YOUTH WORK IRELAND Presents the The Irish Youth Music Awards Your festival - Be Part of It Information Leaflet Saturday 18 th April 2015 The Aviva Stadium, Dublin
The IYMAs YOUR AWARDS We are now entering our eight year of the IYMAs and to date over 85,000 young people have taken part in the project. The IYMAs have acted as the stepping stone to support and develop young musicians, turning them into cultural entrepreneurs. We are very excited to have you take part in this year s event and want to build The IYMAs into the biggest festival of young musicians in Ireland as well as acting as a support network for advice and information. If you have any comments or suggestions please let us know. This is your celebration of young people s creativity, team work and musicianship. So we think this is great let s hear what the receiptants of the awards have to say about the project: Lucas from The Left Backs 2014 IYMAs Awards Recipient: I thought the IYMAs was a really good idea to get young people interested in music. I think the creative element was the best part as you had to write your own music as it s easier to do a cover than write your own song. The collective around the band on the project was great with the facebook team and the stylist. It was unbelievable to win The IYMAs, we have been in lots of battle of the bands competitions before and this and this is the first music event we won Niamh Crowther 2013 IYMAs Awards Recipient: I ve been taking part in The IYMAs since 2011 and have been lucky enough to record on both of the winning Meath team s albums. The IYMAs are a standalone initiative, it s all about teamwork rather than winners and losers which is what appealed to me in the first place. The opportunities and experiences I ve had as a result of The IYMAs were ones that I ll always remember and be extremely grateful for as they ve encouraged and aided me in developing as an artist Niamh Crowther IYMAs Recipient The Left Backs IYMAs Recipient 2
YOUTH WORK IRELAND Steps to The Irish Youth Music Awards National Day We have included a list of the steps to get ready for The Irish Youth Music Awards National Day which will take place in the Aviva Stadium on April 18 th 2015 below. If you have any queries, questions or comments please contact us on iymas@youthworkireland.ie, don t forget to like us on facebook under Irish Youth Music Awards or on Keep us up to date with your regions progress by using the #iymas. Step 1 Getting ready for your local live selection night Poster and information about upcoming project seeking applicants. It is from this campaign that we will establish final structure of event framework (amount of applicants from each region etc). Step 2 Workshop Support (If required) Outline guidelines to the competition section of project. A Youth Work Ireland Representative goes to each location for a workshop of current amenities relating to musical equipment and rehearsal spaces. Q&A session. (Notes): Already at this stage of the project, we feel that knowledge and experience being brought directly into the lives of the young people involved, will be of great encouragement, and will demonstrate directly to them, that their qualities can be acknowledged and appreciated at a very high level in areas which they may have found very difficult to attain, possibly even insurmountable. Step 3 Local Live selection night The goal of the local live selection night is to select 1 act and 3 songs (if the selected act has wrote the selected song the second song will be given to the selected act to perform at the Irish Youth Music Awards National Day) it is the method we have chosen to employ here, which we feel will create a sense of belonging to a team, and indeed a community, in a very positive sense. A local live selection night will be held in each location, to select one act, which will then represent that location in the Dublin Final. Because some regions will have more applicants than others, we have devised a cell structure. See cell structure below. The local live selection will be judged by the bands and artists themselves. The winning act will then be referred to as the Representing Act. This act will then be prepared and sent to Dublin, by a team built from non-representing acts, to perform 2 songs, one of their own, and the selected from the local live selection night (song has be selected by vote). 3
(Notes): We have used similar methods in workshops to encourage team building. As everybody cannot go and represent their area on the Irish Youth Music Awards National Day, this method of cross responsibility brings a great sense of individuality within a team framework. The writers of the songs want the performing act to do well with them. This also opens up a wider support within the community, as it s not just a band going off to the Aviva Stadium it s the whole team, as they now directly represent their region. Step 4 Building your support team From the non-representing acts a team will be selected and built, to send the representing act off in style, at a Farewell Gig (ie a show before the Irish Youth Music Awards National Day, to allow everybody a chance to review their work). This team will need to include: a. Facebook Team b. Stage Team c. Audio and Photo Team d. Image Team e. Press Team f. Fundraising Team g. Others (SEE 23 JOBS LIST). All of these positions, or jobs, will be filled at random, by drawing straws. If an individual does not wish to take on his or her selected job, they will need to find a volunteer to job swap. If you are limited on numbers of people involved in the project you can double job. Descriptions of these jobs, along with hints are available in the rules booklet which is in this pack or can be downloaded from our website at (Notes): This is the centre piece of the project. It is within this section of the project that a real sense of value and belonging can be encouraged. We believe this part of the project will be a unique opportunity for individuals to find themselves being empowered to take ownership of their role/s and to work in a team environment for the collective aims of the group. The 23 Jobs will be a fun experience, while actually also an extremely valuable asset. They will bring young people into direct contact with creative challenges and outlets such as photography, song writing, management, computer skills, team work, achievement though discipline, debating skills, and other positive, confidence building experiences. They will witness and partake in a microcosm of the music business, interacting at times with real individuals from the top end of the Irish music world. They will see how the industry works, and how people need to work together to achieve common interests as well as learning new skills. 4
This is the area where we hope to instil a sense of pride of one s self, and one s community, while encouraging the individuals own desires for their future. Step 5 Farewell regional show The priority here is to foster individual strengths, irrespective of ability. This takes place after the local Farewell Gig, and marks will be awarded for good teamwork in press and radio coverage, Facebook usage, technical professionalism, enthusiasm & farewell gig financial success i.e. turnout. This could also act as an opportunity to fundraise for any costs incurred during your involvement in the IYMAs. Don t forget to keep us updated on your progress by ing us iymas@youthworkireland.ie Step 6 National Irish Youth Music Awards Day April 18 th at the Aviva Stadium This will be the day to showcase your regions work and musicianship. We have a lot planned for this day with more information to be announced early next year. We will have support and advice from Irelands top music professionals. Live performances from each participating region Lots more if you got an idea please us iymas@youthworkireland.ie as this is your awards!! The recipient of the 2015 award receives: The recipient region will spend at least four days in a top recording studio We would encourage that each individual from that region, or Cell, appears on the album in some way or another. As this is a collaborative project. The Album will be manufactured and distributed online through I-tunes and other digital aggregators. The Album will be sent out for review. We are working on other elements to this with more to follow. 5
About Us We work with local communities all over Ireland to deliver quality supports and services with and for young people. We provide safe spaces where young people are listened to, make a difference and have fun. Be part of it! Youth Work Ireland is a federation of 22 Local Member Youth Services who deliver programmes and services to young people across the island of Ireland. We work with over 100,000 young people, through 470 clubs and youth projects, supported by over 500 staff and 7,000 dedicated volunteers. Outcomes of our work: Through our network of clubs, projects, drop in centres, youth information centres, youth cafés, music, arts, citizenship programmes and other outlets, we promote an open, integrated and accessible approach to working with young people. As a Federation of local youth services run by local people, we are uniquely placed to reach young people in their local communities around Ireland. We work to develop the potential of these young people and to strengthen communities in Ireland through quality youth services. Young people are at the heart of our organisation and are supported with excellent standards in volunteering, leaders and programme services. Many young people do not have a safe place to go where they can have a sense of belonging, when they can have a positive relationship with adults and where people believe in them. We offer young people from all backgrounds a place to go, a listening ear and support if it's needed. The services are run by local people and the programmes are run based on the needs of the local community. Positive relationships between young people and adults ensure that young people thrive and are on the road to reaching their potential as well rounded adults. 6
