1 APPENDIX 11 Housekeeping procedure for the daily clean of a room/bedspace occupied by a patient with an infection/infectious disease (suspected or known) or being barrier nursed. Wash and dry hands thoroughly. Wear your PPE (personal protective equipment) - Apron and gloves, and face mask if needed. Always check with nurse in charge whether you can enter the room. Check that yellow colour coded mop bucket and mop handle is in the room. Assemble yellow coloured equipment outside room. (1 yellow mop head,, supply of disposable white cloths. Round yellow bucket to be left outside of room (for the disposal of the used water), actichlor plus tablets, orange rubbish bags, clear mop bag, hand towels and toilet tissues. (Leave outside until room clean) Make up the correct solution in your buckets. Yellow pale bucket - 4 Actichlor Plus tablets to 4 litres of tepid water and then place at least half a packet of white cloths in the solution. Yellow mop bucket - 3 Actichlor Plus tablets to 3 litres of warm water. Damp dust all ledges, window sills, doorframes, switches, flat surfaces, door handles and cot sides. Spot clean walls. Do not re-dip cloths. Clean sink and toilet Wet mop the floor using the water in the mop bucket and ending up at the door. Pick up loose debrie with damp cloth. Place mop head in clear bag and tie. Replace rubbish bags. Infected rooms only use orange bags. Dispose of water in yellow bucket outside room. Remove PPE and dispose of in orange bag. Wash and dry hands thoroughly. Come out of room. Dispose of water in sluice slop hopper, clean bucket and return to cleaning cupboard. Wash hands Label and take away rubbish to rubbish hold. Wash and dry hands thoroughly. *Check with Ward Leader before using Actichlor Plus if patient still in room.
2 Deep Clean: This is a yearly clean, to include all bays, side rooms and non patient areas. Patients will be moved from the ward area to enable deep cleaning. Time to clean (4-6 bedder 4-6 hours, side room 2-3 hours) Glosair treatment for all areas will then take 3 hours Wash and dry hands thoroughly Wear your PPE (Apron and gloves) and face mask and goggles if needed Make up the solution of Antichlor plus (4 tablets to 4 litres tepid water) and 1 packet of white cloths. Do not redip cloths The patients are decanted so the room only has furniture in Take all curtains down, place in disposiable linen bags and put outside room Discard first few paper towels/toilet tissues, all boxed gloves and aprons and any disposable medical equipment (check with nursing staff first) Where possible clean all lights and vents and ETS to take radiator covers off to clean. Clean all walls, windows and frames. Dry windows. Move furniture to one side of the room Clean all switches and data points Clean door frames and doors Clean floor-scrub and buff (if needed) (trained staff only) Clean the glass and mirrors, and dry with paper towel Clean all tables - top and bottom and upside down Clean all lockers - inside and out and upside down Clean all chairs all surfaces and upside down Steam clean beds (including mattresses) and radiators Wipe down beds and radiators Remove all tape Remove all tape residue with acetone and dry cloth (doors, tables, lockers and drip stands) Scrub and buff floors (trained staff only) Move furniture across and continue cleaning Empty water from buckets in sluice slop hopper and wash buckets out Place linen bags in linen cupboard Hang all curtains Dispose of all PPE in orange bag and place orange bags in rubbish cupboard Clean all cleaning equipment Wash hands and dry thoroughly Inform a Supervisor that the clean is complete A Supervisor is to place the Glosair machine in the room, following the Glosair checklist. Nurse in charge and Supervisor to inspect area and sign off paperwork Set the machine, leave the area, tape up doors and place no entry signs/bollards outside the door. A supervisor is to carry out an air check after Glosair is completed, complete Glosair checklist and Nurse in Charge and Supervisor to sign off paperwork.
3 GLOSAIR Fogging System Room Preparation Checklist Please check off each item as it is covered Before starting disinfection, the following operations must be performed: Remove dirty laundry and curtains. Remove any rubbish/waste and open bins. Remove all visible dirt. Clean walls, ceilings, and surfaces using a combined detergent & disinfection product (e.g. Actichlor plus). Rinse with clean water and allow to air dry. Close the windows and all exterior doors. Hang new curtains. Temporarily disconnect/cover the fire/smoke sensors in the room/area. Turn off the air conditioning system. If it is not possible to turn off the air conditioning and ventilation systems in the room, it is essential to cover all the air inlets and outlets. This step is important for allowing uniform spraying of the disinfectant in an adequate concentration within the room and to prevent the escape of hydrogen peroxide into the surrounding environment. Turn off ventilation and air intake systems. Note: It is not necessary to make the room draught proof. Check all paper products are removed or tucked in holder. Open all doors on bedside lockers/wardrobes and tables. Tilt mattress onto its side on the bed. Tilt chair cushion on side (if possible). Lift cot sides. Check vents, gaps and adjourning doors are sealed with masking tape. Take nurse call buzzer and Patient Line controls/handsets out of holder and place on bed/chair. Ensure nothing else plugged into the same socket as the GLOSAIR machine. Position GLOSAIR machine away from the window, and set the appropriate programme in place. Leave area/room and seal door with masking tape and put signage in place. Machine Number Date Time Clinical area/ward & room number. Check list sign off for permission to use GLOSAIR Fogging System Clinical Leader/Nurse in Charge Check list sign off Housekeeping Supervisor
4 Area/Room Re-entry Checklist Open all access doors and windows. Remove any additional seals (tape). Confirm cycle completed on GLOSAIR machine by pressing OK. Remove cover for fire/smoke detector in the room/area. Remove ventilation covers if applied. Close internal doors and cupboards of room furniture. Place mattress and pillows back in place. Put nurse call buzzer/patient Line controls/handsets back in holder. Remove GLOSAIR machine. Release room back to area/ward for patient use. Date Time Clinical area/ward & room number. Area/room release to ward following completion of GLOSAIR Fogging System Clinical Leader/Nurse in Charge Area/Room release to ward following completion of Fogging System Housekeeping Supervisor These forms are held by the Housekeeping Department as part of the Trust environmental decontamination record keeping process
5 Enhanced clean Enhanced cleaning takes place when there has been one or more cases of infections in a bay or ward (Suspected or confirmed). Patients are still in the area. Wash and dry hands thoroughly Wear your PPE (apron and gloves) and face mask if needed Make up solution of Actichlor plus (4 tablets - 4 litres of tepid water) in a round yellow bucket and add white disposable cloths Do not redip your cloths Wash all contact points (Door handles, bed rails, switches, chair arms, taps, sinks and toilets) Wash all tables and tops of lockers Wash over all window ledges Do not change curtains Empty your bucket in sluice slop hopper and wash out Dispose of your PPE in orange bag Wash hands and dry thoroughly. REPEAT FOR EACH AREA/BAY/BATHROOM
6 TERMINAL CLEAN (Post infection clean) Housekeeping procedure for rooms/bedspaces occupied by a patient who had an infection/infectious disease (Suspected or confirmed) Wash and dry hands thoroughly. Assemble all colour coded equipment which consists of 1 yellow bucket, 1 yellow mop bucket, 1 yellow mop head, Actichlor Plus tablets, PPE, white disposable cloths, clear mop bag, orange bag and disposable linen bag and footstool. Put on your PPE (personal protective equipment) - Apron and gloves, and face mask if needed. Make up the correct solution in your buckets. Yellow pale bucket - 4 Actichlor Plus tablets to 4 litres of warm water and then place at least half a packet of white cloths in the solution. Yellow mop bucket - 3 Actichlor Plus tablets to 3 litres of warm water. Open the windows, take all curtains down and place hooks in your bucket. Place curtains in disposable linen bag (not allowing linen bag on floor), then place outside room. Empty waste bin and place in orange bag. Could be more than one bin. Discard first few paper towels/toilet tissues, all boxed gloves and aprons and any disposable medical equipment (check with nursing staff) Move all furniture to one side of room Using your bucket and cloths wash all ledges, window sills, bed bumpers, lamps, TV and spot clean walls on the other side of room. Do Wet mop that side of room. Wash bed, mattress and pillow, paying attention to the flat surfaces under bed and mattress. Move to clean side of room. Wash locker inside and out and upside down. Wheel to clean side of room. Wash chair, paying attention to armrests both sides and head rest. Make sure you thoroughly clean the undersides. Move to clean side of room. Wash footstool and bed table, underside and top. Move to clean side of room. Wash bin, inside and out. Wheel to clean side of room. When all furniture is clean wash the ledges and windows door handles and glass and mirrors (dry after) Wet mop other side of room. Wash sink and toilet thoroughly top and bottom. Dispose of PPE into your orange bag. Dispose of dirty water from both buckets in sluice slop hopper and clean equipment. Wash hands and dry thoroughly Hang clean curtains Remove waste bag and linen bag to collection point. Label orange bag with ward code. Take paper work to nurse in charge to check and sign off room.
