6 Social Studies: World History Grades 10 3 rd Nine s At a Glance ( 19-27) Advanced Extensions: 19: Tracing the impact of Hobbes and Locke Remind students that the political philosophies of Thomas Hobbes and John Locke played important roles in the development of the government of the United States. Have students conduct research to deepen their understanding of these philosophies, identifying similarities and differences. Then have them research to find out the role these philosophers played in the political development of the United States. 20: Understanding the impact of the Scientific The Scientific was a significant influence on the changes that swept Europe in the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries. Ask students to create a multimedia presentation that shows both scientific and technological advances made as well as changes in the ways that humans thought about the world and themselves. Students should draw information from multiple sources. At the end of the presentation, students should close with their own evaluation of the Scientific and its impact on the world. 21: 22: Comparing revolutionary characteristics Have small student groups create six-column charts with the following questions as headings: Why do revolutions happen? What conditions must be present for a revolution to occur? Who leads a revolution? Who fights in a revolution? How would you define the term revolution? Do all revolutions happen in the same way? Have students provide an answer to each question by citing examples from the French, the American, and one other revolution. Students may choose to assign each question to a different member of the group. 23 & 24: Evaluating the contributions of scientists and inventors Students have learned about a number of significant inventions and scientific breakthroughs that occurred during the Industrial, such as the steam engine, pasteurization, Darwin s ideas about natural selection, and many others. Invite students to make a list of advancements discussed in the chapter and then choose one they believe to be among the most important, and ask them to research it in depth. Students should explain how the advancement came to happen, what its immediate impact was, and how it laid the groundwork for future advances in science and technology. Students should include a claim as to why they ve chosen this advancement as the most significant of the Industrial. 25: 26: Analyzing industrial effects Have student pairs generate lists of effects, both positive and negative, brought about in today's society by improved technology, methods of communication, and advances in industries such as health care and "green" technology. Students may record their ideas in cause-andeffect diagrams. (Positive effects might include the ability to use advances in communication to instantly contact friends, relatives, and businesses through the use of cell phones, , and text messaging, as well as the use of computers to access enormous amounts of information quickly. Improved health care means people are living longer and healthier lives. With the advent of "green" technology, we are building more eco-friendly buildings, and reusing and recycling waste. Negative effects might include a lack of privacy and leisure time when people are expected to be instantly available to friends, relatives, and employers. Another negative effect of advanced communication is that
7 Social Studies: World History Grades 10 3 rd Nine s At a Glance ( 19-27) people sometimes experience an information overload. A downside of improved health care is the strain on our national economies as we struggle to help people pay for this lifesaving care.) Ask volunteers to post and present their diagrams. Then, lead students to establish connections between these ideas and the positive and negative consequences of the Second Industrial. 27: WW1 Project Divide students into small groups, and they will decide what section of WW1 they would like to teach the rest of the class. They must spend time researching the topic (they may use technology and their textbook) to get the information. They are responsible for the vocabulary and the events that occurred during their chosen time period. *Dates based on 36 week calendar and are subject to change based on pacing adjustments.
