Introduction to 3D Modeling with Solidworks For ES100, Fall 2010 Sam Kesner and Xuan Liang This tutorial will cover: Sketching Views and planes Dimensioning Features: extruding, boss, and cut Linear and circular patterns Mirroring Filleting Adding text Saving files for 3D printing Page 1 of 10
Instructions The steps for making a keychain: ES Your Name 1. Open Solidworks 2. Start a new part: File -> new -> part 3. Clean up the program work area: close the two floating toolbars and all of the COSMOS toolbars (right click on the toolbar area and uncheck unwanted toolbars) 4. Change the default units: Tools->options->Document properties->units and select IPS. This tutorial is written in inches. 5. Save your new blank part file in the T: drive or on your laptop as es100_yourlastname. 6. Start the piece by highlighting the front plane from the navigation tree and selecting the Sketch button. 7. Select the Rectangle tool and create a rectangle by selection the origin point and dragging the curser to the right. Page 2 of 10
8. Select the Smart Dimension tool and click on 2 perpendicular sides of the rectangle to make it 2.25 inch by 1.0 inches. 9. Select the Sketch Fillet button, set the fillet radius to 0.25, and then select each corner of the rectangle to create the fillets (rounded corners). Page 3 of 10
10. Select Features -> extrude Boss. Then set the extrude depth to be inches 11. You should now have a 3D block that will serve as the base of your keychain Page 4 of 10
12. Now to add the key ring hole. Click on the front face of the rectangle block and select the sketch button. Select the front view from the views toolbar. The various views make it easier for you to sketch on your part. 13. Select the circle tool and make a small circle on the right side of the block. 14. Use the smart dimensions tool to position the center of circle to be 0.25 from the right edge and 0.5 from the top edge of the block. The circle diameter should be set to Views toolbar 15. With this sketch still selected, create a feature. Select feature->extrude cut. The cut settings should be to make a Blind cut with the same thickness as the block (.125 ). 16. We are now going to draw some words on the key chain. Create a new sketch again on the front face of the block. 17. Insert the text ES with tools ->sketch entities ->Text in SW2007 or use the Text button in the Sketch tab in SW2010. Deselect use document font and select a font and size you prefer. I recommend Trebuchet MS, bold italic, and 24 point. Click the mouse where you want the text to go. I recommend centering the text in the middle of the piece. You can change this later if you need to. Page 5 of 10
18. Follow the Extrude cut procedure for this sketch, but only cut 1/16 th of an inch (0.0625) and change the from setting to cut from a surface, and select the front face of the block. 19. Other text can be added below the ES100 text. For example your name. A font that prints well is Coppertone gothic bold. I wrote my name with a 16 point font. 20. After you select your second text, create an Extrude boss feature with the text using the same method we used to create the original block. Extrude the text 1/16 th of an inch from the front surface. If you sketch plane is not on the front surface, extrude from the surface instead by changing the from setting. Page 6 of 10
The following steps were created to teach you a number of fundamental Solidwork techniques and skills. You can customize any of these details, but please check with the instructor to assess the complexity and feasibility of your designs. 21. Next, we will create a linear pattern at the top of the block and mirror it to the bottom. First, we will sketch a hexagon shape. This shape can be found at tools- > sketch entities->polygon. Create a polygon aligned with the edges of the block. Use the smart dimensions tool to make the polygon be 0.16 in diameter, 0.06 from the top and 0.5 from the left side. 22. Highlight the polygon and then go to tools->sketch tools ->linear pattern. The x- axis should already be selected. Set the distance to be 0.63 and the number of objects to 3. The polygons should look evenly spaced across the block. Page 7 of 10
23. To mirror the 3 polygons to the other side of the block, create a centerline (on sketch toolbar) that divides the block s top and bottom into two equal parts. Then, highlight the polygons and the centerline and select tools->sketch tools - >mirror. If the centerline is not automatically selected as the mirror line, highlight it separately. The polygons should be mirrored across the centerline. 24. After mirroring the polygons, extrude cut them through the block. Instead of selecting a cut depth, select through all. Page 8 of 10
25. We will now learn how to create circular patterns. The choice of shape for this task if up to you. I will suggest creating a circular pattern of dots around the keyring hole. I created diameter circles 0.2 from the center of the hole. 26. To circular pattern the circle, select the sketch and go to tools->sketch tools -> circular pattern. Select the circle and drag the center of the circular pattern to the center of the keyring hole. Set the number to Extrude boss the pattern 1/32 from the surface. 28. The last step is to create a fillet (rounded edge) on the key ring whole, block edge, and dot pattern. Select features ->fillet. Set the fillet radius to 0.03 and select Page 9 of 10
the front edge of the features you want to fillet. Once all of the edges are selected, selected ok. 29. If you receive an error, you might have selected the wrong edge of a face instead. The result should look like this: 30. The final step is to save you part as a.stl (stereolithography file). Go to save as and select STL. When prompted, select all bodies. 31. The STL file should be saved as ES100_10_YOURNAME.stl in the T: and Z: \ES100 directory. 32. Congratulations on designing your first part with solidworks! Page 10 of 10
