1 DIGITAL MEDIA & ELECTRONIC RESOURCES TECHNICIAN PERMANENT FULL-TIME POSITION Newington College is a boys' school of the Uniting Church in Australia, founded in 1863 and a member of the AAGPS of NSW. There are approximately 1900 boys across three campuses, with around 1250 boys at the Secondary School, including 50 boarders. The remaining boys attend the Preparatory Schools at either Wyvern House (Stanmore) or Lindfield. Stanmore is in the inner western suburbs of Sydney, about 3km from the University of Sydney and 6km from the central business district of Sydney. OUTLINE The Newington College Library at the Stanmore Secondary campus is an innovative high-tech learning centre supporting 21 st century education by promoting innovation, creativity, literature, transliteracy, ICT and digital citizenship skills. The new Library, opened in 2013, is an integral hub within the school, focused on being a central contributor to the academic fabric of the College and to College life. The primary role of the Library at Newington College Stanmore Secondary Campus is to support the learning and teaching of students via the provision of engaging and relevant library services. The Digital Media and Electronic Resources role supports the Newington College Library in achieving the College s strategic goals. The core purpose of this role is to be responsible for the provision of library services that ensure the day-to-day running of the library. The Digital Media & Electronic Resources Technician is a key technical and administrative role in the Library Support Team. Library support staff will have a strong interest in student day-to-day learning and mindfully support this with the library s physical and online resources. They will also provide readers advisory (reading recommendation) services, and will support groups of students and or staff using the library with demonstrations, training sessions, reading promotion and other activities, as well as providing supervision for students in the library. Library and support staff will be flexible with work arrangements and the division of duties, and the expectation is that support staff will be conversant across a spectrum of library services and be able to provide assistance with these services, as the need arises. However each staff member will be responsible for several technical areas of the library. Opportunities to swap these areas will arise with suitable training opportunities, in order to support the growth and development of team members.

2 This role suits a highly motivated library technician or librarian with a high work ethic and a demonstrated understanding of modern libraries and library and information principles in particular with regards to a school context. The role also requires an understanding of the need to balance technology-rich and innovative services which may fall outside the scope of traditional library services, while still supporting these traditional services. This role reports to the Library Operations Manager and the Head of Library Services. The Library team consists of: 1. Head of Library Services 2. Learning and Teaching Librarian: Research priority 3. Learning and Teaching Librarian: Literature priority 4. Library Operations Manager 5. Digital Media and Electronic Resources Technician 6. Collections and Systems Technician 7. Library Assistant (Part-Time) 8. ICT Facilitator 9. ICT Facilitator B. ROLE DESCRIPTION 1. Digital media services Provide audio visual and digital media services (for example via ClickView) including but not limited to media capture, transfer, editing, cataloguing, troubleshooting, training and promotion. 2. Copyright Support copyright compliance in the provision of audio visual and digital media services, and assist with promoting copyright compliance across the College. 3. Electronic resources Electronic database and e-resource administration including but not limited to user registration, setting up database parameters, reporting and assisting with evaluation and subscription renewals. 4. Library operations Undertake day-to-day processing of various library system tasks which may include but not limited to acquisitions, cataloguing, processing, AV, copyright compliance, electronic resource management, library equipment management, borrower services and reporting Undertake library administration tasks including but not limited to library accounts administrative paperwork, budget updates, library bookings, creating signage, collecting mail and ordering stationery Assist with ensuring the day-to-day operation of the library, resources and equipment are efficiently maintained and provided, in line with current best practice Support access to information resources through efficient systems for organising, retrieving, circulating, and maintaining relevant and up-to-date resources Assist with collection development and maintenance including but not limited to acquisitions, shelving, stocktake, evaluation and weeding Exercise judgement, initiative and problem solving when dealing with a range of general and specialist tasks and problems Contribute to the co-ordination of library projects, strategic planning and the development of day-to-day library procedures and policies, in conjunction with the Library Operations Manager and Head of Library Services. 5. Library and information services Provide a positive, friendly, knowledgeable and welcoming environment Contribute to the provision of library web services including but not limited to creating websites, maintaining, updating and creating content for library online presence Develop and deliver training sessions and instruction in the use of information resources, library technology, information resources, collaborative tools, referencing tools and emerging technologies. This will include but not limited to electronic databases, search engines, referencing applications, content curation tools, AV systems, e-book platforms

3 Develop and implement fun and interesting activities that promote the library and encourage students and staff to engage with the library in different ways Assist with selection of appropriate print and electronic resources which support the curriculum and recreational reading Engage in evaluation, evidence-based practice and continuous improvement of library services Undertake day-to-day supervision duties to ensure appropriate student behaviour in the Library Undertake supervision of students without senior members of staff or teachers present, as required Assist with WHS compliance, and ICT and maintenance help desk request submission and completion Liaise with external stakeholders including but not limited to vendors, publishers and sales representatives. 6. Technology Use a variety of traditional and emerging technologies and platforms to deliver a range of innovative library services and programs Work with students and staff to train, support and develop their use of traditional and emerging technologies Support instructional design and creation of electronic learning resources Content curation of information resources to support learning and teaching. 7. Information and Research Participate in library information and help desk rosters including but not limited to provision of research and reference assistance, readers advisory, borrower maintenance, borrower services and circulation tasks. 8. Reading and Literature Assist with fostering an environment that encourages and empowers students to read, view, listen and respond, for understanding and enjoyment across a variety of modes Develop, implement and contribute collaboratively to strategies, programs, events and activities to support reading and literacy across the curriculum, and to develop in students and staff a love of literature and habits of lifelong reading Read, promote and market library collections and resources. 9. Learning and Teaching Support Library and ICT Facilitator staff in the delivery of lessons, programs, events and activities. 10. Curriculum Demonstrate familiarity with relevant curriculum areas to support the provision of library services. 11. Professional development Maintain awareness of current best practice in the library sector and in secondary education Undertake ongoing professional learning and development and share knowledge to assist with professional development of the Library team Support continuous improvement, evaluation and evidence-based innovation in school library programs Assist with provision of library-related professional development for College staff. 12. College Community Develop positive interpersonal relationships with students, staff and the wider College community Participate in the culture and life of the College. 13. Other Other duties as required by the Head of Library Services or Operations Librarian. C. SELECTION CRITERIA Knowledge, Skills & Experience Demonstrated experience with audio visual and digital media equipment, formats, software and programs Demonstrated experience with technical functions (modules) of library management systems

4 Demonstrated experience working with print and electronic library resources An understanding of library and information management principles and practices Demonstrated technology skills including library management systems, office software, social media (web 2.0) and new technologies Ability to develop, deliver and promote client-focused library and information services Experience delivering library and information help desk services - research and reference assistance, readers advisory and circulation tasks. Qualifications A qualification as a library technician, or a librarian, providing eligibility for Library Technician or Associate (professional) membership to ALIA, plus relevant work experience in a library. Desired Experience with audio visual/digital media content management systems such as Clickview or Digital Video Commander (DVC) Experience with the technical management of electronic databases Experience in a school library environment Experience with: video production, graphic design, marketing, web design/development, app development or an interest in developing some of these skills An interest in secondary curriculum-based disciplines A sense of fun and enjoyment in the provision of library services Commitment to keeping up-to-date with the interests and hobbies of young people Experience with cataloguing. Requirements The team shares the opening hours of a) Term time Monday to Thursday 7.30am 7.30pm (37 weeks) b) Term time Friday 7.30am 5.00pm (37 weeks) c) School vacation time 9.00am 4.00pm (15 weeks) d) Four Sunday afternoons a year 1.00pm 4.00pm The position is 37.5 hours per week for 46 weeks with 6 weeks leave. The extra leave of 2 weeks is in lieu of the roster system. Leave is taken in school vacation time When on duty without a senior member of library staff or teacher librarian, is responsible for the provision of Library Services, supervision of students and security of the Library Remuneration is $72,564 pa inclusive of superannuation Commencement date mid January D.
