1 Creating a Banner in Photoshop CS 5.5 These instructions explain how to create a banner in Photoshop CS 5.5 using Mac OS X. Part 1 tells you how to create a new document in Photoshop CS 5.5. Part 2 explains how to create a two- tone background using the Gradient Tool. Part 3 explains how to add a text heading and subheading to the banner. These instructions assume a basic level of computer proficiency. Mac OS X specific instructions are detailed enough that users without prior experience in Mac OS X can complete these instructions. Part 1: Creating a new document in Photoshop CS 5.5. Part 2: Creating a two- tone background using the Gradient Tool. Part 3: Adding a text heading and subheading to the banner. Part 1: Creating a new document in Photoshop CS Move the mouse pointer to the top right corner of the screen. 2 Click the magnifying glass icon in the upper right corner of the screen. 3 Type Photoshop into the search box. Note: A search box should appear. 4 Select Adobe Photoshop to open the application. Press Return on the keyboard and wait for Photoshop to load. Note: A window will appear depicting the status of the loading process. Wait for this task to complete. This process can take up to several minutes. Creating a Banner in Photoshop CS 5.5 1

2 5 Select File at the top left hand corner of the screen. 6 Select New from the drop down menu. 7 Type my First Banner into the Name text box. 8 Check to make sure the Preset drop down menu should read Custom. 9 Change the drop down menu from inches to pixels for Width. 10 Type 600 into the Width text box. 11 Type 200 into the Height text box. 12 Check to make sure that the Resolution reads 72 pixels/inch. 13 Check to make sure the first Color Mode drop down menu reads RGB Color. Note: RGB stands for red, green, and blue colors that will be available in the colors window. Differing quantities of red, green, and blue can be used to create additional colors. 14 Check to make sure that the second Color Mode dropdown menu reads 8- bit. 3 15 Check to make sure that the Background Contents drop down menu reads White. 16 Move the mouse pointer to the OK button. 17 Click the OK button. Part 2: Creating a two- tone background using the Gradient Tool. 1 Move the mouse to the bottom left of the screen. 2 Click on the Foreground. Note: The color picker screen should appear. 4 3 Enter the following values into the Color Picker window: R=4 G=146 B=245 4 Move the mouse pointer to the OK button. Note: The color will appear blue. 5 Click OK. 6 Move the mouse to the middle left side of the screen. 7 Click on the Paint Bucket tool. 8 Move the mouse over the canvas. 5 9 Click anywhere on the canvas. Note: The picture illustrates how the canvas should look after it is clicked. 10 Move mouse to the bottom left side of the screen. 11 Click on the Background. Note: The color picker screen will appear. 12 Enter the following values into the Color Picker window: R=126 G=125 B= Move the mouse pointer to the OK button. 6 16 Click and hold the Paint Bucket Tool. 17 Select the Gradient Tool. 18 Move the mouse to the top of the canvas. Note: Do not click on the window itself. Click on the canvas. 19 Click and drag the mouse to the bottom of the canvas. Note: The banner should now have a gradient. Part 3: Adding a text heading and subheading to the banner. 1 Move the mouse to the middle left side of screen. 2 Click on the Text tool. Creating a Banner in Photoshop CS 5.5 6

7 3 Move the mouse to the top of the command bar. Font Style Size Anti- aliasing Note: Command bar is known as the section in which font size, font style, and the rest of options are located as displayed in picture above. 4 Choose Times New Roman for the Font. 5 Choose Crisp as Anti- aliasing Method. 6 Choose Regular for Style. 7 Choose 60 for Font Size. 8 Move the mouse to the bottom left side of screen. 9 Click Foreground on the tool bar. 8 10 Enter the following values into the Color Picker window: R=14 G=132 B= Move the mouse pointer to the OK button. Note: The color will appear blue. 12 Click the OK button. 13 Click anywhere on the canvas. 14 Type Title. 15 Press Return on the keyboard. 16 Move the mouse to the top of the command bar. 17 Choose 30 for the Font Size. 18 Repeat steps 8 and 9 of Part Enter the values: R=227 G=235 B=240 Note: The color will appear white. 9 20 Move the mouse pointer to the OK button. 21 Click the OK button. 22 Type Subtitle. 23 Click on the Move Tool. 24 Click and hold on the text Title and Subtitle. 25 Drag the text to the center of the canvas. Note: You have successfully created a banner with a gradient. It should look similar to the picture above. The finished banner can be used on a web page or in a document.
