanitarian visa. Eligible students borrow from the government to pay all or part of their Bible College SA fees. This loan is then repaid through the taxation system on a sliding scale once a person s income reaches a nominated threshold presently, this is $53,345 pa ( income year). FEE HELP is also available for university students undertaking studies for cross-credit to university programs. Units Offered at Bible College SA Three Unit Levels The units offered by the Australian College of Theology are grouped into three levels distinguished by the type of award for which the units are suitable. Degree level (300 and 400 level units) Graduate level for non-theological graduates (500 and 600 level units) Numbering Each unit has an identification code consisting of two letters and three numerals. For example, CH301: CH refers to the field of study (ie Church History), 3" refers to the level and 01" identifies the specific unit within the field Credit Points Each unit is assigned a credit point of 4 cps. A normal load for a full-time student is 32 cps per year Unit cycles Most units are offered at the College over a one or two year cycle (as indicated in the legend below). The exceptions are those units that are available for students to take within their course but are not in any cycle.
