Approved goggles, protective gloves, and cleaning accessories are provided by the department. Safety eyewear must be worn at all times in the laboratory. Grading: 13 Tests points each 550 Points 1 Final Exam 200 points 200 Points 13 Homeworks 5 points each 65 Points 13 Labs 20 points each 250 Points 1065 Points Letter Grades: 900+ A (90%) 850+ B+ (85%) 800+ B (80%) 750+ C+ (75%) 700+ C (70%) 650+ D+ (65%) 600+ D (60%) Attendance: You cannot miss more than 25% of the lecture sections, regardless of the reason, to pass the class. If a student has more than four (4) unexcused absences in lecture or two unexcused absences in lab, a loss of one letter grad penalty will result Missed exams, labs, or quizzes that are not excused will result in a grade of 0. You must notify me in advance or as soon as reasonably possible after a missed exam, lab, or quiz for me to consider the absence excused.

2 This means you must generally either call, , or see me in person about the absence before it occurs. Documentation of the excuse may be required at my discretion. Examples of acceptable documentation include a signed and dated form from a doctor s office, funeral home/pastor, or court officer (the reason for the appearance is not needed). Tests: The 40 point tests will be given at the end of the class period, and will be 30 minutes in length. They will cover any material presented since the previous test. Every fourth test (50 points) will include material that appeared on the previous three tests. Final Exam: The final exam will be comprehensive, and will be given at the appointed time at the end of the semester (Tuesday 12/9 11:00 AM). It is worth 200 points, and three hours is provided for completion. Homework: Homework will be assigned through Mastering Chemistry online, and will be due Wednesdays at 10:00 PM. Typical assignments will consist of problems, so it is suggested to work on a few problems every day rather than waiting until the day it is due. In addition to the online homework, a list of suggested problem has been included at the end of the syllabus. Even though these problems will not be graded, they may be discussed during the recitation. The answers are provided in the book. The access code is available by either purchasing a new book at the bookstore, or by purchasing the code online at from Pearson Mastering Chemistry. To use the online homework, you must: 1. Acquire the access code for Mastering Chemistry by Pearson 2. Go to 3. Click on STUDENTS and follow the directions to enter your access code 4. When asked if you have a current Pearson education account, click NO 5. To set up a login name and password, use your USCA address and the school zip code Follow the directions under Join Your Mastering Chemistry Course and enter the class code: MJS101F14. Laboratory Work: The laboratory and recitation are set up for a time block. You must come to both times listed on your class schedule. Each lab will be preceded by a short 5 point quiz, given at the beginning of the Rec/Lab period. The quiz will cover the procedure of that day s lab, material presented in the previous lab, and lab safety.

3 Each lab will also be graded by the performance of the experiment and lab write-up, including all of the questions in the lab manual. Laboratory safety rules must be followed at all times, and failure to do so may result in dismissal from the lab and loss of points. The Powerpoints used in lecture will be available on BlackBoard under Course Documents. Supplemental homework problems from the book will be listed on BlackBoard under Assignments. These will not be graded, but will be available for additional practice. Portable Electronic Devices The use of any portable electronic devices, including cell phones, pagers, MP3 players, ipods, etc., during class is not allowed. If a student is seen touching, holding, or using any portable electronic device during a test period, the instructor will assume that the student is cheating.
