3 INTRODUCTION This policy is for the information of all users of The Southport School s Library Resource Centre. It outlines policy underlying decisions relating to the Library Resource Centre Collection, both additions and deletions in all formats i.e. physical and electronic. POLICY STATEMENT The Harley Stumm Centre Library is committed to supporting the Mission of The Southport School: To challenge each boy to achieve excellence in a Christian community where education embraces the whole of life By providing an up to date, well resourced library in an environment that is welcoming and supportive of student needs, TSS boys are encouraged to become life long discerning users of information. OPENING HOURS: The Library Policy Statement recognises that the role of the library is to support of all curricular and co-curricular activities of the School by providing access to high quality resources. The collection is available to the whole school community with borrowing restricted to current staff and students. THE FUNCTION OF THE COLLECTION 1.1 Users The Library provides resources to meet: Student educational and recreational needs Teacher, pre-service teachers assigned to TSS, teacher aides and Administrative staff classroom and professional needs 1.2 The Goals of the Collection The Library collection reflects the school s mission statement by: Inclusively catering for all students abilities and learning styles Providing resources that promote effective learning and teaching across the curriculum Ensuring that resources are up to date and in a variety of formats that reflect current technological developments 2. SELECTION PRINCIPLES 2.1 Responsibility for Selection The ultimate responsibility for collection management is with the Senior Librarian. All suggestions for additions to the collection are reviewed in accordance with the Library selection criteria 2.2 Selection Limitations To support L.O.T.E. teaching at TSS, the Library houses a selection of International resources selected by the L.O.T.E. teacher/s and the Senior Librarian. 4

5 2.3 Co-operative Acquisition Resources for addition to the Teacher Reference collection purchased by Heads of Department in consultation with library staff are subject to the selection criteria and ordered through the library. The resources will be recorded on the Library s management system and housed in the Library s collection or in the appropriate area of the school. 2.4 Selection Criteria INFORMATIONAL RESOURCES - PRINT Qualifications of author/publisher Accuracy Currency Facts to support generalizations Facts to support various points of view Clarity and directness of style Level Layout and visual presentation Australian content where appropriate Free from bias and stereotypes Potential use Cost FICTION RESOURCES In accordance with the school policy statement, material will be purchased so as to offer a balanced collection for all users, endeavoring to foster an environment where the total boy can be developed Reputation of author/publisher Layout and style Plot/theme Potential use Appropriateness of content Free from bias or stereotypes Cost TEACHER REFERENCE RESOURCES Qualifications of the author/publisher Potential use Currency Support national, state and school curriculum Support inclusive curriculum 5

6 Support effective teaching and learning principles Australian content where appropriate Clarity and appropriateness of style Cost 2.5 Donations and Gifts All donations and gifts of items to the Library will be gratefully accepted and reviewed by the Senior Librarian as per the selection criteria. If not viewed as suitable for inclusion in the TSS collection, they will be passed on to an appropriate Second Chance Agency. 2.6 Lost Items It is the responsibility of the borrower to contribute to the replacement cost of lost items. Missing items will be charged to the accounts of individual boys. 3. ACQUISITION POLICY 3.1 Resources are selected using catalogues, company representatives or service company recommendations, personal viewing or personal recommendation. 3.2 Resources must fulfill the selection criteria. 3.3 Where possible, resources are viewed prior to purchase 3.4 A purchase will not be made unless funds are available 3.5 Only approved suppliers or suppliers providing appropriate resources at discounted prices will be used for library purchases. 3.6 Cost and user requirements determine whether electronic formats are purchased in preference to printed text. 6

7 3.7 Material purchased should be compliant with Australian Federal and State legislation. E.g. anti discrimination laws, equal opportunity laws 4. COLLECTION EVALUATION POLICY 4.1 Collection Appraisal The collection will be regularly audited to ensure the continued appropriateness of resources. This is done by a process of observation of and discussion with users, surveys of usage and system data on collection usage. 4.2 Culling of Resources Resources will be culled from the collection using the following criteria: condition out dated information inappropriate content no longer in use as decided by the collection appraisal evaluation process format is no longer in use or the equipment to run the format can no longer be economically maintained or purchased 4.2 Review of Controversial Resources The Library acknowledges the right of parents and guardians to set and convey personal standards for their children. Parents are actively encouraged to become involved in the Library programme through a variety of different opportunities including attendance at a variety of parent information nights. The Library acknowledges that within any community, there will never be universal agreement regarding the appropriateness of all Library resources for all patrons. The provision of a balanced Library Collection that caters for all patrons remains the priority of the Library. If a resource is challenged as being inappropriate for inclusion in the Library collection, the following process shall be employed: the complainant fills out a Library Materials Re-evaluation Request form (Appendix 1) 7

8 a committee comprising the Senior Librarian, Dean of Studies and appointed Head of Departments shall be convened to discuss the complaint members of the committee review the item, complete a review form and discuss the item in relation to the selection criteria action as recommended by the committee to: retain the item retain the item with specific restrictions or remove the item 5. ELECTRONIC RESOURCES POLICY 5.1 The electronic information needs of users. The information needs of users are met by purchasing computer software and on-line database resource access using the following criteria as a priority order: curriculum and informational needs of students curriculum and informational needs of teachers Recreational needs of students. 5.2 Electronic materials Computer software purchased with Library funds will only be used on the Library computers. This software is not available for loan and will not be removed from the Library. Site license information will be kept by library staff. A range of books on disc and audio book ipads is available for student borrowing. Text selection and purchase of e-books will be made by the Head of Libraries in consultation with faculty staff. 5.3 Electronic lending rights policy Computer software is available for loan by teachers only. It is the responsibility of teachers to ensure that software is not copied while on loan. 5.4 Online information services 8

9 On-line information services displayed on the Library homepage are selected using the following criteria: Accuracy Currency Coverage Authority Objectivity Site presentation and access 6. INTERNET ACCESS POLICY 6.1 The Library provides free access to curriculum related information via Internet Explorer on all computers in the ELC and the main library. Boys are able to access the Internet during both class and recreational times. An Internet agreement must be signed by both the boy and a parent/guardian and returned to the school before access is provided. 6.2 Students are discouraged from using uneducational You Tube and gaming sites. Students on spare are also discouraged from using uneducational Internet sites. 6.3 Within reason, teaching staff have free access to the Internet. 7. USER PAYS POLICY 7.1 Photocopying printed text Users may be asked to pay an appropriate charge in line with school policy on photocopying costs. 7.2 Printing of digital information Users of electronic material are given access to printing facilities. No charge is made if the printing requirements are school related and hard copies are required. Where possible students are encouraged to use the school U Drive and USB storage devices. 9

10 8. SITE LICENSE POLICY All on-line resources purchased by the Library are governed by a site license agreement. According to the site license agreement, the number of users should not exceed the number for which an on-line resource is licensed. The Senior Librarian will be responsible for checking this situation as required. 9.
