3 About Emmaus Emmaus is an evangelical Bible College accredited through the Sydney College of Divinity and the NSW Vocational Education Training Accreditation Board. Emmaus offers diverse and flexible study programmes. Courses are open to all Christians who seek to develop their Bible and theological knowledge and who wish to develop a solid foundation for their future ministry. Operating since 1959 Our mission is to provide excellence in biblical education We invite all those who have a passion for Biblical study to enrol now and join the many who have been blessed and equipped by studying at Emmaus Bible College. Come, learn with us 3

4 From the Principal Dear Friends in Christ, I present to you information regarding the courses and facilities at Emmaus for Emmaus has a rich heritage based on the commitment of a number of people seeking to serve their God through education. When Emmaus Bible College began, the vision was to prepare young people for overseas missionary service or for lay ministry within both Christian Brethren Assemblies and other evangelical Christian traditions. Throughout the years since, different biblical and theological programmes have been offered, however, the original intent remains central. For Christians to: - grow in the knowledge of Christ; - be effective in their witness within their local church; - work together with other members of the body of Christ in reaching non-christians with the gospel, and to - encourage one another to continue in the faith. The staff and students at Emmaus are a delightful group of believers seeking to foster personal growth and ministry. We are connected with others through various partnerships, which make our programmes richer. Our methods of delivery aim to provide for various learners needs and we are continually seeking new means of taking the study of the Word of God further afield promises to be an exciting year and I trust this prospectus provides you with information that will motivate you to consider enrolling in one of our courses and therefore to join our community. I invite you to seek further information via the College website or to contact us directly. Dr Leonard J Smith Principal 4

5 At Emmaus We believe that the Word of God affects people s lives. Therefore, as students study the Bible it is expected they show growth in their spiritual lives. The Sydney College of Divinity will award a qualification for successful participation of the course, however, we delight to see our students mature as Christians and grow in grace. An important part of the mature Christian life is self-discipline and submission to God s Word. The Lord Jesus taught His disciples. He gave them many lessons as they went about their lives. We encourage, where possible, our students to be involved in the ministry at their local church while they study at Emmaus; in this way they will be able to apply some of their new knowledge and skills. Assessment Emmaus strives to ensure that all studies reflect a deep learning that will be able to be recalled, developed and relied upon during a life time of serving God. As such, we believe that assessment should be continual throughout the course. Students are required to complete a number of assessment tasks for each course they undertake. These assessment tasks vary depending on the course undertaken, and may include assignments, testimonies, interviews, examinations, journals or practical ministry involvement. Often a student s assessment incorporates a number of these. The Library The Emmaus library is an excellent resource for supporting studies. Accredited through the Sydney College of Divinity approximately 13,000 items are available for loan or use on site. The facility is bright, modern and airy and most conducive to study. The catalogue is available by remote access as are ATLA and ATLAS databases. Emmaus has an active book and multi-media acquisitions policy and subscribes to a wide range of journals both academic and popular. New students must attend a reader education seminar, in order to learn to use the library effectively. Technology Support Computers are available in the library for student use, both to assist with the preparation of assignments and for research. Printing and photocopying services are available in the library at minimal charges. 5

14 Modes of Learning at Emmaus Bible College Emmaus strives to meet the demands of the learner by offering a variety of modes of learning delivery. In addition to the traditional classroom based learning Emmaus continues to expand the use of technology and the Internet to reach its learners. The following is a brief summary of the modes of learner engagement: Classroom based is the traditional method of face-to-face teaching methodology, the lecturer teaches students in class. Classes are usually three hours in duration with a break. Distant Learning is where the student is self-direct in their own learning through material provided by the College. This mode has tended to be through the use of Readers and associated reading material; Emmaus does not offer this mode of Distant Learning. Alternatively, Emmaus records classes which are then uploaded onto the website. Students can view the lessons at their leisure throughout the week and respond to classroom-based questions with the lecturer through . Online learning is where the learner engages with the lecturer through the use of the Internet. The student needs to have access to a computer with Internet access. Online learning has two modes: Online Lessons are hosted through the Moodle platform, which is a Learning Management System. Classes are set each week with lesson content, which may include readings, power-point presentations, short video clips etc. Students, at their own pace, work through each lesson, and complete the required tutorials. Tutorials are a system of communication between the lecturer, the student and other students. Virtual Classroom is where the student or lecturer is external to the classroom. The subject may be taught as classroom-based with some students or all external to the classroom environment. Students log onto the College s webpage at a preset time and engage with the class in real time. Students and the lecturer are able to see and hear each other. The virtual classroom is recorded so students are able to review the class at a later point in time if required. The recordings of these classes can be used for online learning. 14
